Gary Moore's 1989 release, After the War features a return to the metal guitar riffing of his 80's records ("Speak for Yourself" and "Running From The Storm"), while continuing to explore more conventional pop dynamics with mixed results - it works great on "Ready to Love". Also, after dedicating his last album to fallen childhood friend and musical partner in crime, Philip Lynott, Moore finally honored him in song with the moving "Blood of Emeralds". As it turned out, this would be Gary Moore's last hard rock album before becoming a "born-again" bluesman.

Gary Moore has had a long and varied career (check the Thin Lizzy review below), but he's never really fit under any of the categories into which he's been slotted. The guy is a phenomenal guitarist by any standards, and while his solo albums have been hit-or-miss, this one is considerably heavier (and much better) than his last. A lot of After The War seems aimed at AOR, but metal shows will find plenty to their liking-Speak For Yourself" rocks up a storm, and the three instrumentals will make guitar mofos' jaws drop. Best of all, "Led Clones" is the song many of us have long been waiting for: featuring a lead vocal by Ozzy, the song is dominated by a brilliant Zep-parody riff, and the lyrics knock the stuffing out of Kingdom Clone and their pathetic ilk. If we charted songs in these pages, "Led Clones" would deserve to be #1 for months! A dynamic return to form.

Der Titelsong und "Running From The Storm" besitzen den Drive von "Out In The Fields". Irisches verrockt Gary Moore in "Blood Of Emerald".

UNLUCE (PART 1)

Instrumental.

AFTER THE WAR

So many came before you,
the prisoners of fate.
A history of bloodshed,
a legacy of hate.
But where will you be standing
when the battles have been won?
Inside your lonely fortress
the battles just begun.

After the war,
who will you be fighting for?
After the war is over.
After the fire
is burning to its dying embers.
After the war.

A letter from the draft board
put pain to all your dreams.
You're just another number
in military schemes.
They marched you in a uniform
you wore against your will.
With lies of hope and glory,
they taught you how to kill.

After the war,
who will you be fighting for?
After the war is over.
After the fire
is burning to its dying embers.

After the war,
you thought you'd be a hero,
after all that you survived.
If hell was meant for heroes,
then surely you’ve arrived.
Ah.

After the war,
after the war.

After the war,
who will you be fighting for?
After the war,
who will you be fighting for?
After the fire
is burning to its dying embers.
After the war.

SPEAK FOR YOURSELF

Look around across the nation.
Another league of morons marching,
banners in hand.
Looking for another scapegoat,
try to take away the things they don't understand.

Somewhere in the darkness,
there's a voice that's crying to be heard.
You feel it deep inside you,
a voice that just won't be denied.

Speak for yourself.
Someone will hear you,
someone will listen.
Speak for yourself.
Who knows, you might change your world.

They try to take away your freedom.
They try to tell you what you can
or what you can't hear.
Don't let this moral suffocation
make you turn out just like them,
is that what they fear?

Somewhere in the darkest night,
a voice that's crying to be heard.
You hear it deep inside you now,
a voice that just won't be denied.

Speak for yourself.
Someone will hear you,
hear what you're saying.
Speak for yourself.
Who knows, you might change your world.

They never listen to a word you say.
They always turn their backs and walk away.
Well, take a look at yourself now, baby.
Take a look at yourself.
Take a look at the things you should have done.
It's up to you.

Speak for yourself.
Someone will hear you,
someone will listen.
Speak for yourself,
someone will hear you,
out in the darkness.

Speak for yourself.
Someone will hear you,
someone will listen.
Speak for yourself.
Who knows, you might change your world.
You might change your world.
Speak for yourself.

LIVIN' ON DREAMS

We used to stand on the corner of the street,
watching the world go by.
Movin' on when the cops came along,
looking 'em in the eye.

Young guys with stars in their eyes,
trying to make ends meet.
Young guys with stars in their eyes,
dancin' to the beat.

Running wild,
we were livin' on dreams.
Running wild,
nothing's what it seems.
Running wild.

(Holy show - show - show)

The Alley Cats on a Saturday night,
a rumble without a warning.
Woodbines and a bottle of wine,
and no school in the morning.

Hot stuff, we acted so tough,
we knew how to take a heed.
Paying the dues by singing the blues,
and dancin' to the beat.

Running wild,
we were livin' on dreams.
Running wild,
nothing's what it seems.
Running wild,
we were livin' on dreams.
Running wild,
nothing's what it seems.

Just like an ocean in motion,
sometimes you go too far.
Then just to drop in the ocean,
crash and burn like a shooting star.

Young guys with stars in their eyes,
just trying to make ends meet.
Young guys with stars in their eyes,
dancin' to, dancin' to the beat.

Running wild,
we were livin' on dreams.
Running wild,
nothing's what it seems.

Running wild,
we were livin' on dreams.
Running wild,
nothing's what it seems.

Running wild,
we were livin' on dreams.
Running wild,
nothing's what it seems.

Running wild,
we were livin' on dreams.
Running wild,
nothin', nothin', nothing's what it seems.

LED CLONES

The time has come to talk about tomorrow.
You should be a careful one tomorrow.
I heard them on the radio.
I saw them on the video.
I don't think I can take much more.

Led clones, Led clones.

You've stolen from the houses of the holy.
You've rolled into the kingdom of the sain.
I heard you on the radio.
I saw those crummy videos.
I don't think I can take no more.

