Chaka Khan's career is a rich one. As part of Rufus, she brought the funk home through the 1970s, across a staggering nine albums recorded with the band. She then repeated her success across a stronger solo career that spanned three decades. Epiphany is a chunky compilation that showcases the full range of Khan's work, embracing ballads, deep funkers, and jazzy groovers. Kicking off the proceedings is the blissful "Ain't Nobody" — probably the song most closely associated with Khan — and one of the last things she recorded with Rufus. It originally appeared on 1983's live Stompin' at the Savoy, and Khan's Rufus-era output is completed here with another Savoy track, the Stevie Wonder-penned "Tell Me Something Good." But there are other gems too, from chart-toppers to less-remembered nuggets. Khan's treatment of Prince's "I Feel for You," which features guest musicians Melle Mel and Stevie Wonder, is still a treat. Ashford & Simpson gifted "I'm Every Woman" to Khan, and gave her a number one hit upon its initial release; "The End of a Love Affair," meanwhile, takes its cue from Ella Fitzgerald — to whom the song is dedicated, and which allows Khan to utilize her voice in an entirely different way. There's more versatility in the funky jazz of "And the Melody Still Lingers On (A Night in Tunisia)" and, while the brash "Papillon (aka Hot Butterfly)" is a weak link, this is still a wonderful compilation, packed with a fair representation of Khan's far-reaching canon. The perfect armchair companion.

Chaka Khan is the most iconic post-Aretha pop-R&B diva, from vocal inimitability to pneumatic pulchritude (cf. Chaka, 1978, front cover). In the '70s she elevated Rufus from mediocre funk to hit-single greatness, and if her '80-'90s work has been uneven, it still includes more great tracks than there's room for here. This set covers a broad stylistic range, from "I Feel for You" (written by Prince), "I'm Every Woman," and two tracks from the Rufus reunion album to a pretty MOR ballad co-written with Bruce Hornsby and two jazz efforts, the lushly-arranged standard "The End of a Love Affair" and a funky reworking of Dizzy Gillespie's most famous tune, retitled "And the Melody Still Lingers On (Night in Tunisia)." And for those who have all the albums, there's a generous five brand-new tracks (with Me'Shell NdegeOcello on two), each one much better than whatever Mary J. Blige is fronting with this year.

Epiphany: The Best Of Chaka Khan Volume 1 is the first ever compilation of Chaka Khan's hit singles. It contains a good mix of her classic songs and her more recent hits, all of which mark major points in her 25-year recording career

"Tell Me Something Good" (the live version from the album Stompin' At the Savoy, 1983) marks her last days as the powerhouse lead singer for the band Rufus. The song, written by Stevie Wonder was one of the standout singles that made Rufus featuring Chaka Khan such a hot act in the late 70s. "I'm Every Woman" marks her debut as a solo artist in 1979, showcasing even more her agile and broad vocal range she honed while with Rufus. Other peak periods are represented by the singles "Ain't Nobody" (also from Stompin' at the Savoy) and the title track from her 1985 album I Feel For You (a remake of (the Artist Formerly Know As) Prince tune) which helped Chaka maintain a steady musical presence throughout her solo career.

This collection also includes minor hit singles like "And the Melody Still Lingers On (A Night In Tunisia)" from the Chaka Khan album where longtime producer, Arif Mardin had lyrics added especially for Khan to sing on this remake of the Dizzy Gillespie classic. Khan showcases heavy vocal acrobatics on this tune and her ability to move between R'n'B and jazz with ease. Her comfort with singing jazz is evident on "End of a Love Affair," featuring her smoky, punctuated vocals from this single off her CK album. Rounding out this collection is the searing, 'Quiet Storm' ballad "Through The Fire" (from I Feel For You), and "I Know You, I Live You," (also from Chaka Khan), a sleeper hit that would have done just as well on the airwaves as it did on the disco dance floors.

