Sacred Journey of Ku-Kai is a series of peace-themed albums by new age artist Kitarō, inspired by the classic Buddhist pilgrimage to the 88 sacred temples on Japan's island of Shikoku. Each album in the series has been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.

First in a new series of conceptual albums, Kitarō's Sacred Journey of Ku-kai is a foray into a unique perspective of an issue that is on everyone's mind this day.  Inspired by the events of September 11, the music is intended to address a holistic solution to personal and global concerns juxtaposed against forward-thinking views of our own spiritual development.

Over the last year, Kitarō has begun a traditional Japanese spiritual pilgrimage to a number of temples in Japan. Known as the Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage, this journey will take him on a circular path to all 88 temples on the island of Shikoku (Japan).  On Kitarō's journey, he has sampled bell sounds from each temple as a basis for the compositions on Sacred Journey of Ku-kai.  The music will also feature guest artists from around the world, including Tibetan Master and flutist Nawang Khechog.  It is Kitarō's intention that his message of peace will help people appreciate the nature of our individual experiences and that they can only unify us all in global and spiritual co-existence.

Although the general impression of Kitarō's music is that it consists almost entirely of undifferentiated space rock synth noodling, the truth is actually a bit more interesting than that. (Which is not to say that there aren't sections of The Sacred Journey of Ku-Kai that sound like someone taped down random keys on an old synthesizer and then went to get a cup of coffee.) This lengthy piece of program music features plenty of real instruments, particularly woodwinds and percussion, along with bits of birdsong and other nature sounds. Later in the album, unexpected elements like some old-fashioned prog rock electric guitar (on "Flow" and "Evening Sun") and even the out-of-nowhere appearance of a full choir of Buddhist monks ("Nen") add further interest to the sound. It's still an uninterrupted bliss-out, and anyone who requires such subtleties as melody and rhythm in their music will be driven insane, but there's more to The Sacred Journey of Ku-Kai than the previously uninitiated might expect.
