Breathe

In just six years, Faith Hill has sold more than 11 million records, garnered eight No. 1 singles and ten No. 1 videos. This past year alone, she received countless nominations and statues from the Country Music Association, the Grammy Awards, the Academy of Country Music Awards, Blockbuster Awards and TNN Music City News Awards. She celebrated the enormous crossover success of her first platinum single, "This Kiss," which culminated with her appearance on the 1999 VH1 Divas Live, where she shared the same stage with Tina Turner, Cher and Whitney Houston. She was named the newest face for Cover Girl Cosmetics and graced the cover of numerous magazines as diverse as Country Weekly, People, TV Guide and Glamour. After completing a 50-city tour-her first headline series of performances-she found herself back in the studio with barely six weeks to finish Breathe, the follow-up to the now quadruple-platinum 1998 release, Faith.

"This past year has been a complete whirlwind," explains Hill. "I haven't had time to take a breath. But I was on a creative high, I already had a few songs that I had recorded, and if you can believe it, I felt that the time was right to make another record."

Breathe, a musically diverse and soulful recording produced by Hill and Faith producers Byron Gallimore and Dann Huff, is remarkably close to an autobiographical collection of 13 tracks. The album focuses on the things closest to her heart and her selection of tracks is sure to give listeners a personal look at what makes this remarkable talent tick. "The music that I make has to be right for me at the right time," says Hill. "It has to have meaning. When I sing a song, I am in that song…and hopefully people hear and feel that. I can't draw that line of trust with my fans if I don't sing from my heart every time I'm in front of a microphone."

From the title track, which mirrors Hill's professional juggernaut, to the energetic "I Got My Baby" and powerful "If My Heart Had Wings," Hill sings with attitude, vision and purpose on Breathe. Her fourth recording takes the listener on a journey that ranges from the passionate ballad "Let's Make Love" (a duet with country superstar and husband Tim McGraw), to the uplifting spirit and sincere message of "There Will Come A Day." Hill even finds a place to pay tribute to her fans, with "Bringing Out The Elvis," and to Bruce Springsteen, with a stirring rendition of "If I Should Fall Behind."

"It was the first time I ever cried while in the studio," said Hill. "I couldn't have made this album and not recorded 'If I Should Fall Behind.' After seeing and meeting Bruce at one of his shows, that song took on a special meaning for me. The lyrical content is devastating and the message just hits you in your soul."

Hill's desire to perform and record songs close to her heart set her on a path to explore new musical and emotional territories. This innate drive is what stands at the core of this chanteuse's success. "I reached a certain place last year, a certain level of success, and now its time to go to another place," explains Hill. "In order to succeed you can't be afraid to fail. I consider Breathe a mixture of musical styles that reflects my love for country, pop, gospel and rhythm and blues. Yes, I decided to take some chances here musically-as an artist that is who I am. I've always tried to achieve and to do better."

But Hill hasn't forgotten the bottom line. "There's got to be something for the fans to connect to in order for them to go out and spend their hard-earned money on a Faith Hill recording," says Hill. "I'm constantly thinking about them. I hope they realize that and like the direction that I am going."

With her breakout success this past year, Hill has found herself in a unique position. Those country fans who have purchased her records for the past five years no longer find themselves alone. Hill has been introduced to the industry's proverbial mainstream. With a new contingency of fans who might not otherwise have known about her if not for the huge success of "This Kiss," her appearance on VH1's Divas Live and her new nationwide print and television campaign as Cover Girl Cosmetics' newest face, Hill finds herself releasing a new recording for a new audience for the second time.

"I just need to stay true to who I am," Hill says confidently. "I could never just go out and make a pop record or, for that matter, a traditional country album. I can only do what seems natural for me, what is real to me. I just hope that in the end it works. I hope that I can create something, along with my producers and musicians, that will work across the board. As many people as I can reach with my music, I think that's every musician's goal."

And how has the 32-year-old Mississippi-born Hill learned to deal with motherhood, marriage and her newfound super-stardom? "The biggest issue for me now is how to take it all in," says Hill. "It's a challenge. I'm just learning how to take time for myself. Frankly, the thing that I want most out of life is normality. It's difficult, but I try to find time for myself. It's a daily struggle, certainly not a daily accomplishment."

But you can count on one thing. Whether or not Faith Hill finds time to "breathe," she will always stay true to those things that got her here: dedication, passion, focus and her commitment to keeping la vie en rose or life in the pink - Faith's favorite Edith Piaf expression - for herself, her fans and those close to her.

