GRAMMY win in category "Best Contemporary Blues Album" in year 1996 - 39th Annual GRAMMY Awards

On his second album, Keb' Mo' begins to expand the borders of his Delta blues by recording with a full band on a couple of tracks and attempting more expansive, rock-based song structures. The attempts aren't entirely successful and it's ironic that he decided to try rock-oriented material after he received such praise for his traditionalist debut. Still, there are a few songs on the album that rank with the best on his first album, which suggests that Just Like You is merely a sophomore slump.

Keb' Mo's 1995 Grammy-winning eponymous debut firmly lodged the Los Angeles-born singer-guitarist in the contemporary blues pantheon. His sophomore effort, Just Like You, is slick in comparison to the virtuosic, bare-bones Keb' Mo', but it's nevertheless an irresistible and accomplished album. While songs such as "Perpetual Blues Machine" and "You Can Love Yourself" are classic Mo', with their canny lyrics and facile slide and acoustic guitar licks, the sapfest "Just Like You" (with guests Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne) and the clichéd "The Action" are hard to stomach. Toward the end of the disc, however, the gospel-laced "Hand It Over" and folksy "Momma, Where's My Daddy" restore the faith, displaying once again Mo's marvelous talent for wrenching the heartstrings with simply his voice and soulful steel-guitar manipulations.

Just Like You, the second solo release by bluesman KEB' MO' (a k a Kevin Moore), rarely sits still. Although he clearly has a firm grasp on rich blues tradition, he mixes it with a wide array of influences, including pop and R & B, for a sound that is hinged in the blues but has a distinct contemporary edge. Like his award-winning debut, Just Like You is produced by John Porter, and offers equal parts of Eric Clapton/Bonnie Raitt-style contemporary blues on cuts like "That's Not Love" and the title track (which features Raitt and Jackson Browne), and rootsy, acoustic blues songs that sound as if they were composed on a Southern back porch ("Perpetual Blues Machine" and "You Can Love Yourself"). Blues purists will probably find this a bit too watered down, while non-purists should find a happy medium. The CD also features a multimedia presentation.

Columbia's promotion of Kevin Moore makes him appear to be the reincarnation of Robert Johnson. That, most emphatically, he is not. What he is, however, is a fine songster who comfortably incorporates the blues in his repertoire.

Blues Access - October 10, 1996

No sophomore slump for bluesman Keb' Mo'. In Just Like You, his second album for Epic's revived blues imprint OKeh, this purveyor of the "happy blues" includes smooth jazz, R&B and gospel to produce an incandescent album. A long-time sideman for many blues and jazz greats in his native Los Angeles, Keb' Mo' (African American slang for Kevin Moore) struck out on his own in 1994 with a self-titled debut. The unassuming collection of life-affirming 12-bar blues songs has quietly and steadily become one of the best-selling blues albums of the 90s.

In recording Just Like You, Moore faced the challenge of any artist who produced a surprise hit with his or her debut. Few fans want an artist to create another album exactly like the first, and no one wants the music to change so radically that they can't understand or enjoy it. All of this has to be accomplished in about a year, yet the tunes on a debut may have been collected by the artist over decades.

Moore proves his talent and impeccable taste on Just Like You with 13 satisfying tunes that will please old fans and bring in new ones. The arrangements are complex but soothing. The production -- again handled by John Porter (Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, Roxy Music) -- intelligently blends the soul stylings of Bobby Womack, the jazzy panache of George Benson and the rugged gospel of the Staple Singers with Moore's own optimism and straightforward songwriting.

It doesn't hurt that Moore is working this time around with a high-caliber crew of session musicians, including Bonnie Raitt's bassist, James "Hutch" Hutchinson. Raitt herself, along with Jackson Browne, provide additional vocals for the title track, a tender plea for tolerance among races and genders.

But working with the stars hasn't gone to Moore's head. There are still plenty of simple blues songs here, including "Perpetual Blues Machine," "I'm On Your Side," "Standin' at the Station," and the terrific "You Can Love Yourself," in which a rejected, downtrodden narrator proclaims "But if nobody loves you / And you feel like dust on an empty shelf / Just remember / You can love yourself."

Blues fans will be stunned by Moore's cover of Robert Johnson's "Last Fair Deal Gone Down," which includes dobro and horns. Moore modestly says that the original suggested this arrangement to him, but his new home of New Orleans and his innate musical talent probably had as much to do with this compelling, unique version.

R&B/jazz tunes include the first single, "That's Not Love," the romantic "The Action," and the moving "More Than One Way Home," in which Moore lovingly recalls the moral and emotional strength of his boyhood neighbors in Compton. It's a fine antidote to the narrow vision of the place presented by gangsta rappers.