Avid fans of Khan would not waste money buying this latest release simply because of the new material. The first single off Epiphany, "Never Miss the Water," is a good quality dance track that features bass goddess, Me'Shell Ndegeocello and introduces this generation to Khan's powerful vocals. She does a fine job on ABBA's "Everywhere," a song reworked with a bit of a reggae beat and vocal dubs. Also included is the single, "Love Me Still" (featuring Bruce Hornsby), from the Spike Lee movie, Clockers, and additionally featured on the Party Of Five television series soundtrack.

Epiphany: The Best of Chaka Khan Volume 1 is one of the best compilation albums so far in this recent storm of "greatest hits" albums, because this album features tracks that are all worthy of listening, plus adding new, quality material lets new listeners and especially die hard fans get more bang for their buck.

Music Wire

Whether with the groundbreaking group Rufus or on her own, Chaka Khan has one of the most distinctive and influential voices in R&B. She's able to wail at full emotive throttle or deliver a love song with nuanced jazz-inflected tones, and sometimes even do both within the same track. This 1996 collection gathers some of Khan's biggest and most beloved solo efforts. Included here are the classic tangy attack of "Ain't Nobody" and the turntable-enhanced smash "I Feel for You" (penned by admirer and recent collaborator Prince). There's also the anthemic original version of "I'm Every Woman," the moody "Through the Fire," and her 1996 collabo with Me'Shell Ndegeocello, "You Never Miss the Water." As all great vocalists do, Khan takes control of every song, breathing fire and life into the words and interpreting them without overpowering their meaning. One listen to Epiphany and it's abundantly clear that, even though she's been AWOL from the charts for a while, Chaka Khan remains a founding mother of soul and funk, armed with a potent voice that can both illuminate and elevate.

AIN'T NOBODY

Captured effortlessly
That's the way it was
Happened so naturally
I did not know it was love
The next thing I felt was
You holding me close
What was I gonna do?
I let myself go

And now we're flyin' through the star
I hope this night will last forever

I've been waitin' for you
It's been so long
I knew just what I would do
When I heard your song
Filled my heart with your bliss
Gave me freedom
You knew I could not resist
I needed someone

And now we're flyin' through the stars
I hope this night will last forever
Oh oh oh oh

CHORUS:
Ain't nobody
Loves me better
Makes me happy
Makes me feel this way
Ain't nobody
Loves me better than you

I wait for night time to come
And bring you to me
Can't believe I'm the one
I was so lonely
I feel like no one could feel
I must be dreamin'
I want this dream to be real
I need this feelin'

I make my wish upon a star
And hope this night will last forever

CHORUS

And first you put your arms around me
Then you put your charms around me
I can't resist this sweet surrender
Oh my nights are warm and tender
We stare into each other's eyes
And what we see is no surprise
Got a feeling most with treasure
And a love so deep we cannot measure

CHORUS

PAPILLON (aka HOT BUTTERFLY)

A faded photograph I mailed to you
With feelings I don't want to face
And a long song of surrender in blue
I remember when you took my breath away

CHORUS:

Chanson papillon, we were very young
Like butterflies, like hot butterfly
Chanson papillon, we had just begun
We let it slide on by
We didn't realize

All our memories are burning in time
Like a bittersweet perfume
Can you tell me how a love that's so fine
Could have climaxed in a single afternoon

Gone are the days of instant romance
And the nights of slow goodbyes
That was a time of life when foxy was the dance
But then you got wise to all my lies

CHORUS

Chanson papillon, chanson
Chanson papillon, chanson
Chanson papillon, chanson
Chanson papillon, chanson

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD

You ain't got no kind of feeling inside
I got something that'll sho nuff set yo' stuff on fire
You refuse to put anything before your pride
What I got will knock your pride aside

CHORUS:
Tell me something good
Tell me that you love me, yeah
Tell me something good
Tell me that you like it

Got no time is what you're known to say
(Got no time, no, got no time)
I'll make you wish there was 48 hours to each day
Your problem is you ain't been loved like you should
What I got to give will sho nuff do you good