"Everything is going great," says Hill. "Each day I try to get as much out life as I can-to keep it real, sincere and very honest. Hopefully, people can get that from my music. And if I'm lucky, one day there will be a little spot carved away somewhere that says I made a contribution."

Being married to a sexy country superstar and mom to two little baby girls, along with her sultry new image and a huge crossover hit have all changed not only the way Faith Hill sounds, but also the things she sings about. There's no more spousal abuse, heartbreak, or letting go as heard on all three of her previous albums. On Breathe, Hill sings of love, making love, kissing, and simply love (In fact, five of the albums 13 tracks have love in the title), and it works for her. Country music fans might be a bit disappointed that there's very little about this album that sounds country, but Faith Hill fans will never feel an ounce of disappointment over this outstanding album. With each release, Hill's voice gets more and more confident and producers Byron Gallimore and Dann Huff (in addition to herself) utilize that confidence by choosing songs that complement her vocal strengths. And of course, what's a Faith Hill album about love without a duet with husband Tim McGraw? Fans won't be able to take a breath from this album — at least not on the first listen.

From the suggestive series of photos in the CD's packaging to the aerobicized dance-floor workouts within, Faith Hill refuses to concede an inch of crossover dominance to Shania Twain. Except for a seductive duet with husband Tim McGraw on "Let's Make Love" and an occasional pinch of fiddle or steel guitar, there's little here to characterize Hill as a country artist. As pop, the results range from pretty ("Breathe," "Love Is a Sweet Thing") to pretty slight ("I Got My Baby," "If My Heart Had Wings") to borderline inane ("Bringing Out the Elvis," the voyeuristic twist of "The Way You Love Me"). Though Hill's version of Bruce Springsteen's "If I Should Fall Behind" is admirably understated, too much of the album substitutes surface dazzle for emotional depth.

If you were one of the anxious fans who ran out and bought Faith Hill's new album, Breathe, you were not alone. In fact, there were over 242,000 of you that helped break the all-time first-week sales record for a female country artist.

The CD is beautifully packaged with some absolutely stunning photography of Hill in alluring, figure-flattering outfits. Certainly the packaging alone rang up many sales. The thousands who scurried to buy Hill's new album, no doubt, were looking for a repeat of her landmark Faith album that received enthusiastic support from pop radio for such hits as "This Kiss" and "Let Me Let Go."

While Breathe has certainly hopped the fence toward the pop pastures, that would come as no disappointment to her thousands of fans who rushed out to be the first to own a copy. With each new album, Hill has grown vocally and stylistically, and that willingness to stretch her talents is what has gained her thousands more country and pop fans.

Breathe finds Hill treading new ground with deep, bluesy vocals fleshed out with more pop material. Is there another infectious "This Kiss"? Well, sort of. "The Way You Love Me" is catchy and fun with an original spin on a lover's wish for another. It will certainly be a single and the kind of hit song that will play over and over again inside your head.

The title cut and first single, "Breathe," showcases Hill's soaring, emotive vocals beautifully. It will probably be the "Let Me Let Go" of this new album with pop and country radio already all over it.

Listeners have pointed out that the melody of "Breathe," especially the chorus, sounds identical to her 1995 hit "It Matters to Me." No doubt, fans will debate this over and over. However, even if the songs are eerily similar, listen to them both, and "Breathe" clearly shows just how far Hill has come in developing vocal and emotional depth in her delivery.

Another standout on Breathe includes "Let's Make Love." This is a scorching hot, true duet with superstar husband Tim McGraw. Their voices blend perfectly on this torrid power ballad, and fans of both Hill and McGraw are going to love it.

Breathe is indeed a musically diverse, soulful album with some creative production touches that tread new ground for Hill. The shining star from Mississippi has hit the mainstream and chosen a musical road that is tried and true Hill. As Hill continues to grow along her creative path, her vocals seem to get stronger, deeper, and more powerful in delivery. Vocally, Hill is right on target in Breathe, but the album overall could use more melodically alluring and memorable standouts.