In the optimism, class and intelligence departments, it doesn't get much better than Keb' Mo's Just Like You.

THAT'S NOT LOVE

It ain't you
No it ain't me
That's not the way
Love's supposed to be

And it's just no good
No it ain't right
For you to be sitting all alone
Crying every night

You're down on your knees
Scared he's gonna leave
But if you really wanna know
You're gonna have to let go

´Cause that's not love
Love don't feel that bad
That's not love
It don't feel that sad
No that's not love
'Cause you don't feel good inside
I don't know what it is
But that's not love

Inside your heart
It's always raining
And you're oh so tired
Tired of your own complaining

This is for real
It ain't no game
You can't measure your love
By the depths of your pain

PERPETUAL BLUES MACHINE

You had style, you had class
You had everything to make a love last
You had grace, you had charm
You had me hanging on your arm
When I found out you were a fake
You rared up and bit me like a snake
And I was ready to let go
And let all my feelings show

(Chorus:)
Tell me why you wanna be so cold
Why you wanna be so mean
You've gone and let your true colors show
You're a perpetual blues machine

We could have been just fine
If you'd have only been all mine
'Cause I was for real, but you did not know
That you were steppin' on my heart
As you were walkin' out the door
But now I know who you are
And it's a damn good thing we didn't get too far
'Cause I'm not the one that's right for you

You need a man to do your rolling
Like what you want him to do

(Chorus)

Now you've gone, and I'm glad
That we didn't let it go too bad
You know I tried to make it go
But there was just no way to tell u so

(Chorus)

MORE THAN ONE WAY HOME

Daddy came around every once in awhile
But momma, she was there all the time
And summertime in Compton
Was not like TV
But we were right there
Where we needed to be
And the Thurmond boys
On peach street
With only their dad
So proud of themselves
And that old Pontiac they had
And miss brooks her bible
And her three little boys
At the double rock
Baptist church
Makin' a joyful noise

(Chorus:)
Well there's more than
One way home
Ain't no right way
Ain't no wrong
And whatever road you
Might be on
You find your own way
'Cause there's more than
One way home

Got me a job at the grocery store
Workin' weekdays after
School from 5 to 9
Tommy, John and Charlie were
The neighborhood stars

With their midsize homes,
And their big fancy cars
And when the eagle flied on Friday
I'd go out and play
Wastin' time with Otis
Out on the dock of the bay
And my ticket to adventure
Was a ride on the bus
Different places,
Different faces
But they were just like us

(Chorus 2x)

I'M ON YOUR SIDE

Get with me baby
I'm on your side
Get with me baby
I'm on your side

Well there's a change
In the weather
Change of time
But I'm a stubborn man
I won't change my mind
Get with me baby
I'm on your side

Talk to me baby
I'm on your side
Talk with me baby
I'm on your side

I don't wanna argue
Sure don't wanna fight
Just tell me what's wrong
And let me make it alright
Get with me baby
I'm on your side

I´ll be your sugar daddy
Just call on me
I´ll be your vigilante
If that's what you need baby
What I need to be girl

Get with me baby
I'm on your side
Get with me baby
I'm on your side

Now I don't wanna own you
Like a private property
Come on baby
Just be nice to me
Get with me baby
I'm on your side

Get with me baby
I'm on your side

JUST LIKE YOU

Hello my old friend
It's been awhile
All our old clothes
Are back in style
We went our separate ways,
Only to return
To face a lesson
We failed to learn

We didn't understand the truth
We were blinded by the eyes of youth
But time kept on moving
And a change has come
You think that I don't know
Where you're coming from

(Chorus:)
'Cause I feel just like you
And I cry just like you
But I heal just like you
And under my skin
I'm just like you

You gave your love and your innocence
And they took away your confidence
Well I'm not those women
I'm not those men
Put your arms around me
I am your friend

(Chorus)

(Bridge:)
You and everybody else
When I get hurt
I cry for help
And I've got secrets
That god only knows
And god knows I feel...

(Chorus)

YOU CAN LOVE YOURSELF

My baby she wrote me a letter
She didn't call me on the phone
Five little words was all she wrote
See ya later I'm gone

She had no explanation
About why she had to go
Well I can't take a joke,
But I can take a hint
She don't love me no more

(Chorus:)
But if nobody loves you
And you feel like dust
On an empty shelve
Just remember
You can love yourself

My mother says
She loves me
But you know
She could be jivin' too
And everybody's always criticizing
Everything that I do

I work 9 to 5, do the best I can
Try to please the boss
I bought a big ol' house,
And a brand new car
And then he laid me off

(Chorus)

