Although Meat Loaf has made several albums since Bat out of Hell (most of them never released in the U.S.), Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell is an explicit sequel to that milestone of '70s pop culture. Reprising the formula of the original nearly to the letter, Back into Hell is bombastic and has too much detail, thanks to the pseudo-operatic splendor of Jim Steinman's grandly cinematic songs. From the arrangements to the length of the tracks, everything on the album is overstated; even the album version of the hit single, "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)," is twelve minutes long. Yet that's precisely the point of this album, and is also why it works so well. No other rock & roller besides Meat Loaf could pull off the humor and theatricality of Back into Hell and make it seem real. In that sense, it's a worthy successor to the original.

At a certain point, bad taste and bombast becomes so excessive and so grandiose that they're no longer an easily dismissed irritation but an astonishing monument to the warped imagination. Such a monument is Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, the long-delayed sequel to 1977's Bat Out of Hell. Once again songwriter/producer Jim Steinman has isolated high-school parking-lot aphorisms and inflated them to Wagner-on-Broadway proportions, casting Mr. Loaf as a heavy-metal Ezio Pinza. Typical of the album's strategy is its big hit single, "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." Steinman piles on the guitars, drums, synthesizers, and choral voices as if he were Phil Spector producing Kiss playing the Who songbook. The rest of the album tackles the themes of teenage lust, frustration, and rock & roll fantasies in similar fashion. It's somehow beside the point to complain about the puerile lyrics, the leaden rhythms, the derivative melodies, the histrionic vocals, or the overblown arrangements. Steinman knows how to push his audience's buttons, and with Meat Loaf's help, he hits those buttons with a sledgehammer.

...[Meat Loaf's] back with an album whose only concession to contempory requirements is backing vocals by Nelson...Loaf pumps enough fervor into [Jim Steinman's] mania to kick Andrew Lloyd Weber's flabby white butt back to the family mansion...

Spin (10/93, p.105)

"...when singer and song merge--as is often the case--the results are life-enhancing...."

Q Magazine (1/94, p.83)
Included in Q's list of 'The 50 Best Albums Of 1993'

...truly, [BAT OUT OF HELL II] is the genuine follow-up to the most over-the-top rock album of all time...as a mad, crunching stadium rock album, it's probably the best thing of its kind you'll hear this year...

Q Magazine (10/93, p.112) - 4 Stars - Excellent

So etwas ist Meat Loaf mit Bat Out Of Hell II: Back To Hell gelungen, dieser verspäteten Fortsetzung des Klassikers von 1977, Bat Out Of Hell.

I'D DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE (BUT I WON'T DO THAT)

And I would do anything for love
I'd run right into hell and back
I would do anything fo love
I'll never lie to you and taht's a fact

but I'll never forget the way you feel right now -
Oh no - no way -
I would do anything for love
But I won't do that
I won't do that
Anything for love
I would do anything for love
I would do anything for love
but I won't do that
T won't do that

Some days it don't come easy
Some days it don't come hard
Some days it don't come at all
And these are the days that never end

Some nights you're breathing fire
Some nights you're carved in ice
Some nights you're like nothing I've ever seen before
Or will again

Maybe I'm crazy
but it's crazy and it's true
I know you can save me
No one else dan save me now but you

As long as the planets are turning
As long as the stars are burning
As long as your dreams are coming true -
You better believe it! -

That I would do anything for love
And I'll be there until the final act -
I would do anything for love!
And I'll take a vow and seal a pact -

But I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way - Tonight -
I would do anything for love!
I would do anything for love
I would do anything for love
But I won't do that
I wont't do that...

I would do anything for love
Anything youve been dreaming of
But I just won't do that...

Somedays I pray for silence
Somedays I pray for soul
Somedays I just pray to the God of Sex and Drums and Rock'N Roll

Some nights I lose the feeling
Some nights I lose control
Some nights I just lose it all when I watch you dance and the thunder rolls

Maybe I'm lonely
and that's all I'm qualified to be
There's just one and only
The one and only promise I can keep

As long as the wheels are turning
As long as the fires are burning
As long as your prayes are coming true -
You better believe it -!

That I would do anything for love!
And you know it's true and that's fact
I would do anything for love!
And there'll never be no turning back -

But I'll never do it better than I do it witch you
So long -
So long -
I would do anything for love
I would do anything for love
I would do anything for love
But I won't do that
I won't do that!

I would do anything for love
Anything you've been dreaming of
but I just won't do that...

