This is Berlin-based Paul Kalkbrenner's fourth full-length CD on the BPitch Control label, featuring re-workings of his earlier 12" tracks by Wighnomy Brothers, Sascha Funke, Agoria, Ellen Allien & Apparat, Joris Voorn, Alexander Kowalski, Modeselektor and Michael Mayer. ReWorks is a very special project that Paul has been planning for a long time. He asked some of his friends, whom he also very much appreciates musically, for remixes. Paul opened his treasure box so everyone could pick the track he/she likes most and play around with it. The result is a wonderful remix album that not only gives a new touch to some of Kalkbrenner's greatest tracks, but was fun work for the experienced remixers. Wighnomy Brothers introduce us to the record smoothly, but in an exciting way. They crafted their version of "Steinbeisser" without any beats and only concentrated on pure sound. Sascha Funke's "Miles Away" gets down to business right away -- striking beats and a sing-along melody of a reverb synth that, towards the end, builds up to an upbeat peak. The first half of Agoria's remix of "Page 1, 2, 3" is a beat that lays itself upon you hypnotically, and the second half shows off with a great accordion line from the original. The wake-up call comes from Ellen Allien & Apparat. First melodic, swinging beats jump around happily, then break, facet and beat again, in unison with the melody. Joris Voorn's version of "Press On" is a blend of thrilling anticipation and impatience. Alexander Kowalski focuses on a straight and pushing beat of a dry bass drum with a nice reverbed vocal sample. Modeselektor sound like a techno marching band with their version of "Gia 2000," and Michael Mayer is the whispering fade-out. One chord only is enough to set free all those happy happy-hormones that make you dance to the stereo and start this CD all over again!

Although being one of BPitch Control’s oldest members and most productive, err, producer, Paul Kalkbrenner always kept a low profile, never reaching the iconic status of label’s boss Ellen Allien or the relative success of label mates such as Smash TV, Sascha Funke or Tok Tok (their ‘Missy Queen’s Gonna Die’ with Soffy O. has got to be the label’s most instantly recognizable track, and one of electroclash’s sole highlights). After three albums for the Berlin-based label (‘Superimpose’, ‘Zeit’, and ‘Self’, all released between 2001 and 2004), Kalkbrenner is now back with ‘Reworks’, a collection of, well, reworks of some of his well-known or more obscure tracks. And, strangely enough, this could be his most coherent album to date.

Actually, it is the sequencing of the different remixes that makes all the difference. Compared to some other remixes compilations (Depeche Mode’s one from 2004 comes to mind), this one doesn’t feel like an unfortunate blend of disparate aesthetics. Opener ‘Steinbeisser (Wighnomy Brothers Remix)’ may be all about floating synths in a beatless sea, but it perfectly blends into Sascha Funke’s minimal and highly melodic reinterpretation of ‘Miles Away’. Kalkbrenner’s best track, ‘Gebrünn Gebrünn’, also makes a welcomed apparition, here as the Alexander Kowalksi version, who actually turns it into a pounding, technoïd monster. Only the dub version of ‘Gia 2000’ by Modeselektor is slowing down the overall mood, but Michael Mayer’s reform of ‘Feature Me’, with its elegiac pads, brings the entire package back on track.

As an introduction to Kalkbrenner’s oeuvre, or as a Who’s Who of the contemporary Berlin scene, you couldn’t find a better piece of work.

Der Berliner Techno-Produzent Paul Kalkbrenner hat eine Reihe befreundeter Künstler und Musiker gebeten, sich einen Track aus dem bisher veröffentlichten Kalkbrenner-Œuvre herauszusuchen und zu remixen. Statt einem neuem Studio-Album kommt mit "ReWorks" eben eine Remix-Platte, auf der die Wighnomy Brothers, Agoria, Joris Voorn, Alexander Kowalski, Michael Mayer sowie die Bpitch-Labelkollegen Sascha Funke, Modeselektor, Ellen Allien und Apparat ihre neu bearbeiteten Lieblingstracks von Kalkbrenner vorstellen.

Die Wighnomy Brothers überraschen zunächst mit ihrer Version von "Steinbeisser": dieser kommt ohne einen Beat aus, dazu verpassen sie dem Track eine atmosphärisch dichte Soundlandschaft, bei der dezentes Trillerpfeifen zu vernehmen ist. Kein schlechter Start schon mal. Sascha Funke geht bei "Miles Away" dagegen vergleichsweise nüchtern-trocken vor, mit einer schmeichelnden Melodie, die im Duell mit einer abgedrehten Synthieline um die Aufmerksamkeit buhlt. Gerade dieses zwischenzeitliche Wechselspiel macht den Reiz dieses Stückes aus.

Der Franzose Sébastien Devaud alias Agoria pickte sich "Page 1, 2, 3" vom Album "Self" – lag es an den französisch anmutenden Akkordeon-Klängen des Originals? Wer weiß, jedenfalls kommt die Agoria-Fassung dieses Tracks erst einmal als Hypno-Beatklöppeln daher, bis sich besagtes Akkordeon Gehör und Platz verschafft und das Ganze in die Ferne geleitet. Sehr schön. Ebenfalls von "Self" entnommen ist "Queer Fellow", das durch Ellen Allien und ihrem Kompagnon Apparat munter vor sich hin bounct und später, von Flächen getragen, zu einer treibenden Angelegenheit ausartet.

Die Joris Voorn-Bearbeitung von "Press On" spannt vorderhand fast schon penetrant auf die Folter, sein von Detroit inspirierter Track mit markant schnipsender Hi-hat hat zugleich reichlich Trance-Versatzstücke in sich: Break, Steigerung, Fläche, ab die Post. Das Warten lohnt sich dennoch. Alexander Kowalski macht "Gebrünn Gebrünn" zu einem Großraum-Rave-Monster, bei dem ich mir nicht so ganz klar bin, was ich davon halten soll. Modeselektors "Gia 2000" legt mit Trommelwirbel uffda uffda los, bleibt mehr oder minder dabei, ein paar Töne noch dazu und gut is. Na ja.

"Feature Me" in der Version von Michael Mayer hat etwas Düsteres an sich und erinnert an den Kompaktschen Techno früherer Tage. Eine massive Bassdrum macht das Tempo. Zusammen mit einem schlichten Akkord aus simplen Klängen ergibt das ein minimalistisch geprägtes Finale von "ReWorks". Kalkbrenners eigener Mix von "Der Berserker" vervollständigt dieses illustre Line-up, dieser war auf der Promo-CD allerdings nicht vorhanden.