From Jim Reeves to Johnny Cash to Shania Twain, Top 40 has embraced country artists for decades - twang and pop have long been kissin' cousins. But it was still a jaw-dropper when Faith Hill's fourth album debuted at No. 1 last week, making her the second country-based female singer of the '90s to rule the roost (surprise: the first was LeAnn, not Shania). She's come a long way, baby. Five years ago, on the cover of Take Me As I Am, Hill was a barefoot naif. Breathe's booklet finds her tastefully baring nearly everything - a modern businesswoman quite savvy about saucy personas. And the sound echoes the look. Her 1998 cross-over smash "This Kiss" should have given plenty of warning: the modest sass of earlier tracks like "Wild One" and "Piece of My Heart" has most assuredly been left behind. Breathe's baker's dozen of hopelessly-devoted-to-you love songs, highlighted by the title track and a nice reading of Bruce Springsteen's "If I Should Fall Behind," all but glistens with a pop sheen. Though "steel guitar" and "fiddle" are credited on nearly every track, you have to strain to hear 'em (and indeed they're abandoned altogether on the radio mixes). Simply put, a new vocabulary is in place. When she started her career, Hill's role model was Reba MacEntyre. Now she's veering into Cher 'n' Celine territory. It's not exactly a bad move, and it has at least one advantage: when it comes time for Divas Live 2000, she'll be ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with the stars.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME

Thought we had a good thing baby
You pulled the wool over my eyes
Should've seen it coming baby
Now all I see is a cool love dying
Honey I don't want to hold you down
Why you gotta own the lock and the key
Oh tell me baby
Good things just don't come around
And you can't have them for free
No not me
You've been a river of give
And an ocean of take
Darlin' for heaven's sake

You've got me up and down and in between
Acting nice then being real mean
Hey
Well you hold me tight then you turn your back
Who could deal with that
You say you want to work it out, boy
Tell me what's in it for me

You're living in your own world
You act like I'm just passing through
Oh yeah
Don't you want to be happy
Don't you know how good I could be
Seems everybody's telling you something
That they know you just want to hear
Oh but you ain't gonna hear it from me
You've been a valley of love
And a mountain of need
Baby, it's time you see

You've got me up and down and in between
Acting nice then being real mean
Hey
Well you hold me tight then you turn your back
Who could deal with that
You say you want to work it out, boy
Tell me what's in it for me

Up and down and in between
Acting nice then being real mean
Well you hold me tight then you turn your back
Who could deal with that
You say you want to work it out boy
Tell me what's in it for me

You've been a river of give and a mountain of take
Darlin’ for Heaven's sake

You've got me up and down and in between
Acting nice then being real mean
Hey
Well you hold me tight then you turn your back
Who could deal with that
You say you want to work it out, boy
Tell me what's in it for me

Up and down and in between
Acting nice then being real mean
Hey
Well you hold me tight then you turn your back
Who could deal with that
You say you want to work it out boy
Tell me what's in it for me
Oh, in it for me
What's in it for me
What's in it for me

I GOT MY BABY

Diggin’ around
Feelin’ so down
Floatin’ around like a feather
Nothin’ but me
And all of my dreams
Trying to hold it together
Those were long days
Long days indeed
Could not avoid
I felt no joy
No relief

Everyone knows when that's how it goes it's usually bound to get better
So when you arrived
I looked in your eyes and all I could see was forever
What a fine day
A fine day indeed
When you showed up I fell in love now look at me

I got my baby
I got those good times
Don't lack no sunshine
Baby I got you

Darlin' I find you're blowin' my mind every time that I hold you
Better than gold the deeper we go nobody knows it like I do
These are sweet days
Sweet days indeed
A love that flows will always grow
Now can't you see

I got my baby
I got those good times
Don't lack no sunshine
Baby I got you

Red hot and no blues
Got no more bad news
I got my baby
Baby, I got you

And on and on
Oh what a love affair
And on and on
Oh, I will always be there
Yeah
Oh baby

I got my baby
I got those good times
Don't lack no sunshine
Baby I got you

Red hot and no blues
Got no more bad news
I got my baby
Baby, I got you

I got my baby
I got those good times
Don't lack no sunshine
Baby I got you

Yes, I do
Red hot and no blues
Got no more bad news

LOVE IS A SWEET THING

He was sitting on a corner with a bottle of beer
And the same shopping cart he'd been pushing for years
A big smile on his face
Like the first day of spring
All the people looked the other way, but they heard him sing
And he sang

"Love
Love is a sweet thing"
He sang "love
Love is a sweet thing"

She shot out of Texas
Like a bullet from a gun
With a van full of hippies and a band on the run
She didn't want to be famous
She just wanted to play
In old dive bars and pool halls she got up on stage
And she sang

