Richard Branson (chief of Virgin records) forced the reworking of this album's B-side, calling "Sally" "too boisterous". About 30,000-40,000 copies of the original pressing exist. Most pressings list "Sally" on the sleeve and disc but have "Into Wonderland" instead, as Virgin didn't bother to update the album packaging.

"Sally" and "Into Wonderland" share the same drum track, but "Sally" has the lyrics: "Sally, I'm just a gorilla / I'll say I love you evermore / Even an ape from Manila / Couldn't stop me knocking at your door". You can tell if your LP has the original "Sally" by checking the matrix number pressed into the runout groove on the B-side of the album; pressings with "Sally" have matrix numbers ending in "-B1" and "-B2".

"I just wanted to start experimenting with song writing. It used to annoy me that I couldn't write songs, and it was very helpful promotion for the album. I set about learning how to do it, I talked to people, I got a few reference books like a rhyming dictionary and a book of synonyms, and set about it very methodically."

Mike Oldfield about this album

With this album, Oldfield began to make an attempt to break down his extended structures into a more commercially acceptable format, with the sidelong title track being separated into four sections. Early versions of this album included Oldfield's paean to his sister, 'Sally' while later pressings include 'Into Wonderland'.

Steven McDonald - All Music Guide

It seems like just the other day that I was reviewing Oldfield's double LP, Exposed, but alas, here is yet another from the man who gave us "Tubular Bells." This one's entitled Platinum. Again employing the considerable talents of some old friends (Pierre Moerlen and Hansford Rowe of Gong, David Bedford, Alan Schwartzberg, Peter Gabriel, Maurice Pert, etal.), Oldfield has traveled a slightly different route here, "Platinum" (Side 1), like some of his previous works, is one continuous side broken up into four sections. The final section, "North Star," was borrowed from a piece of the same name by avant-garde classical composer, Philip Glass, Unlike his past work, "Platinum" reflects more urgent rock tendencies, but without sacrificing Oldfield's lyrical and mercurial guitar prowess. The songs on Side 2 emphasize the difference between this current LP and the ones preceding it, "Woodhenge" is a percussive and spacy song, beautiful but a bit haunting. "Sally" is quite the opposite: "Sally, I'm just a gorilla/Even an ape from Manilla couldn't stop me knocking on your door..." It's a humorously musical tune whose novelty doesn't seem to wear off, "Sally" slides nicely into "Punkadiddle," Oldfield's tip of his cosmo topper to the new wave, though still very much punctuated by his expert musicianship. The final cut is one which is familiar to most of us, but not in this form. "I Got Rhythm," the George Gershwin classic, is admirably rendered by Wendy Roberts on vocals, with Oldfield changing the tempo a touch and highlighting it with guitar and bells. This rendition would, no doubt, please Mr. Gershwin. Maybe "Rhapsody In Blue" will be next.

SALLY

Isn't it good to know
You only get one go?
Give me a key and let me see.
Try and act normally!

Seems it's an ancient art
To be the one who starts it rolling.
Wouldn't you like to know the way?
Hear what the wise man say.

[ Chorus ]

Sally, I'm just a gorilla.
I'll say I'll love you ever more.
Even an ape from Manila
Couldn't stop me knocking on your door!

One and a-one make two.
Only you must come through.
If there's a way, then let me say:
I'd rather stay with you.

Seems it's an ancient art
To be the one who starts it rolling.
Wouldn't you like to know the way?
Hear what the wise man say.

[ Repeat Chorus ]

I GOT RHYTHM

I got sunshine,
I got blue sky.
I got my guy,
Who could ask for anything more?

Old man trouble,
I don't mind him.
You won't find him
Hangin' 'round my door.

I got rhythm,
I got music.
I got my guy,
Who could ask for anything more?

I got rhythm,
I got music.
I got my guy,
Who could ask for anything more?

I got sunshine,
I got blue sky.
I got my guy,
Who could ask for anything more?

I got starlight,
I got sweet dreams.
I got my guy,
Who could ask for anything more?

Old man trouble,
I don't mind him.
You won't find him
Hangin' 'round my door.

I got rhythm,
I got music.
I got my guy,
Who could ask for anything more?