I FEEL FOR YOU

MELLE MEL:
Chaka, Chaka, Chaka, Chaka Khan
Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan
Chaka Khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, Chaka Khan
Let me rock you, that's all I wanna do
Chaka Khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, Chaka Khan
Let me rock you, let me feel for you
Chaka Khan let me tell you what I wanna do
Do you feel for me, the way I feel for you
Chaka Khan let me tell you what I wanna do
I wanna love you, wanna hug you, wanna squeeze you too
Let me take you in my arms
Let me fill you with my charms, Chaka
'Cause you know that I'm the one to keep you warm
Chaka, I'll make you more than just a physical dream
I wanna rock you, Chaka
Baby, cause you make me wanna scream
Let me rock you, rock you

Baby, baby, when I look at you
I get a warm feeling inside
There's something about the things you do
That keeps me satisfied

I wouldn't lie to you, baby
It's mainly a physical thing
This feeling that i got for you, baby
Makes me wanna sing

CHORUS:
I feel for you
I think I love you
I feel for you
I think I love you

MELLE MEL:
Chaka Khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, Chaka Khan
Let me rock you, that's all I wanna do
Chaka Khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, Chaka Khan
Let me rock you, let me feel for you
Feel for you

Baby, baby, when I lay with you
There's no place I'd rather be
I can't believe, can't believe it's true
The things that you do to me

I wouldn't lie to you, baby
I'm physically attracted to you
This feeling that I got for you, baby
There's nothing that I wouldn't do

CHORUS

Yes sir, one more time
Say yeah
I feel for you (I think I love you)
I feel for you (I, I, I think I love you)

MELLE MEL:
Chaka Khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, Chaka Khan
Let me rock you, that's all I wanna do
Chaka Khan, let me rock you
Let me rock you, Chaka Khan
Let me rock you, let me feel for you
Chaka Khan won't you tell me what you wanna do
Do you feel for me, the way I feel for you
Chaka Khan let me tell you what I wanna do
I wanna love you, wanna hug you, wanna squeeze you too
Let me take you in my arms
Let me fill you with my charms, Chaka
'Cause you know that I'm the one to keep you warm
Chaka, I'll make you more than just a physical dream
I wanna rock you, Chaka
Baby, cause you make me wanna scream
Feel for you

I feel for you (Oooh, feel for you)
I feel it too (Oooh, feel for you)
I feel for you (Oooh, feel for you)

CHORUS

I KNOW YOU, I LIVE YOU

It's not difficult
For me to say I love you
It wouldn't be difficult
If you would say the same
And believe me when I tell you
That I know you very well
I know you like I know my name

I think that I have met you
Somewhere in my dreams
I may never have met you at all
And I know you must be thinking,
"What a silly girl"
I know your every thought and scheme

I wake up to the feeling each morning
I go to bed to it at night
I know you, I live you

CHORUS:
Like I feel a sun in the morning
Like I see the moon at night
I know you as if I've known you all my life
I know you, I live you

One day you'll realize
That we're not strangers
If you open up your eyes
You'll know me too
And see that we were
Meant to be together, my dear
And all the rest is up to you

BRIDGE

Like I feel a song in the morning
Like I see the moon at night
I know you as if I've known you all my life
I know you, I know you
Like I feel a song in the morning
Like I see the moon at night
I think I know you more than you know yourself
I know you, I live you
Know you, live you
Know you, live you
Know you

And without me you'd stumble
And without you I'd fall
Without each other we would not be at all

I'M EVERY WOMAN

CHORUS:
I'm every woman, it's all in me
Anything you want done, baby
I'll do it naturally
I'm every woman, it's all in me
I can read your thoughts right now
Every one from A to Z

I can cast a spell
With secrets you can't tell
Mix a special brew
Put fire inside of you
But anytime you feel
Danger or fear
Instantly I will appear, 'cause

