Kitarō has released numerous recordings of merit within his vast oeuvre, but few are of as high a quality as SILK ROAD. Recorded in 1980 (before his signing to Geffen started the avalanche), there are many moments of timeless beauty throughout, interlaced with some gentle guitar picking and shifting Eastern flute tones. The beautiful tranquillity that is SILK ROAD makes for an often becalming aural narcotic, the occasional ingestion of which might just soothe the soul.

Kitarō's music is fluid and harmonic, as he blends smooth electronic lines with influences from traditional Japanese music, rock, and the romantic Western tradition. Silk Road is a phenomenal success and very possibly the best Kitarō release. There are incredible transitions throughout the pieces, making this a true masterpiece and a treasure to own.

All Music Guide

Originally the soundtrack to a Japanese television mini-series, Silk Road set the standard for electronic/spiritual albums in the mid-1980s. Kitarō's placement of synthesizer center-stage and densely layering complementary textures made Silk Road new age's innovative and influential equivalent of Sgt. Pepper's. Fluid synthesizer leads, sweeping washes, and sequenced rhythms evoke sacred-quest imagery that is imbued with a contemplative serenity. Soaring synthesizer lines suggest yearning for spiritual experience, while deep, rolling bass tones emulate a cosmic Om. The themes are continued in Silk Road II; both recordings are tastefully reserved - especially compared with the bombastic electronic orchestrations that mar many of Kitarō's later efforts.