But I'll never stop dreaming of you
Every night of my life -
No away -

I would do anything for love
I would do anything for love
I would do anything for love
But I won't do that
I won't do that!

CODA

Girl:
Will you raise me up?
Will you help me down?
Will you get me right out of this Godforsaken town?
Will you make it all a little less cold?

Boy:
I can do that!
I can do that!

Girl:
Will you hold me sacred?
Will you hold me tight?
Can you colorize my life I'm so sick of black and white?
Can you make it all a little less old?

Boy:
I can do that!
I can do that!

Girl:
Will you make me some magic
With your own two hands?
Can you build an emerald city with these grains of sand?
Can you give me something I can take home?

Boy:
I can do that!
I can do that!

Girl:
Will you cater to every fantasy I go?
Will ya hose me down with holy water -if I get too hot -?
Will you take me to places I've never known?

Boy:
I can do that!
I can do that!

Girl:
After a while you'll forget everything
It was a brief interlude
And a Midsummer night's fling
And you'll see that it's time to move on

Boy:
I can do that!
I can do that!

LIFE IS A LEMON AND I WANT MY MONEY BACK

It's all or nothing
And nothing's all I ever get
Everytime I turn it on
I burn it up and burn it out

It's always something going wrong
That's the only guarantee
That's what this is all about

It's a never ending attack
Everything's lie and that's a fact
Life is a lemon and I want my money back!

And all the morons
And all the stooges with their coins
they're the ones who make the rules
It's not a game - it's just a rout

There's desperation
There's desperation in the air
It leaves a stain on all your dlothes
And no detergent gets it out

And we're always slipping thru the cracks
Then the movie's over - fade to black
Life is a lemon and I want my money back!

I want my money back
I want my money back

What about love?
It's Defective!
It's always breaking in half

What about sex?!
It's Defective!
It's never built to really last

What about your family?
It's Defective!
All the batteries are shot

What about your friends?
They're Defective!
All the parts are out of stock

What about hope?
It's Defective!
It's corroded and decayed

What about faith?
It's Defective!
It's tattered and it's frayed

What about your Gods?
They're Defective!
They forgot the warranty

What about your town?
It's Defective!
It's a dead end street to me

What about your school?
It's Defective!
It's a pack of useless lies

What about your work?
It's Defectiv!
It's a crock and then you die

What about your childhood?
It's Defective!
It's dead and buried in the past

What about your future?
It's Defective!
And you can shove it up your ass!

I want my money back
I want my money back

It's all or nothing
And nothing's all I ever get
Everytime I turn it on
I burn it up and burn it out

It's never ending attack
Everything's a lie and that's a fact
Life is a lemon and I want my money back!

And we're always slipping thru the cracks
Then the movie's over - fade to black
Life is a lemon and I want my money back!

ROCK AND ROLL DREAMS COME THROUGH

You can't run away forever
But there's nothing wrong with getting a good head start
You want to shut out the night
You want to shut down the sun
You want to shut away the pieces of a broken heart

Think of how we'd lay down together
We'd be listening to the radio so loud and so strong
Every golden nugget coming like a gift of the gods
Someone must have blessed us when he gave us those songs

I treasure your love
I never want to lose it
You've been through the fires of hell
And I know you've got the ashes to prove it
I treasure your love
I want to show you how to use it
You've been throught a lot of pain in the dirt
And I know you've got the scars to prove it

Remember everything that I told you
And I'm telling you again that it's true
When you're along and afraid
And you're completely amazed
To find there's nothing anybody can do
Keep on believing
And you'll discover baby

There's always something magic
There's always something new
And when you really need it the most
That't when rock and roll dreams come through
The beat is yours forever
The beat is always true
And when you really need it the most
That't when rock and roll dreams come through ... for you ...

Once upon a time was a backbeat
Once upon a time all the chords came to life
And the angels had guitars even before they had wings
If you hold onto a chorus you can get through the night

I treasure your love
I never want to close it
You've been through the fires of hell
And i know you've got the ashes to prove it
I treasure your love
I want to show you how to use it
You've been through a lot of pain in the dirt
And I know you've got the scars to prove it

Remember everything that I told you
And I'm telling you again that it's true
You're never alone cause you can put on the phones
And let the drummer tell your heart what to do
Keep on believing
And you'll discover baby

There's always something magic
There's always something new
And when you really really need it the most
That's when rock and roll dreams come through
The beat is your forever
The beat is always true
And when you really really need it the most
That's when rock and roll dreams come through ... for you ...

