'I am, as you know, always reluctant if I have to write for an instrument I can't stand' was Mozart's excuse to his father for not fulfilling a lucrative commission for an amateur flautist. Surely we can't take him seriously, given the G major Concerto he did complete, and the D major Concerto he transcribed for flute? Sharon Bezaly obviously adores this music, and her time as principal flautist in Camerata Academica Salzburg must have helped mould her into this graceful Mozartean, with limpid tone, an impish sense of humour, and sometimes staggering breath control.

The Ostrobothnians and conductor Kangas dance around Bezaly, and their sparkling exchanges with the soloist in the outer movements are fleet-footed, yet full of muscular energy.

Twee this is not, and the refreshment continues in the new cadenzas Bezaly has commissioned from Finnish composer Kalevi Aho, who filters Mozart's musical ideas through his 21st century ears. They'll be a deal-breaker for some, a delight for others, but make sure you hear them for yourself. And the recording is as rewarding as the performances, in stereo or 5.0 surround.