CHORUS

I can sense your needs
Like rain on to the seeds
I can make a rhyme
Of confusion in your mind
And when it comes down
To some good old fashioned love
That's what I've got plenty of, 'cause

CHORUS

I ain't braggin' 'cause I'm the one
You just ask me ooh and it shall be done
And don't bother to compare
'Cause I've got it
I've got it, I've got it, yeah

I'm every woman (repeat and fade)

LOVE ME STILL

Here is my hand for you to hold
Here's the part of me they have not sold
I've wandered far, i've had my fill
I need you now, do you love me still

Only you have seen the hidden part of me
Call me foolhardy if you will
But i loved you when, do you love me still

So many smiles and lies surround me
Empty expectations, faceless fears
Sometimes this life is a bitter pill
I love you now, do you love me still

You have been mine since time untold
Our love is immortal, don't you know
Others will come, and they will go
But i loved you young, i love you old

Only you have seen, the other side of me
Call me naive, i think you will
But i loved you then, do you love me still

Here are the eyes that only see you
Here is the mouth that only calls your name
Here is the soul they can not kill
I love you now, do you love me still

THE END OF A LOVE AFFAIR

So I walk a little too fast and I drive a little too fast
And I'm reckless it's true, but what else can you do
At the end of a love affair?

So I talk a little too much and I laugh a little too much
And my voice is too loud when I'm out in a crowd
So that people are apt to stare

Do they know, do they care, that it's only that I'm lonely
And low as can be?
And the smile on my face isn't really a smile at all!

So I smoke a little too much and I drink a little too much
And the tunes I request aren't always the best
But the ones where the trumpets blare!

So I go at a maddening pace, and I pretend that it's taking your place
But what else can you do, at the end of a love affair?

So I smoke a little too much and I drink a little too much
And the tunes I request aren't always the best
But the ones where the trumpets blare!

So I go at a maddening pace, and I pretend that it's taking your place
But what else can you do, at the end of a love affair?

AND THE MELODY STILL LINGERS ON (NIGHT IN TUNISIA)

A long time ago in the 40's
Dizzy and Bird gave us this song
They called it "A Night In Tunisia"
And the melody still lingers on

It was new and very strange
Blew the squares right off the stage
Few could play along
But the melody still lingers on

Max and Miles to name just two
Together they grew
The music was young and strong
And the melody still lingers on

They paved the way for generations
From Coltrane to Stevie
No one could stop the winds of change
Without them where'd we be?

The Duke and the Prez were there before
The past you can't ignore
The torch is lit, we'll keep the flame
And the melody remains the same

In the 40's
A night in tunisia
In the 40's
A night in tunisia
In the 40's
A night in tunisia
In the 40's
A night in tunisia

THROUGH THE FIRE

I look in your eyes and I can see
We've loved so dangerously
You're not trusting your heart to anyone
You tell me you're gonna play it smart
We're through before we start
But I believe that we've only just begun

When it's this good, there's no saying no
I want you so, I'm ready to go

CHORUS:
Through the fire
To the limit, to the wall
For a chance to be with you
I'd gladly risk it all
Through the fire
Through whatever, come what may
For a chance at loving you
I'd take it all the way
Right down to the wire
Even through the fire

I know you're afraid of what you feel
You still need time to heal
And I can help if you'll only let me try
You touch me and something in me knew
What I could have with you
Well I'm not ready to kiss that dream goodbye

When it's this sweet, there's no saying no
I need you so, I'm ready to go

CHORUS

Through the test of time

CHORUS

Through the fire, to the limit
Through the fire, through whatever
Through the fire, to the limit
Through the fire, through whatever

WHAT CHA' GONNA DO FOR ME

All night and day
Just chippin' away
It's all in a day's work
Tryin' hard to defend
The time that I spend alone

The crown that you lose
Exploiting the blues
Won't get the job done
As hard as it bites
I'm keepin' my sights on you

CHORUS:
What cha' gonna do for me
What cha' gonna do for me
What cha' gonna do for me
When the chips are down

