Released Sept.’79. Recorded in London and at Ian Anderson’s home in Scotland, this marked the last time Jethro Tull’s seventh line-up worked together. When bassist John Glascock became gravely ill at the end of the first leg of the ‘Heavy Horses’ tour, he was replaced by Tony Williams (an old friend of the band). Glascock rejoined as the sessions for this album began. But when he became ill again, group leader Ian Anderson finished recording the bass parts. John Glascock died a short time later.
Bassist Dave Pegg (of Fairport Convention) completed Tull’s eighth line-up for the follwing tour, after which, Barlow left the band and Anderson began to work on a solo album.
Selling over half a million copies, ‘Stormwatch’ peaked at No.27 in the UK and No.22 in the US.

Stormwatch marked the end of an era in Jethro Tull's history, as the last album on which longtime members Barriemore Barlow, John Evan, and David Palmer participated, and the final appearance of bassist John Glascock, who played on three of the cuts ( Anderson supplied the bass elsewhere) and died following open-heart surgery a few weeks after its release. Anderson's inspiration seemed to be running out here, his writing covering environmental concerns ("North Sea Oil") and very scattershot social topical criticism ("Dark Ages"). The fire is still there in some of the hard rock passages, especially on "Dark Ages, but most of the songs generally lack the craftsmanship and inspiration of such albums as Minstrel in the Gallery or Heavy Horses,much less Aqualung. Just when "Something's on the Move" seems like it could be the most tuneless track in Tull's history, "Old Ghosts" and "Dun Ringill" follow it with even less memorable melodic material. The latter, in particular, proved that Anderson's well of folk-inspired tunes was also running dry, apart from the instrumental "Warm Sporran."

Dark Ages

as the white dot flickers and is gone

where slick tycoons and rich buffoons
have opened up the seam
of golden nights and champagne flights
ad-man overkill
and in the haze
consumer crazed
we take the sugar pill.
Jagged fires mark the picket lines
the politicians weep
and mealy-mouthed
through corridors of power on tip-toe creep.
Come and see bureaucracy
make its final heave
and let the new disorder through
while senses take their leave.
Families screaming line the streets
and put the windows through
in corner shops
where keepers kept
the country's life-blood blue.

and try the trick
with loaves and fishes shared
and the vicar shouts
as the lights go out,
and no-one really cares.

She wore a black tiara

Old Ghosts

Hair stands high on the cat's back like
a ridge of threatening hills.
Sheepdogs howl, make tracks and growl -
their tails hanging low.
And young children falter in their games
at the altar of life's hide-and-seek
between tall pillars, where Sunday-night killers
in grey raincoats peek.
Misty colours unfold a backcloth cold -
fine tapestry of silk
I draw around me like a cloak
and soundless glide a-drifting
on eddies whirled in beech leaves furled -
brown and gold they fly
in the warm mesh of sunlight
sifting now from a cloudless sky.
