More prolific than D'Angelo and Terence Trent D'Arby combined, one-man rock & soul revivalist Lenny Kravitz kept traditional pop values alive through much of the '90s. From the Motown-perfect "It Ain't Over Til It's Over" to the Beatlesesque "Let Love Rule," Kravitz has always inhabited his influences with a genuine spirit that transcends imitation. The 15 tracks found here provide a surprisingly coherent reminder of just how much the artist has accomplished in a relatively short time. And even if his biggest hit, "Are You Gonna Go My Way," falls short of its Hendrix target, Kravitz's cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman" still rocks in a pleasingly Neanderthal way. An infectious new cut, "Again," fits neatly alongside sturdy Kravitz originals such as "Fly Away," "Mr. Cab Driver," and "Black Velveteen," showcasing a talent whose postmodern pop should play well into the new century.

It's not all that hard to forge a fusion of hard rock, funk, and pop, but adding enough personality to make that fusion hold together and soar is another matter entirely. For the past decade, Lenny Kravitz has made a mission out of that sort of boundary blurring, and the results, as chronicled on this 15-song best of, are as fascinating as they are fun. Boasting an even mix of his in-your-face attitude -- as evidenced on "Rock 'n' Roll Is Dead" and his hit cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman" -- and his velvety smooth croon -- best conveyed by the steamy "It Ain't Over 'til It's Over" -- this collection shows Kravitz to be both aware of his roots and able to transcend them. The career-spanning disc offers ample time to appreciate both Kravitz's depth as a songwriter, evident on the never-before-released "Again," and the musical virtuosity displayed by his handling of virtually every instrument heard in these grooves. He's still a work in progress, but Lenny Kravitz has earned the right to look back at his impressive accomplishments -- and that's a view any fan of no-holds-barred classic rock will appreciate as well.

David Sprague - Barnes & Noble

Lenny Kravitz's greatest gift is that he's a master synthesist, pulling together different sounds and styles from eras past to create a sound that isn't necessarily blazingly original, but fresh due to his craft and sheer mastery of the studio. Since he was an unabashed classicist, his records often suffered the brunt of nasty criticism, but they were often very good, particularly early in his career before he indulged in the mannerisms of guitar-blasting stadium rock. Even if Circus and 5 were sunk by their own bloat, they still had good singles, as did those early albums, so the 2000 collection Greatest Hits is a terrific encapsulation of Kravitz at the peak of his talents. Certainly, there are some fan favorites missing, and the non-chronological sequencing is maddening (two of his three worst singles are within the first three songs), but it does boast the magnificent new single "Again," along with such seminal Kravitz moments as "Are You Gonna Go My Way," "Mr. Cabdriver," "Stand By My Woman," "Always on the Run," "Believe," "Let Love Rule," and "It Ain't Over Til It's Over," which is enough to make this a first-class greatest-hits compilation. After all, it doesn't just have all the main songs, it also illustrates that he indeed is a master synthesist.