IT JUST WON'T QUIT

And I never rally sleep anymore
And I always get those dangerous dreams
And I never get aminute of peace
And I gotta wonder shat it means
And I gotta wonder what it means

Maybe it's nothing and I'm under the weather
Maybe it's just one of those bugs going round
Maybe I'm under spell and it's magic
Mybe there's a witch an office in town

Is this a blessing? Or is it a curse?
Does it get any better? Can it get any worse?
Will it go on forever? Or is it over tonight?
Does it come with the darkness? Does it bring out the light?
Is it richer than diamonds?
Or just a little cheaper than spit?
I don't know what it is but it just won't quit
I don't know what it is but it just won't quit
I don't know what it is but it just won't quit
I don't know what it is but it just won't quit
And there used to be such an easy way of living
And there used to be every hope in the world
And I used to get everything that I went after
But there never used to be this girl
But there never used to be this girl

Maybe I'm crazy and I'm losing my senses
Maybe I'm possessed by a spirit or such
Maybe i'm desperate and I've got no defenses
Can you get me a prescription for that one perfect touch?

Is this a blessing? Or is it a curse?
Does it get any better? Can it get any worse?
Will it go on forever? Or ist it over tonight?
Does it come with the darkness? Does it bring out the light?
It's stairway to heaven or a subway going down to the pits
I don't know what it is but it just won't quit
I don't know what it is but it just won't quit
I don't know what it is but it just won't quit
I don't know what it is but it just won't quit

Is this a blessing? Or is it a curse?
Does it get any better? Can it get any worse?
Will it go on forever? Or ist it over tonight?
Does it come with the darkness? Does it bring out the light?
Is it richer than diamonds?
Or just a little cheaper than spit?

I don't know what it is but it just won't quit
I don't know what it is but it just won't quit
I don't know what it is but it just won't quit
I don't know what it is but it just won't quit......

There was a time when nothing really mattered
There was a time when there was nothing I didn't know
There was a time when I knew just what I was living for
There was a time and the time was a long ago
There was a time and the time was so long ago
And I never really sleep anymore.........

OUT OF THE FRYING PAN (AND INTO THE FIRE)

It's only two o'clock and the temperature's beginning to soar
And all around the city you see the walking wounded and the living dead
It's never been this got and I've never been so bored
And breathing is just no fun anymore
Then I saw you like a summer dream
And you're the answer to every prayer that I ever said
I saw you like a summer dream
And you're the answer to every prayer that I ever said

You can feel the pulse of the paement racing like a runaway horse
The subways are sizzling and the skin of the street is gleaming with sweat
I've seen you sitting on the steps outside
And you were looking so restless and reckless and lost
I think it's time for you to come inside
And I'll be waiting here with something that you'll never forget
I think it's time for you to come inside
And I'll be waiting here with something that you'll never forget

Come on! come on!
And there'll be no turning back
You were only killing time and it can kill you right back
Come on! come on!
It's time to burn up the fuse
You got nothing to do and even less to lose
You got nothing to do and even less to lose

So wander down the ancient hallway
Taking the stairs only one at a time
Follow the sound of my heartbeat now
I'm in the room at the top, you're at the end of the line
Open the door and lay down on the bed
The sun is just a ball of desire

And I wanna take you out of the frying pan (and into the fire)
Out of the frying pan (and into the fire)
Out of the frying pan (and into the fire)

And into the fire! fire! fire!
And into the fire! fire! fire!
And into the fire! fire! fire!
And into the fire!

OBJECTS IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR MAY APPEAR CLOSER THAN THEY ARE

The skies were pure and the fields were green
And the sun was brighter than it´s ever been
When I grew up with my best friend Kenny
We were close as any brothers that you ever knew

It was always summer and the future called
We were ready for a adventures and we wanted them all
And there was so much left to dream
And so much time to make it real

But I can still recall the sting of all the tears when he was gone
They said he crashed and burned
I know I´ll never learn why any boy should die so young

We were racing - we were soldiers of fortune
We got in trouble but we sure got around
There are times I think I see him peeling out of the dark
I tink he´s right behind me now and he´s gaining ground!

But it was longer ago and it was far away
Oh God it seems so very far
And if life is just a highway - then the soul is just a car
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are

And when the sun descended and the night arose
I heard my father cursing everyone he knows
He was dangerous and drunk and defeated
And corroded by failure and envy and hate

There were endless winters and the dreams would freeze
Nowhere to hide and no leaves on the trees
And my father´s eyes were black as he hit me again and again and again

I know I still believe he´d never let me leave
I had to run away alone
So many threats and fears - so many wasted years before my life
became my own

And though the nightmares should be over
Now some of the terrors are still intact
I´ll hear that ugly coarse and violent voice
And then he grabs me from behind and then he pulls me back!

