Leavell recently released Back to the Woods, a stripped-down tribute to blues piano pioneers including Leroy Carr, Little Brother Montgomery and Otis Spann. "It was important to me [to do] this project to expose the piano as an important instrument in blues history," says Leavell. Highlights include a rollicking take on Charlie Spand's "I Got to Go Blues" (featuring Col. Bruce Hampton) and Carr's smoky heartbreak ballad "Evening Train." Leavell practiced 30 songs at his Georgia home; when it came time to record, he invited some friends. One session featured Mayer and Richards in the studio at the same time, trading licks on Spann's "Boots and Shoes."

Pianist and ace session player Chuck Leavell's many fans consider him to be a true master of his instrument; his fills and solos possess imagination, lightning-quick twists and turns, imaginative chord voicings, and a very physical attack. His detractors claim he plays far too many notes and plays them loudly, that he cannot be a backing or ensemble player because he always has to stand out. One has to ask this question of the latter group: if these criticisms are accurate, would he be sought out by the Allman Brothers, George Harrison, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and the Black Crowes (just to name a few)? Back to the Woods: A Tribute to the Pioneers of Blues Piano is a fine collection of 15 standards from the greats of the blues piano canon, with tunes by Leroy Carr, Little Brother Montgomery, Otis Spann, Memphis Slim, Charlie Spand, and Charlie Calhoun, among others. Leavell is backed by Chris Enghauser on upright bass and Louis Romanos on drums throughout, but there is a slew of well-known guests on the session to boot: Danny Barnes plays loads of guitar and banjo, Keith Richards and John Mayer each appear on a couple of tracks (both on Spann's "Boots and Shoes"), and Randall Bramblett plays saxophone on a few more. Carr is obviously the muse here; five of his tunes are included in this mix, including "Mean Mistreater." Other highlights include Barrelhouse Buck McFarland's "I Got to Go Blues," the title track authored by Spand, and the reimagined Skip James number "If You Haven't Any Hay." This is a spirited collection, played and recorded beautifully. If anything, perhaps it's a bit too clean, but that's a trifling. The set also includes song annotations by Leavell and a liner essay by blues historian Larry Cohn.

Blues pianists have a much lower profile than their guitar-toting counterparts. Chuck Leavell’s tribute to the pioneers of blues piano is hugely enjoyable -  no dry exercise in history, nor imitation. He is the ideal person for the project, which his son-in-law proposed: ‘There’s been a lot of tributes done to jazz guys, to blues guitar players. But nobody’s really done it for blues piano players. I think you’re the guy to do it.' Largely self-taught, Chuck Leavell is one of the finest blues-based keyboardists;  the only one who is also internationally-renowned environmental activist, author and tree farmer! Once of the Allman Brothers, for more than a quarter of a century Chuck Leavell has been The Rolling Stones’ primary keyboardist and ‘unofficial musical director.’

Back to the Woods offers great grooves, warm vocals and superb piano. It also has nice contributions from guitarists Keith Richards and John Mayer, double bassist Chris Enghauser and multi-instrumentalist Danny Barnes. Chuck does salute Ray Charles and Memphis Slim, but most of the album addresses earlier blues piano heroes like Little Brother Montgomery, Charlie Spand (who recorded the original version of its title-piece, in 1929) and Leroy Carr.

Nur für den Fall, dass es tatsächlich noch Freunde der Rockmusik geben sollte, die den guten Chuck Leavell noch nicht kennen: Der Mann wurde im Jahr 1972 Mitglied bei der Allman Brothers Band und veredelte unter anderem den Klassiker "Jessica" mit seinem Spiel. Nach dem Split gründete er seine eigene Combo Sea Level und da es mit dieser 1978 gerade richtig gut am Anlaufen war - und es dazu finanzielle Unstimmigkeiten mit den Brothers gab - zog er es vor, bei der Reunion lieber nicht mit von der Partie zu sein. Seit 1981 gehört er der Tourband der Rolling Stones an und hat sich dort zu einem sehr wichtigen Mitglied gemausert.

Seit Anfang der Siebziger ist Leavell ein sehr gefragter Studiomusiker und seit 1998 veröffentlicht er auch Soloalben, wobei das mir nun vorliegende "Back To The Woods..." sein insgesamt fünftes ist. Was er damit im Sinn hatte, beschreibt er in den Liner Notes. Nämlich den Pionieren des Blues-Pianos seinen Tribut zu zollen, ohne deren Spiel 100 %ig zu kopieren. Vielmehr wollte er dem ganzen einen etwas moderneren Anstrich verpassen, ohne die Tradition sowie die Charakteristiken alter Meister wie Otis Spann, Memphis Slim oder Leeroy Carr entscheidend zu verändern.

Ist das vorliegende also vor allem ein Pianoalbum? In erster Linie natürlich ja, aber erstens ist bei jedem Track auch eine Band am Start und zweitens war es noch nie Leavells Art, sich dick und fett in den Vordergrund zu stellen. Und so bleibt sein Spiel während dieser 15 Songs auch immer songdienlich, dezent und mit viel Geschmack ausgestattet. Der Protagonist war zwar noch nie ein Sänger vor dem Herrn, aber zu diesen bluesigen Titeln passt seine Stimme erstaunlich gut. Und bei fünf der Songs stehen dann auch Gäste vor dem Mikro. Da wäre zum Beispiel der Col. Bruce Hampton, der den Boogie Woogie "I Got To Go Blues" stimmlich veredelt.

Danny Barnes steht für "Naptown Blues" und "Memphis Town" vor dem Mikro, ebenso wie die richtig gute Candi Staton für "Mean Mistreater" und "All The Blues Is Wrong". Aber mit John Mayer (bei "Wish Me Well" und "Boots And Shoes") und Keith Richards ("Evening Train" und "Boots And Shoes") hatte sich Leavell sogar noch richtige Rock-Prominenz eingeladen, die es ihm mit ihren großartigen Gitarrenspuren dann auch dankten. Und logischerweise war auch Chucks alter Kumpel Randall Bramblett aus seligen Sea Level-Tagen angetreten, um immerhin auf drei der Tracks mitzuwirken.

Geboten wird ein Bluesalbum der Spitzenklasse, dessen gut 56 Minuten so schnell zu verfliegen scheinen, dass man jedes Mal mit einem erstaunten »Schon?« wieder in Richtung Repeattaste läuft. Einen wahrhaft grandiosen Job macht auch die 'feste' Rhythmusabteilung in Gestalt von Chris Enghauser (am akustischen Bass) und Louis Romanos (Schlagzeug), die das exakt richtige Feeling für diese Nummern auf der Pfanne haben. Die Produktion ist herrlich erdig und die Tracklist wurde so clever ausgewählt, dass jederzeit Bewegung in dieser Platte sowie auch der Fußwippe des Hörers ist.

Wer auf Pianoblues steht und diese Musik nicht unbedingt mit dem Schleier vieler Jahrzehnte versehen haben muss, der kommt an "Back To The Woods..." nicht vorbei. Die beteiligten Musiker sind allererste Sahne und das Material (das glücklicherweise aus vielen, eher unbekannteren Stücken besteht) wird jederzeit mit viel Hochachtung und Respekt behandelt. Ein wunderschönes Bluesalbum, das natürlich gerade jetzt in den kalten Monaten ganz besonders viel Spaß macht. Dazu kommt auch noch ein im Digipak fest eingeheftetes, sehr ausführliches Booklet, das die Vollbedienung bzw. das Rundumpaket ganz vortrefflich abrundet.
