1976 LP EMI - MFP 6009

In 1976, someone decided to release an LP of Hot Chocolate’s greatest hits. You have to admire their ambition – most people can only name two Hot Chocolate tracks (and that’s before being reminded that ‘You Sexy Thing’ and ‘I Believe in Miracles’ are actually the same song.) Fortunately for the creator of the record (if not for the listening public), by 1976 Hot Chocolate had released eighteen singles and fourteen of them had reached the charts.

Optimistically promoted by EMI as ‘music for pleasure’, this LP contains all fourteen of Hot Chocolate’s charting singles. In some cases, the definition of ‘Greatest Hits’ has been stretched to breaking point – I don’t know how many singles were released in July 1973, but it must have been several hundred if ‘Rumours’ chart position of 44 was considered a success.

The vinyl is in excellent condition with no scratches. The cover has some minor damage in one corner. It features a picture of Errol and the band, although, if I didn’t know better, I would think that the guy on the left had been photoshopped in as a joke. Perhaps he was just passing by and jumped into frame at the last minute. He certainly seems very happy to be there.

Hot Chocolate’s career didn’t end with this ‘14 Greatest Hits’ compilation. They continued releasing successful songs at such a rate that, by 1979, they were able to release a new package called ’20 Hottest Hits’. Apparently, releasing compilation albums is something of an addiction for the band – since recording their last studio LP in 1983, Hot Chocolate have produced seven further Greatest Hits albums, the most recent of which came out just this year.