In the cool of the night
When nothing seems right
The feeling can take you
Strange as it seems
You make your own dreams come true

If you try to conceal
The way that you feel
You're asking for trouble
Just as sure as I cry
I'm keeping my eye on you

CHORUS (2x)

You don't have to tell me
I'm to blame for this
'Cause what you hold against me
Is what I miss

EVERYWHERE

Can you hear me calling
Out your name
You know I'm falling
And I don't know what to say

I'll speak a little louder
I'll even shout
You know that I'm proud
And I can't get the words out

Oh I, I want to be with you everywhere
Oh I, I want to be with you everywhere
Wanna be with you everywhere

Something's happening
Happening to me
My friends all say
I'm acting peculiarly

C'mon baby
We better make a start
You better do it soon
Before you break my heart

Oh I, I want to be with you everywhere
Oh I, I want to be with you everywhere
Wanna be with you everywhere

Can you hear me calling
Out your name
You know I'm falling
And I don't know what to say

Come along baby
We better make a start
You better do it soon
Before you break my heart

Oh I, I want to be with you everywhere
Oh I, I want to be with you everywhere
Oh I, I want to be with you everywhere
Oh I, I want to be with you everywhere
Wanna be with you everywhere

NEVER MISS THE WATER

All is fair in love boy
When the love is shared
Now you've been acting for some time
Like you just don't care
About me

Well my mama used to say
That there would come a day
When fools begin to open up their eyes...

Chorus:
You never miss the water
Till the well runs dry
Now I have had enough bad love
So I'm telling you goodbye, goodbye

You've been taking me for granted
You even made me cry
And sorry just ain't good enough
Baby not this time

My mama used to say
That there would come a day
When the truth can no longer be denied...

You're gonna miss my love
You're gonna miss my love
You're gonna miss my love

You never miss the water
Till the well runs dry for ya

My mama used to say
That there would come a day
When you would run but baby you can't hide...

SOMETHIN' DEEP

Why'd you have to take me there?
You start the fire, then you put it out
I have to depend on my imagination
I didn't want to fade what you've been puttin' down

But then you say the word
Then I go under

Every time you go
Missing you so
Somethin' deep
Baby come around
Missing you now
Somethin' deep
(Deeper, going deeper down without you honey)

It's more confusing by the hour
You set me free, but you don't go away
I try to think about somebody else
That's when I know I just can't help myself
So baby say the word and take me over

Every time you go
Missing you so
Somethin' deep
Baby come around
Missing you now
Somethin' deeply

YOUR LOVE IS ALL I KNOW

In my mind
I only see your face
And time will not erase
What I feel for you, I feel for you

In my heart
It was always you and me
That's how I thought it would be
Forever and ever

CHORUS:
Where do I go
What do I do
After all that we've been through
How do I turn around
Just turn around and watch you go
'Cause baby your love is all I know

The touch of your hand
The warmth of your embrace
I always had a place
Here in your arms
I felt so secure
I didn't need anything more

CHORUS

Tell me how
Can you walk away
and find somebody new, somebody new
somebody new
When I can't see myself
with anyone but you

EVERY LITTLE THING

CHORUS:
I'll take every little thing I do
And give it up, give it all up for you
I mean every little thing, it's true
Give it up, give it all up for you

Busy, I'm so busy
Climbing higher, moving further every day
Gotta keep going, don't you know it
Can't let sentimental feelings in the way

But there comes a time
When you want to share your heart
Give up everything
And just lose yourself in love

CHORUS

Keep up with the Joneses
If they got it then you need it right away
The grass ain't greener, you'll discover
When you're lonely it don't get better anywhere

'Cause there comes a time in my life
When I want to share my heart
Give up everything
And just lose myself in love

CHORUS

Giving you everything
About to give up everything
Giving you everything

Good timing is everything
And right now I'm here for you
I'll turn the lights down baby
And lock the door for you