Everytime I meet a lady
I wanna try to get to know
Either I'm too small
Or she's too tall
She's rich and I'm po'
So I called my old friend
Hazel Mae
Asked her out for a little date
She said: “I'm married now
And I got three little kids,
Boy ya just a little too late“

(Chorus 2x)

DANGEROUS MOOD

Look out baby
I'm in a dangerous mood
I done called up the bossman
Told him where to go
And just what to do

Call me crazy
But i did what I had to do
You can call me stupid
I just did what I had to do
I had to steal a little time baby
So I could spend it all on you
I parked the car down the street
And I unplugged the phone
So it would look just like
Ain't nobody home
I put a rose on your pillow
Where you lay your pretty head
I'm gonna rub your tired shoulders
Bring your dinner to your bed

Look out baby
I'm in a dangerous mood
I had to steal a little time baby
So I could spend it all on you

I'm gonna light a candle
Put the champagne on ice
And if one ain't enough
Well we'll just have to do it twice
I done made myself a will
And I've called my next of kin
'Cause I'm gonna love you over
And over and over
Again and again

Look out baby
I'm in a dangerous mood
I had to steal a little time baby
So I could spend it all on you

Look out baby
I'm in a dangerous mood
Look out baby
I'm in a dangerous mood
I just this one last paycheck baby
And I'm gonna spend every dime on you

THE ACTION

Remember when we first met
I was so excited just to get to know you
Oh baby just to know you
I was just a little bit shy
God willing I was ready
To try to show you
Oh just to show you

I felt a little funny
But it was really no joke
I wanted to prove my love
In every word that I spoke

(Chorus:)
But the action
Speaks louder
You know the action
Speaks louder than
The word
The action,
Louder than the word

I loved you just the way you were
Somehow I had to find the nerve to tell you
Oh baby just to tell you
So I did what a man must do
I walked right over to you
And I was asking
Baby, lets go dancing

I felt a little guilty
But I had committed no crime
I wanted to love you
Love you and love you
For a long time

(Chorus)

(Bridge:)
I can't wait until I'm holding you
And there's no doubt in your mind
You're the one and only one for me
Only one for me

I'm gonna prove my love no matter how long that it takes
The feelings I have for you they're no mistake

(Chorus)

HAND IT OVER

If your problems
Won't go away
And you're worried
Both night and day
Hand it over
Get on your knees and pray

If you're sick
Feeling low
Got no money
Got nowhere to go
Hand it over
Get on your knees and pray

(Chorus:)
Hand it over
Hand it over
Give it up, give it over
Hand it over
Get on your knees and pray

(Bridge:)
Ain't no mountain
You cant climb
Ain't no answer
You can't find
All you need is a hand to hold
I´ll heal your body
And feed your soul

If the road is dark
And you can`t find your way
Just let the spirit light the way
Hand it over
Get on your knees and pray

(Chorus)

(Bridge)

(Chorus)

STANDIN' AT THE STATION

Standin' at the station
Teardrops in my eyes
Standin' at the station
Wonderin' why
You love him more than you love me
You wanna marry him
Make a family
That's why I'm standin' at the station
Teardrops in my eyes

Well I'm standin' at the station
Sad as a man can be
And you're gazing through the window
Waving good-bye to me
Well I know you got to do what you got to do
But you're leaving me
And I'm loving you
That's why I'm standin' at the station
Teardrops in my eyes
Yes I'm standin' at the station
Teardrops in my eyes
Come back home baby, I need ya
Stop that train, back it on up

MOMMA, WHERE'S MY DADDY

Oh momma, where's my daddy
Why don't he ever come around
Momma, where's my daddy
Is he nowhere to be found

Momma, where's my daddy
Can we call him on the phone
Does he ever think about us
Or does he have a heart of stone

Momma what's the matter
Why's there water in your eyes
Do you need him as much as I do
I love you momma, please don't cry

Where does he come from
What does he look like
Does he have a face like mine
Is he ever comin back here
And why'd he leave us all behind

Momma when did you and daddy get married
Was it in 19 and 83
“Son, your daddy and I were married
But he just wasn't married to me“

Oh momma, where's my daddy
Why don't he ever come around
Momma, where's my daddy
Is he nowhere to be found

LULLABY BABY BLUES

Lullaby baby blues
Time to kick off your walkin' shoes
And hug the pillow on your bed
And lay down your sleepy head

Hear the ticking of the clock
Stars that twinkle, stars that shine
Dream and you'll have wings

Goodnight baby blues
Close your eyes baby blues
The moonlit sky watches over you
So close your eyes baby blues

Time to kick off your walkin' shoes
And hug the pillow on your bed
And lay down your sleepy head

Goodnight baby blues
Close your eyes baby blues
The moonlit sky watches over you
Close your eyes baby blues
