Jean-Michel Jarre has composed and recorded a 52 minute musical score for ‘Amazônia’, a new project by award winning photographer and filmmaker Sebastião Salgado, for the Philharmonic Paris. The exhibition launches on April 7th and will later travel to South America, Roma and London…

‘Amazônia’ is an immersive exhibition focussing on the Brazilian Amazon, featuring more than 200 photographs and other media by Salgado. He travelled the region for six years, capturing the forest, the rivers, the mountains and the people who live there, and most of the work will be seen publicly for the first time. At the heart of the exhibit is an invitation to see, hear and think about the future of biodiversity and the place of humans in the living world.
JMJs accompanying sound-creation is a symphonic world which will engulf visitors to the exhibit in the sounds of the forest. Using a blend of electronic and orchestral instruments with other real-life natural sounds, the score has also been recorded in binaural audio, for a truly immersive experience.

I wanted to avoid the ethnomusicological approach, or creating background music. So I conceived a sort of toolbox containing musical elements - orchestral and electronic - intended to recreate or evoke the timbre of natural sounds, to which I added sounds from the environment, and finally ethnic sources (voices, songs, and instruments) from the sound archives of the Ethnography Museum of Geneva (MEG). I approached the Amazon with respect, in a poetic and impressionistic way. I chose the vocal and sound elements in their evocative dimension, rather than trying to be faithful to a particular ethnic group. It seemed interesting to me to fantasise the forest. It carries with it a powerful imagination; for both Westerners and Amerindians. This music also evokes a form of nomadism, as if sounds appear and disappear during a migration. It was necessary to go back to the principles of orchestration of the sounds of nature, to work from sounds which follow one another randomly, but which can compose a harmony or a dissonance. And as in any symphony, the work has moments of clarity or tension.

2021 release. Amazonia is a music project with renowned, award-winning photographer Sebastiao Salgado about the Amazonian Forest. The exhibition is commissioned for the Philharmonic Paris, starting on 7th April 2021, with 52 minutes of music composed by Jean-Michel Jarre, especially to accompany the photos. The exhibition will then travel to other cities across the globe, including Rome, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and London. The London exhibition will be in the Science Museum, at a later date in 2021, while more cities will follow in 2022. Mit Auftragsarbeiten ist das ja so eine Sache. Ist man eng genug mit dem Sujet verbunden, um eine künstlerische Vision adäquat zu gestalten? Der preisgekrönte brasilianische Fotograf und Umweltaktivist Sebastiao Salgado reiste sechs Jahre lang durch das Amazonas-Gebiet. Das Ergebnis dieser Reise ist seit dem 7. April 2021 in der Pariser Philharmonie zu sehen, bevor sie auf Wanderschaft durch die Metropolen gehen soll - die Ausstellung umfasst 200 Bilder.

Den Soundtrack zu eben dieser Ausstellung erschuf Jean Michel Jarre. In 52 Minuten stellt der immer noch frische Franzosen seine Kompositionskunst völlig in den Dienst seines Auftraggebers. Man hört immer wieder an gewissen Signature-Sounds heraus, wer hier am Werke ist, aber sämtliche Klänge und Effekte untermalen das große Vorhaben, den Amazonas klanglich darzustellen.

Die große Gefahr, sich weltmusikalischem Kitsch hinzugeben, umschifft Jarre, indem er sich mit Wissenschaftlern des Ethnografischen Museums in Genf zusammensetzte. Seine Vision des Amazonas' klingt in erster Linie wie ein unfassbar schön dahin fließendes Ambient-Album, in dem nur dezent sanfte Beats erklingen. Der Meister des Elektro-Kitsches streicht die überbordende Opulenz, die seine Werke mitunter auszeichnet, fast völlig aus seinem Repertoire. Field-Recordings, Töne aus indigenen Musikinstrumenten, Sprachsamples und Gesang erweitern das Klangspektrum. Man hat nie das Gefühl, man lausche hier einem aufgesetzten Konzept.

Knisterndes Feuer - ein wiederkehrendes Thema im Jarre-Kosmos - Insektengezirpe, Wasserrauschen und Vogelgezwitscher vermählt er mit seinen Elektro-Klängen zu einer faszinierenden Reise. In dieser Qualität und Intensität ist man das eigentlich nur von Ambient-Großmeister Geir Jensen aka Biosphere gewohnt. "Amazonia" fügt der Diskografie des Franzosen eine weitere Facette hinzu, die man in dieser Art nicht erwarten konnte.

Jean Michel Jarres musikalisches Gemälde des Amazonas' ist von prächtigen Farben gekennzeichnet. Er konzentriert sich darauf, die Schönheit dieses Fleckens Erde darzustellen. Zwar erklingen mitunter auch disruptive Klänge und Distort-Geräusche, aber Hauptsächlich lebt das neunteilige Album von einer durchgehend organischen und harmonischen Stimmung. Dass es im Regenwald auch ganz schön gefährlich zugehen kann und die Bedrohung des Biotops durch den Menschen bildet er nicht ab. Aber man kann auch nicht alles haben.

Ja, das mit Auftragsarbeiten ist so eine Sache. Jarre setzt sich schon seit Jahrzehnten für den Umweltschutz ein und wurde 1993 von der Unseco ausgezeichnet. Insofern haben sich die Macher hinter dem Projekt genau den Richtigen ausgesucht. Kritikpunkte? Niente, sprach die Ente! Chapeau!

Amazônia is the twenty-first studio album by French musician and composer Jean-Michel Jarre, released on 9 April 2021 by Columbia Records.

The album serves as the 52-minute musical score for the exhibition Amazônia, a project by photographer and filmmaker Sebastião Salgado presented from May to October 2021 in the Paris Philharmonic complex. Jarre had access to the Museum of Ethnology in the city of Geneva, Switzerland.

The exhibition focuses on the Brazilian Amazon, featuring more than 200 photographs and other media by Salgado. In this album, a combination of electronic and orchestral instruments was made, natural sounds were also used. As well as a standard stereo version released on CD and LP, a binaural version and a 5.1 surround sound version were made available in digital download.

A remark in the CD booklet/on the LP cover states that a part of the royalties will be returned to the Indigenous communities where the recordings were made. It is however unclear how this will be achieved.