But it was long ago and it was far away
Oh God it seems so very far
And if life is just a higway - then the soul is just a car
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are

There was a beauty living on the edge of town
And she always put the top up and the hammer down
And she taught me everything I´ll ever know
About the mystery and the muscle of love
The stars would glimmer and the moon would glow
I´m in the back seat with my Julie like a Romeo
And the signs along the highway all said
Caution! Kids At Play!

Those were the rites of spring and we did everything -
There was salvation every night
We got our dreams reborn and our upholstery torn
But everything we tried was right

She used her body just like a bandage
She used my body just like a wound
I´ll probably never know where she disappeared
But I can see her rising up out the back seat now
Just like an angel rising up from a tomb!

She used her body just like a bandage
She used my body just like a wound
I´ll probably never know where she disappeared
But I can see her rising up out the back seat now...

WASTED YOUTH

I remember everything
I remember every little thing as if it happend only yesterday
I was barely seventeen
And I once killed a boy with a Fender guitar
I don´t remember if it was a Telecaster or a Stratocaster
But I do remember that it had a heart of chrome
And a voice like a horny angel

I don´t remember if it was a Telecaster or a Stratocaster
But I do remember that it wasn´t at all easy
It required the perfect combination of the right power chords
And the precise angle from which to strike
The guitar bled for about a week afterward
And the blood was dark and rich, like wild berries
The blood of the guitar was Chuck Berry red
The guitar bled for about a week afterward
But it rung out beautifully
And I was able to play notes that I had never even heard before

So I took my guitar
And I smashed it against the wall
I smashed it against the floor
I smashed it against the body of a varsity cheerleader
Smashed it against the hood of a car
Smashed it against a 1981 Harley Davidson
The Harley howled in pain
The guitar howled in heat
And I ran up the stairs to my parent´s bedroom
Mommy and daddy were sleeping in the moonlight
Slowly I opened the door

Creeping in the shwadows, right up to the food of their bed
I raised the guitar high above my head
And just as I was about to bring the guitar crashing down upon the center of the bed
My father woke up screaming
STOP! Wait a minute!
Stop at boy!
What do you think you´re doing?
That´s no way to treat an expensive musical instrument!
And I said, God damn it daddy!
You know I love you
But you´ve got a hell of a lot to learn about rock and roll!!!

EVERYTHING LOUDER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE

I know that I will never be politically correct
I don´t give a damn about my lack of etiquette
As far as I´m concerned - the world could still be flat
And if the thrill is gone - then it´s time to take it back!
If the thrill is gone - then it´s time to take it back!

Who am I? Why am I here?
Forget the questions! Someone gimme another beer!
What´s the meaning of life?
What´s the meaning of it all?
You gotta learn to dance before you learn to crawl!
You gotta learn to dance before you learn to crawl!

So sign up all you raw recruits
Throw away those designer suits
You got your weapons cocked and your targets in your sights
There´s a party raging somewhere in the world
You gotta serve your country - you gotta service your girl
You´re all enlisted in the armies of the night

And I ain´t in it for the power
And I ain´t in it for my health
I ain´t in it for the glory of anything at all
And I sure ain´t in it for the wealth
But I´m in it till it´s over and I just can´t stop
If you wanna get it done
You got to do it yourself

And I like my music like I like life
Everything louder than everything else!
Everything louder than everything else!
Everything louder than everything else!
Everything louder than everything else!
Everything louder than everything else!

Wasted! Youth!
Wasted! Youth!
Wasted! Youth!
Wasted! Youth!

They got a file on me and it´s mile long
And they say that they got all of the proof
That I´m just another case of arrested development
And just another wasted youth

They say that I´m in need of some radical discipline
They say I gotta face the truth
That I´m just another case of arrested development
And just another wasted youth

They say I´m wild and I´m reckless
I should be acting my age
I´m an impressionable child in a tumultuous world
And they say I´m at a difficult stage

But it seems to me to the contrary
Of all the crap they´re going to put on the page
That a wasted youth is better by far
Then a wise and productive old age!
That a wasted youth is better by far
Then a wise and productive old age!
That a wasted youth is better by far
Then a wise and productive old age!
That a wasted youth is better by far
Then a wise and productive old age!
That a wasted youth is better by far
Then a wise and productive old age!
That a wasted youth is better by far
Then a wise and productive old age!

