Manfred Mann's A's B's & EP's is a collection of single and EP tracks recorded for EMI's HMV label between 1964-1966. Most of the band's best songs can be found here: "Do Wah Diddy Diddy," "5-4-3-2-1," "Sha La La," "Come Tomorrow," "I Can't Believe What You Say," and "Pretty Flamingo." The disc also includes a couple of tracks from the group's rare instrumental EP that served as their swan song for HMV ("[I Can't Get No] Satisfaction" and "I Got You Babe") as well as their amazing version of the obscure Ellie Greenwich/Jeff Barry song "That's All I Ever Want From You Baby." What the disc doesn't include is any sense of purpose. The title of the disc and the archival-style packaging of the disc would lead one to believe that the songs would be represented in a way that would make sense -- or at least that the songs would be labeled in some way. Instead what listeners get is a random selection of tracks from their singles and EPs. The liner notes don't even bother to mention which songs were A-sides, which were B-sides, and which were EP tracks (unless you read the essay by Martin Hutchinson, which does make mention of some of the A-sides; he also observes that the band released poppier songs as A-sides and R&B or blues songs on the flip, but the lack of documentation makes it hard for the listener to see this) or give exact dates when songs were recorded or released. They also fumbled the artwork; including reproductions of a few of the actual EP sleeves only makes one wish they had found a way to include them all -- single sleeves, too. So basically what we have here is a disc that is a collector's nightmare, but for the casual fan it is a pretty satisfying collection of Manfred Mann's work. What EMI really needs to do is just break down and round up all the Manfred Mann they own, throw it into a well-documented box set, and stop doing piecemeal reissues like this.