"Love
Love is a sweet thing
Oh yes it is"
She sang "love
Love is a sweet, sweet thing"

It’s everywhere you look
If you look hard enough
Its really not hard to see
Yeah, once you put your arms around it
You can never get too much
Love is a sweet, sweet thing

It's in the smile of a stranger
In the eyes of a child
On the corner of a crowded street
Its everywhere around us
Its always growing wild
Love is a sweet, sweet thing

Love
Love is a sweet thing
I sang "love, love, love
Love is a sweet thing
Love
Love is a sweet thing
Oh yes it is"

I sang "love, love, love
Love is a sweet, sweet thing
Oh, baby
Love
Love is a sweet thing"
I sang "love
Love is a sweet, sweet thing"

BREATHE

I can feel the magic floating in the air
Being with you gets me that way
I watch the sunlight dance across your face and I've
Never been this swept away

All my thoughts seem to settle on the breeze
When I'm lying wrapped up in your arms
The whole world just fades away
The only thing I hear
Is the beating of your heart

‘Cause I can feel you breathe
It's washing over me
Suddenly I'm melting into you
There's nothing left to prove
Baby all we need is just to be
Caught up in the touch
The slow and steady rush
Baby, isn't that the way that love's supposed to be
I can feel you breathe
Just breathe

In a way I know my heart is waking up
As all the walls come tumbling down
I’m closer than I've ever felt before
And I know
And you know
There's no need for words right now

‘Cause I can feel you breathe
It's washing over me
Suddenly I'm melting into you
There's nothing left to prove
Baby all we need is just to be
Caught up in the touch
The slow and steady rush
Baby, isn't that the way that love's supposed to be
I can feel you breathe
Just breathe

Caught up in the touch
The slow and steady rush
Baby, isn't that the way that love's supposed to be
I can feel you breathe
Just breathe

I can feel the magic floating in the air
Being with you gets me that way

LET'S MAKE LOVE

Baby I've been drifting away
Dreaming all day
Of holdng you
Touching you
The only thing I want to do
Is be with you
As close to you
As I can be

Let's make love
All night long
Until all our strength is gone
Hold on tight
Just let go
I want to feel you in my soul
Until the sun comes up
Let's make love
Oh, baby

Do you know what you do to me
Everything inside of me
Is wanting you
And needing you
I'm so in love with you
Look in my eyes
Let’s get lost tonight
In each other

Let's make love
All night long
Until all our strength is gone
Hold on tight
Just let go
I want to feel you in my soul
Until the sun comes up
Let's make love

Let's make love
All night long
Until all our strength is gone
Hold on tight
Just let go
I want to feel you in my soul
Until the sun comes up
Oh, until the sun comes up
Let's make love

Oh baby, let's make love
All night long
All night long
Let’s make love

IT WILL BE ME

When you start falling
Who's gonna catch ya
I'm willing to bet ya
It will be me
Who's gonna love ya
Like there's no other
Search and discover
It will be me

When all the others
Have gone and hurt you
Who won't desert you
It will be me
Weighing the options
So much to think of
But when you think love
It will be me

You may not see it now
Love is strange that way
Someday somewhere baby somehow

When you've been broken
And dreams don't oblige ya
Who's that beside ya
Oh, it will be me

You may not see it now
Love is strange that way
Someday somewhere baby somehow

Who'll be your only
True romancer
You know the answer
It will be me

What will it take to
Bring you to your senses
And finally convince you
It will be me

THE WAY YOU LOVE ME

If I could grant
You one wish
I'd wish you could see the way you kiss
Ooh, I love watching you
Baby
When you're driving me crazy

Ooh, I love the way you
Love the way you love me
There's nowhere else I'd rather be
Ooh, to feel the way I feel with your arms around me
I only wish that you could see the way you love me
The way you love me

It’s not right
It’s not fair
What you're missing over there
Someday I'll find a way to show you
Just how lucky I am to know you

Ooh, I love the way you
Love the way you love me
There's nowhere else I'd rather be
Ooh, to feel the way I feel with your arms around me
I only wish that you could see the way you love me
The way you love me

You're the million reasons why
There's love reflecting in my eyes

Ooh, I love the way you
Love the way you love me
There's nowhere else I'd rather be
Ooh, to feel the way I feel with your arms around me
I only wish that you could see the way you love me
The way you love me
The way you love me