Led clones, Led clones.

Got to get it on,
from the still of the night.
But you're gettin' it wrong,
you know it ain't right.

Ooh, yeah.
Ooh, yeah.

I saw them on the radio.
I heard them on the videos.
I don't think I can take much more.

Led clones.
Led clones.
Led clones, woh.
Led clones.

Led clones.
(Repeat to end).

THE MESSIAH WILL COME AGAIN

Instrumental.

RUNNING FROM THE STORM

The wind is up,
and the sky is falling.
The thunder cracks,
and the sea is rolling.

Wonder if we'll ever see tomorrow.
Ride with our backs to the wind,
don't know if I'll make home again.

Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.

The sky is black,
and the wind is howling.
The lightning strikes,
and the sea is raging.

Wonder if we'll ever see tomorrow.
Turning our ships to the sun,
this time there is no place to run.

Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.

Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.

Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.
Running from the storm.

THIS THING CALLED LOVE

I saw you standing at the corner of the street,
you look so fine.
I don't care what it is your sellin',
I wanna be the next in line, aough.
You're dressed to kill,
you look good enough to eat.
I'm telling you,
there's just one thing you can't beat.

This thing called love.
This thing called love.
Aough.

That long, blond hair, those eyes of blue,
those ruby lips and legs so long, baby.
You've got the goods,
you're holdin' big time.
There's no way you can go wrong.
You knock 'em dead,
when you're walking down the street.
I'm telling you,
there's just one thing you can't beat.

This thing called love, woh.
This thing called love.
This thing called love.
This thing called love.

Lookin' for a love on a summer's night.
I've got you lined up in my sights.
I've been looking for a love since the break of dawn.
Hey baby, come on!
Yeah!

This thing called love.
This thing called love.

I've been looking for a love on a summer's night.
I'm loaded up, you're in my sights.
Lookin' for a love since the break of day.
Hey baby, what you say?
Ooh, yeah!

This thing called love.
This thing called love.

This thing called love.
This thing called love.

This thing called love.

READY FOR LOVE

Hey baby, looking good to me.
Hey baby, I like what I see.
I'm ready, I'm ready for love.
What you say, we just forget the drill.
Full metal jacket, I'm shooting to kill.
I'm ready, I'm ready for love.

Don't you know that it's cold outside.
Come on in, I'll keep you satisfied.
Just like that moon up above,
I'm out tonight and I'm ready for love.

I'm getting ready, I'm ready for love, hooh.
I'm ready, I'm ready for love.
Aough!
Move over baby.

Hey baby, won't you tell me your sign.
What do you know, it's the same one as mine.
I'm ready, I'm ready for love.
You hear me knockin', but you won't let me in.
Open the door honey, let the fun begin.
I'm ready, I'm ready for love.

You say you will, then you say you won't.
Now you see it, now you don't.
Just like that moon up above,
It's out tonight and I'm ready for love.

I'm getting ready, I'm ready for love.
I'm getting ready, I'm ready for love.

Every day in the week,
I'm in a different city.
Every day in the week,
somebody tries to hold me down.

Your place or mine, honey?

Don't you know that it's cold outside.
Come on in, I'll keep you satisfied.
Just like that old moon up above,
I'm out tonight and I'm ready, ready, ready, ready.

(I'm out tonight and I'm ready for love.)
(I'm ready for love.)
(I'm out tonight and I'm ready for love.)
I'm ready for love.

Ready, I'm ready for love.
I'm getting ready, I'm ready for love.
I'm getting ready, I'm ready for love, wooh!
I'm getting ready, I'm ready for love.
Just like that moon up above.

(Ready)
I'm ready for love.
(I'm getting ready.)
I'm ready for love.
(Ready)
I'm getting ready for love.
(I'm getting ready.)
Ooh, just like that moon up above.

(Ready, I'm getting ready.)
I'm getting ready for love.
(Ready, I'm getting ready.)
Aough!
Hooh.

(Ready, I'm getting ready.)
(Ready, I'm getting ready.)
(Ready, I'm getting ready.)
(Ready.)

BLOOD OF EMERALDS

I was born up on the North side,
where the Lagan River flows.
When I came across the border,
I was following my nose.
Dublin city '69,
there could have been no better place,
there was no better time.
Through the thunder and the rain,
the deepest blood of emeralds
was running through my veins.

Blood of emeralds.

I was down and out on Skid Row,
but I held on to my pride.
The darkest son of Ireland,
he was standin' by my side.
We would sail the stormy seas.
Never looking back,
we were afraid of what we'd see.
Through the thunder and the rain,
the deepest blood of emeralds
was running through our veins.

Some of us will win and some of us will lose,
the strong will survive.
Some of us will fall,
some of us won't get out of here alive.

Blood of emeralds.
Blood of emeralds.

I was angry, I was sad,
just thinking about the times we had.
I felt so lost and lonely too,
what could I say, what could I do?
And after all, the time goes by.
No one knows the reasons why.
You lived each day like there was no tomorrow.
You spent those years living on time you borrowed.
And in your eyes, all I could see was sorrow.

Some of us will win, some of us will lose,
the strong will survive.
Some of us will fall,
some of us won't get out of here alive.

Blood of emeralds.
Blood of emeralds.
Blood of emeralds.

(Blood of emeralds.)
The deepest blood of emeralds.
Blood of emeralds.

The deepest blood of emeralds.
The deepest, deepest blood of emeralds.
