Give It Up illustrates the sociopolitical side of Curtis Mayfield. The pulsating, horn-driven "Move On Up" has all the social significance of his early positive songs with the Impressions, and "We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue" showed the world that Mayfield was possessed of unique insight. "Back to the World" speaks of soldiers returning from Vietnam, while "Billy Jack" and "Superfly" are apt depictions of inner-city characters. This also contains motivators like "We Got to Have Peace," "Keep On Keeping On," "People Get Ready," and "Mighty, Mighty Spade and Whitey."
