At the beginning of his career, Keb' Mo' appeared to be a clever update of the acoustic bluesman, one that managed to recall country-blues but offer a contemporary spin on tradition — sort of like a '90s version of Taj Mahal. With each new album, however, it became clear that authenticity was not a concept that troubled Keb' Mo'. He was more concerned with offering a nice, smooth bluesy pop that was perfect for the House of Blues, not for seedy roadhouse. That's not necessarily a bad thing — it's just the kind of thing that would irritate blues purists who may have placed hope in him in the first place. Slow Down, Mo's third album, will nevertheless be the kind of album that will please listeners who like laid-back, polished blues, not gritty Chicago or Delta blues. Approaching Slow Down with this knowledge is helpful, since it isn't a bad album — it's well-constructed and professionally performed, emphasizing Keb' Mo's ability to craft good, slick blues-rock. If you like that sound — the sound of post-Robert Cray blues, with no trace of Stevie Ray Vaughan pyrotechnics — Slow Down may be just your pace.

Keb' Mo's third album is a beautiful blend of Mississippi Blues and contemporary pop, the two styles he's gone back and forth between on his last two releases. His warm baritone, acoustic slide and downright addictive hooks make him one of blues pop's new masters. Having already earned a Grammy for 1996's Just Like You, Keb' improves on his trademark style with improved songwriting and a killer backing ensemble. His overwhelming charisma also goes a long way here, making his songs about cheating ("I Was Wrong") and dodging creditors ("Soon As I Get Paid") seem as innocuous as sugar in a candy factory.

ME/Sounds 10/98

Guitarist and vocalist Keb' Mo' seems to be continuing in the direction suggested by his previous album, Just Like You, with this release. That is to say, mixed in with the country-blues style that dominated his self-titled debut are elements of soul, R&B, and rock (the opening "Muddy Water" sounds, in Keb' Mo's hands, a great deal like the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman"). When this works, as it does on Slow Down's title track, it works very, very well. Some of the ballads, though, sound a little bland, and when the album returns to the tight, rock-inflected "Soon As I Get Paid" or the funky "A Letter to Tracy," it's refreshing. The real treats, however, come late in the album. With "Love in Vain" and "God Trying to Get Your Attention," Mo' gets down to the roots, and the sheer simplicity of the closing "I'm Telling You Now" is nothing short of beautiful, allowing Mo's considerable talent as a singer and guitarist to shine through.

Keb' Mo' succeeds on Slow Down because he is able to blend traditional acoustic blues with pop sensibilities. Both vocally and instrumentally he owes much to the groundbreaking work of Taj Mahal, although Mo's lyrics are often more introspective.

Living Blues

Was viele zeitgenössische Blues-Interpreten Kraftakte kostet, legt Keb' Mo' mit bewundernswerter Leichtigkeit hin.
