Cirque Ingenieux was the first Broadway score that Kitarō made, and it's one of his most ambitious projects. The play is about a young girl who falls in love with a circus and discovers the strange, wonderful, occasionally haunting world of the cirque ingenieux. There is no dialogue to the play; it is told solely through visuals and music, which makes Kitarō's score integral to the success of the production. He rises to the challenge, drawing from not only classical and worldbeat sources, but also contemporary styles. The result is a swirling, intoxicating array of sounds that are both enchanting and haunting.

Created, composed and performed as the backdrop to the Broadway production, Cirque Ingenieux, Kitarō soundtrack is a moving auditory experience in the European Cirque tradition. Set at the turn of the century, ‘Cirque Ingenieux’ is a story of a girl who falls in love with a single ring circus. Returning to the empty tent later that night, she discovers a magical display of performance artistry told through visual musical effects. Kitarō’s score ranges from lilting waltzes to haunting melodies piercing together evocative and moving elements of this grand scheme.

"Cirque Ingenieux" is a melding of disparate worlds. Its orignal creator, Neil Goldberg, joined forces with theatrical producer Ken Gentry, and director Joe Leonardo, to bring the European Cirque tradition to the United States in a manner that had never been seen before: a Broadway-style production with a strong story-line. This was a new situation for circus performance artists which were asked to act a role, to create complex characters. To a large degree, it was the work of Kitarō that helped bring together the different elements of this grand scheme. Like the other artists involved, he was asked to extend himself beyond his previous accomplishments. His contribution was integral to the job of telling the story of cirque Ingenieux and he rose to the challenge with a score that ranges in style and depth from a lilting Viennese waltz to a driving contemporary beat and some painfully haunting melodies, veritable calls from "the other side".

Working with these elements: a rich Kitarō score, literally awesome performance artistry and all the tools of the Broadway theatre, a unique story began to emerge. Without the use of dialogue, it had to be told purely through visual effect and music. What resulted is a simple tale with surprising resonance and an ability to touch the audience on a very personal level.

Set at the turn of the century, the story follows young Sarah as she falls in love with an old-fashioned, single-ring circus, returns to the empty tent late that night  and finds herself drawn into a fascinating and disturbing world of fantasy. With a loving older brother following close on her heels, she travels through the solar system, chooses her destiny from among an endless series of doors, waltzes with bizarre new friends, watches her brother disappear before her eyes and then follows him into the underworld where only she can successfully orchestrate his escape. In the end, she finds the strength and ability within herself to become a performer of grace and beauty, and to strive for the artistry she witnessed before embarking on her bizarre journey. Woven into the story are elements of loyalty, spiritual guidance from beyond the "veil", and perhaps most importantly the strength of laughter and sheer joy of life.