If you want my views of history then there´s something you should know
The three men I admire most are Curly, Larry an Mo!
If you don´t worry ´bout the future - sooner or later it´s the past
And if they say thrill is gone - then it´s time to take it back
If the thrill is gone then it´s time to take back

So sign up all you raw recruits
Throw away those stupid suits
You got your weapons cocked and your targets in your sights
There´s a party raging somewhere in the world
You gotta serve your country - you gotta service your girl
You´re all inducted in the armies of the night

And I ain´t in it for the power
And I ain´t in it for my health
I ain´t in it for the glory of anything at all
And I sure ain´t in it for the wealth
But I´m in it till it´s over and I just can´t stop
If you wanna get it done
You got to do it yourself
And I like my music like I like life
Everything louder than everything else!
Everything louder than everything else!
Everything louder than everything else!
Everything louder than everything else!
Everything louder than everything else!

GOOD GIRLS GO TO HEAVEN (BUT THE BAD GIRLS GO EVERYWHERE)

When the wind is howling through your window pane
It's not the only pain of the night
Your burning up in your bed, you gotta fever of love
And there's not an antibody insight
Hey Jenny, Jenny why are you crying
There's a beauty of a moon in the sky
But I guess when you've been leading such a sheltered life
You never lift your head and look so high
You don't have a lot
But it's all that you've got
And you can turn it into more than it seems
Just give it a shot
Fantisize every movement
And imagine every inch of your dreams
And no one said it had to be real
But it's gotta be something you can reach out and feel now
It ain't right
It ain't fair
Castles fall in the sand
And we fade in the air
And the good girls go to Heaven, but the bad girls go everywhere
Ooh now good girls go to Heaven, but the bad girls go everywhere
Sombody told me so
Somebody told me now I know
Every night in my prayers
I'll be praying
That the good girls go to Heaven, but the bad girls go everywhere
When the sweat is sizzling
On you skin in the dark
And your desperate now for somewhere to turn
Every muscle's in rebellion
Every nerve is on edge
And every limb is being erotically burned
Hey Johnny, Johnny why are you shaking?
When a boy should do whatever he can
You've been nothing but an angel
Every day of your life And now you wonder what it's like to be bad
You don't have a lot
But it's all that you've got
And you can turn it into more than it seems
Just give it a shot
Fantisize every movement
And imagine every inch of your dreams
And no one said it had to be real
But it's gotta be something you've been wanting to feel now
It ain't right
It ain't fair
Castles fall in the sand
And we fade in the air
And the good boys go to Heaven, but the bad boys go everywhere
Good boys go to Heaven, but the bad boys go everywhere
Sombody told me so
Somebody told me now I know
Every night in my prayers
I'll be praying
That the good boys go to Heaven, but the bad boys go everywhere
Every time I try and dream you
I can't beleive how hard it's been to
Conjure up your face and trace your body in the air
All the seconds go on forever
But the thirds and the forth ones are even better
And every time I do it just a little bit longer
Every time I dream, it's just a little bit stronger than
Real Life
And no one said it had to be real
But it's gotta be something you can reach out and feel now
It ain't right
It ain't fair
Castles fall in the sand
And we fade in the air
And the good girls go to Heaven, but the bad girls go everywhere
Ooh now good girls go to Heaven, but the bad girls go everywhere
Sombody told me so
Somebody told me now I know
Every night in my prayers
I'll be praying
That the good girls go to Heaven, but the bad girls go everywhere

LOST BOYS AND GOLDEN GIRLS

Lost boys and golden girls
Down on the corner, and all around the world
Lost boys and golden girls
Down on the corner and all around, all around the world

It doesn't matter where they're going
Or wherever they've been
'Cause they've got one thing in common, it's true
They'll never let a night like tonight go to waste
And let me tell ya' something, neither will you
Neither will you
Neither will you

We've gotta' fast, we were born out of time
Born out of time and alone
And we'll never be as young as we are right now
Runnin' away and runnin' for home
Runnin' for home

It doesn't matter where they're going
Or wherever they've been
'Cause they've got one thing in common, it's true
They'll never let a night like tonight go to waste
And let me tell ya' something, neither will you
Neither will you
Neither will you
Neither will you

Lost boys and golden girls
Down on the corner, and all around the world
Lost boys and golden girls
Down on the corner and all around, and all around the world
