Hurricane Ruth LaMaster has gone back to her roots with her new EP, Winds of Change. Ruth’s father was a musician who introduced her to many types of music. Big band was the sound that Ruth was always drawn to: “We used to listen to Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald, and they always had swingin’ bands.” Hurricane Ruth LaMaster is a highly skilled vocalist, and Winds of Change features a few of her favorite tunes. She wanted it to reflect the big band sound that she has always loved. Here are few words to explain why she chose each song:

1. I Feel Lucky (Giraldo/Grombacher - 5:18) – Swingin’ tune that I love to sing! It has a great vibe, and it’s done by a performer who was only seen as a “rocker”.

2. Built for Comfort (Willie Dixon – 3:37) – It’s one of my favorite Willie Dixon tunes, and considering his catalog, that says it all!

3. When a Man Loves a Woman (Lewis/Wright – 4:41) – Percy Sledge’s version of this song is the epitome of the soulful Muscle Shoals sound to me.

4. Going Back to Louisiana (McClinton – 2:54) – All out fun tune that transports me to Bourbon Street in New Orleans! I can’t help but have fun singing this great song!

“I feel the winds of change. They stir my soul. It’s often in the winds of change that we find our direction. This change of musical direction for me means a return to my roots. It’s a homecoming to the sound and style of blues and soul that I’ve always loved. Change is good, and it feels like home.” – Hurricane Ruth LaMaster
