Not wanting to leave a good thing behind, Moore reprises Still Got the Blues on its follow-up, After Hours. While his playing is just as impressive, the album feels a little calculated. Nevertheless, Moore's gutsy, impassioned playing makes the similarity easy to ignore.

Gary Moore had time for a couple cups of tea with Irish rockers Thin Lizzy in the mid 1970s before carving out a successful solo career in Europe as a rock guitar hero. This decade he's emphasizing his long-festering love for blues, first with Charisma's best-selling Still Got the Blues and then this equally pleasing album. While his singing has little depth or personality, his guitar plumbs slow blues like Duster Bennett's "Jumpin' at Shadows" with concern and caprioles effectively next to Albert Collins's in a busy arrangement of Little Milton's "The Blues Is Alright

Jedenfalls ist aus dem Ausflug des Hardrock-Gitarristen Gary Moore in den Blues inzwischen ein längerer Aufenthalt geworden - und auch sein zweites Album mit Blues, bluesigem Rock und Rhythm & Blues kann sich hören lassen: eine Spur erdiger als der Vorgänger und schöne Musik allemal. Zu glatt, zu brav, zu wenig gespickt mit Hoffnungslosigkeit und Verzweiflung? Also bitte! Es kann nicht nur Puristen geben.
