2002 CD Domo Records 73002-2

Recorded at Mochi House, USA and Japan.

This two-disc set featuring 19 compositions is a wonderful glimpse into the great civilizations past through the eyes of musical pioneer and Grammy Award winning composer, Kitarō.  In An Ancient Journey, Kitarō takes his audience on a trek to worlds far away.  Listeners embark on a mysterious crusade, witnessing "the texture, life and spirit of the world's ancient people." Traditional Middle Eastern and Chinese instruments in addition to one of his favorite technological advances, the analogue synthesizer, make An Ancient Journey a melodic voyage, which is vintage Kitarō.  In addition to his signature arrangements, the recording features a new addition to Kitarō's musician family, Kristin Kanda on flute.

Kitarō was commissioned to record the accompanying soundtrack to the NHK television special, "Messages From the Past".

Kitarō's double-disc An Ancient Journey is collection of gentle, ethereal compositions utilizing his unique style of performance. Blending traditional Japanese instruments with lush keyboards, Kitarō crafted some very relaxing and meditative music on this album. Like any album in this genre, this is for very specific tastes only, but this is definitely one of the superior artists working in new age music. With gorgeous melodies and a penchant for keeping things low-key, Kitarō's An Ancient Journey is a proper follow-up to 2001's Ancient that should keep fans happy and possibly gain him new followers within the genre.

Bradley Torreano - All Music Guide

Quick on the heels of 2001's Ancient, Japanese synthesist Kitarō returns with another CD based loosely on themes of ancient global sites, a template that's growing as old as the sites that inspire him. But while those sites become more inspiring with age, Kitarō's hackneyed sampled choirs, syrupy strings, and that whooping synthesizer line he's used since Astral Voyage a quarter century ago are becoming more kitschy. However, there are hints of something new on An Ancient Journey that make it Kitarō's best album in a few years. His use of environmental sounds goes beyond cliché, weaving them into the music as rhythms and counterpoint instead of simple backdrops. In addition, Kitarō plays Native American flute on several tracks, and the simplicity and one-octave range of the instrument seem to focus him into a delicate, more personal sound heard on pieces like "Waves of Sand" and "Inca." But he also finds fresh life on one of his patented dervishes, "Sitara IV," playing electric sitar over a modal percussion groove. As a double CD, An Ancient Journey is bloated, but there's an album's worth of music that nearly fulfills the promise of Kitarō.

AN ANCIENT JOURNEY was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best New Age Album. Although this set is entitled AN ANCIENT JOURNEY, in the hands of Kitarō history is only half the story. The musician creates an atmospheric sense of space, and refuses to clutter it up, leaving one to feel that he's speaking as much about the future as the past. At the very least, he suggests that the spiritual truths unlocked by ancient civilizations have yet to be fully realized. Of course, this drama is also achieved by conventional Kitarō methods--the electronic droplets of "Whisper," or the orchestral sweep of "Maya Magic," for instance--but less so than in other productions. For the most part, this is an understated, imagistic album, one that roams freely through time and space.

Kitarō's two-disc An Ancient Journey holds true to its title and has the feel and texture of a grand historical novel. These wordless, melodic compositions fuse elements from the four corners of the globe and are larger in scope than most new age works. With its mix of flutes and orchestral synth work, the six-minute "Daichi" is a cinematic feast for the ears and very well could be the highlight of this sprawling, magical album. That said, do explore everything An Ancient Journey has to offer.
