The Big Picture finds Elton John in strong form, turning in a by-now-predictable collection of ballads and pop songs designed to appeal to the adult contemporary audience. The difference is inspiration. With Made in England, John and his collaborator Bernie Taupin showed signs of life, and they continue that winning streak here. There may be nothing new on The Big Picture, but it's well-crafted professional pop, demonstrating John's knack for catchy pop hooks and his way with a ballad. As with any latter-day John album, hits like "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" are balanced out by some filler, but the key to the album is how album tracks like "Recover Your Soul," "If the River Can Bend" and "The Big Picutre" carry emotional and melodic weight. It's a solid effort from one of pop's most reliable artists.

Was waren das noch für Zeiten, als uns der kleine Pianist mit den bunten Brillen als "Rocket Man" in die höchsten Sphären des Pop zu entführen wußte oder das fruchtbare Teamwork mit Texter Bernie Taupin Song-Perlen wie auf "Captain Fantastic ..." schuf. Auf seinem 35. Album plätschern die zehn Songs des einstmals genialen Barden aus Britannien top arrangiert aber uninspiriert vor sich hin. Der Imagewandel ist längst perfekt: vom Glamour-Boy wandelte sich der heute 50jährige Elton John zum seriösen Pop-Gentleman. Musikalisch hatte der Herzensbrecher-König diesen Wechsel nie nötig. Denn selbst in den Tagen, als der Top-Entertainer im Federkostüm auftrat und eine Brille mit batteriebetriebenen Scheibenwischern auf der Nase trug, glänzte er mit pointiert pumpendem Rock sowie makellos gemeißelten Edelballaden. An der Versschmiedekunst von Eltons Studiopartner Bernie Taupin lobt das Magazin "Time" die "cinematographischen Bilder". Vielleicht hat das Traum-Team deshalb das neue Album "The Big Picture" getauft. Gibt es da auch Parallelen zum Kino? Ja, leider: dieser musikalische "Mammut-Film" ist ein waschechter Breitwandschinken in Hollywood-Manier: technisch perfekt, so routiniert wie seelenlos und mit Melodien, deren Wiedererkennungswert für Elton-John-Verhältnisse meist enttäuscht (Ausnahmen: "Long Way From Happiness", "(Live Like) Horses", "Recover Your Soul"). Unterm Strich fehlt "The Big Picture" die Dynmaik von "The One" (1992), es ist weniger abwechslungsreich als die "Duets" (1993), lange nicht so knackig wie "Made In England" (1995) - und meilenweit entfernt von Meilensteinen wie "Too Low For Zero" (1983, mit "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues"). ** M: 6-7

...yet another grand portrait of the artist as a not-so-young but still wildly gifted man....a sort of CinemaScope orchestral pop that could easily grown overblown in lesser hands....full of lush songs with memorable melodies...
