The title tune became the anthem of Senegalese youth in 1990. This is the first album N'Dour hasn't re-recorded for the international market. It's very African and his best recorded work to date.

Released one year after his breakthrough recording The Lion, Set clinches Youssou N'Dour's international stardom. From start to finish N'Dour is in fine voice and his band, Super Etoile de Dakar, provides flawless backing. Not one to shy away from tough topics, N'Dour tackles a variety of issues, from the pain and joy of love, to the heartfelt protest of the dumping of toxic waste on undeveloped nations by richer, more developed countries. Set is produced by Michael Brook, who brings out the best in Youssou and the band with a clean and vibrant sound. Daniel Lanois produces one track and is equally successful. There is no formulaic approach to the music on this CD; the song "Xale" puts Youssou together with a classical music style string sextet--a joining that works surprisingly well. The title track has a crisp, pushy rhythm matched by Youssou's imploring voice which underscores the text of the song: the urgency of the need for international cooperation, and the responsibility that the superpowers bear in working for peace.

** Klang.: 08-09

Simply put, Youssou N'Dour is one of the greatest vocalists to ever walk the earth. Those who have seen his familiar jeans-sneakers-and-red-cap approach to the music-Youssou always appears onstage looking as if he just stepped off a plane from a gig on the other side of the world-know that he is more than that, that by being the first so-called world beat musician to reach a huge audience outside his native Senegal, he has become a symbol of much more. While the pop superstars of the West are busy making videos and cutting lucrative ads for soft drinks, N'Dour sings urgent songs that express real concern for the future of the planet and all its people, no matter what their race or place of birth. His music is world pop in the best sense of the world-he's willing to meet the West part of the way, but he always demands an awareness of his own culture and background, and the two meet effortlessly halfway in Youssou N'Dour's music. Socio-musicology aside, Youssou's prime concern is communication-whether it's the new politics of his generation of Africans or just the politics of plain old dancing. Youssou's stunning voice sings words that are cautionary, self-aware and solid, the sound of thinking globally and dancing locally, the groove of everybody pulling together for the sake of the whole planet. Best of Set: "Toxiques" (with Daniel Lanois and Coldcut both guesting on production), "Set," "Miyoko," "Xale" and "Fakastalu."
