From GRP comes the very pleasantly surprising label debut from DIANA KRALL, Only Trust Your Heart. Like the best jazz singers, the Canadian-born Krall is also a pianist, certainly an adept one, and this melodic/harmonic touch surely gives her a leg up. Also, like the best singers, she understands the value, indeed the necessity, of a sensitive, supportive rhythm section. In bassists Ray Brown or Christian McBride,the balletic drummer Lewis Nash and tenor soloist Stanley Turrentine (three tracks) she has a dream team. As on all GRP recordings, the sonics are superb. Her voice, steady of intonation, flexible and well-shaded, is resonant and listener-friendly on Benny Carter's "Only Trust Your Heart" (given a light Latin tint) and the assertively bluesy, up-tempo "I Love Being Here With You," both of which should find favor on straight-ahead formats. Good show.

Sängerin oder Pianistin? Diana Krall übernimmt beide Rollen, wirkt aber an den Tasten überzeugender. Sie kann behutsam spielen nach Art ihres Lehrherrn Jimmy Rowles, supersparsam wie Ahmad Jamal, aber auch kraftvoll und zuweilen funky. Die Stimme pendelt zwischen Härte à la Carmen McRae und etwas überstrapaziertem gleitendem Anpeilen der Töne, dürfte aber noch ausbaufähig sein. Ihre hilfreichen Assistenten: Ray Brown oder Christian McBride, Lewis Nash (Drums) und ein besonders gut ausgeschlafener Stanley Turrentine (Tenor).