Ooh, the way you love me
The way you love me

IF I'M NOT IN LOVE

If I'm not in love with you
What is this I'm going through
Tonight
And if my heart is lying then
What should I believe in
Why do I go crazy
Every time I think about you, baby
Why else do I want you like I do
If I'm not in love with you

And if I don't need your touch
Why do I miss you so much
Tonight
If it’s just infatuation then
Why is my heart aching
To hold you forever
Give a part of me I thought I’d never
Give again to someone I could lose
If I'm not in love with you

Why in every fantasy
Do I feel your arms embracing me
Lovers lost in sweet desire
Why in dreams do I surrender
Lying with you baby
Someone help explain this feeling
Someone tell me

If I'm not in love with you
What is this I'm going through
Tonight
And if my heart is lying then what should I believe in
Why do I go crazy
Every time I think about you baby
Why else do I want you like I do
If I'm not in love with you

BRINGING OUT THE ELVIS

You're bringing out the Elvis in me
You're bringing out the Elvis in me

Just like a fossil
Frozen in time I could not move
My heart, my soul, my feet
Then you unearthed me
And put me in a hot pulsating groove
Now I'm a slave to the beat

You're bringing out the Elvis in me
Making my hips want to swing
You bring out the Elvis in me
Making me burst out and sing

When I'm with you
I never have to feel like a sardine
In a little metal can
I'm more like a wild shark
That travels in a pink limosuine, yeah
Yeah, together with my fans

You're bringing out the Elvis in me
Making my hips want to swing
You bring out the Elvis in me
Making me burst out and sing, oh yeah

People think I'm a silly fool
Because I think you are so nice and cool
And some people say
You're so square
But I don't care
You're bringing out the Elvis in me
You're bringing out the Elvis in me

You're bringing out the Elvis in me
Making my hips want to swing
You bring out the Elvis in me
Making me burst out and sing
You're bringing out the Elvis in me

IF MY HEART HAD WINGS

Damn these old wheels
Rolling too slow
I stare down this white line
With so far to go
Headlights keep coming
Loneliness humming along
Who poured this rain
Who made these clouds
I stare through this windshield
Thinking out loud
Time keeps on crawling
Love keeps on calling me home
I'd jump all these mountains and take to the skies
Sail through the heavens with stars in my eyes

If my heart had wings
I would fly to you and lie
Beside you as you dream
If my heart had wings

We both committed
We both agreed
You do what you have to to get what you need
Feeling you near me with so many miles in between
Lord, it ain't easy out here in the dark
To keep us together so far apart

If my heart had wings
I would fly to you and lie
Beside you as you dream
If my heart had wings

Stuck on this circle
Spinning around
Cut loose from this rope
That's tying me down

If my heart had wings
I would fly to you and lie
Beside you as you dream
If my
If my heart had wings
I would fly to you and lie
Beside you as you dream
If my heart had wings

IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND

We said we'd walk together
Baby come what may
Back from the twilight
Should we lose our way
As we were walking
A hand should slip free
I'll wait for you
Should I fall behind wait for me

Swore we'd travel together
Darlin’ side by side
We'd help each other
Stay in stride
Each lover steps on
So differently
So I'll wait for you
Should I fall behind wait for me

Everyone dreams of
A love lasting and true
You and I know what this world can do
So let's make ourselves be
That the other may see
And I'll wait for you
Should I fall behind wait for me

There's a beautiful river
In the valley ahead
There need be no drought
Soon we will wed
Should we lose each other
In the shadow of the evening dreams
Oh, I'll wait for you
Should I fall behind wait for me
Darlin’ I'll wait for you
Should I fall behind wait for me

Wait for me
If I should fall behind wait for me
Wait for me

THAT'S HOW LOVE MOVES

It's such a mystery
How you found something in me
That I never knew was there
But you uncovered it so easily
You turn me like the season
And I began to change
You wrapped your arms around me
Now I'll never be the same

That's how love works
That's how love moves
Like a river running through you
Sometimes it lifts you high as Heaven
It consumes you
That's a given
That's how love moves

I've seen walls that could never be broken
Come tumbling down
I've heard the voice of love calling
Without making a sound
See I was touched by an angel
The day you took my hand
You know that you're the miracle
That makes me everything I am

That's how love works
That's how love moves
Like a river running through you
Sometimes it lifts you
As high as Heaven
It consumes you
That's a given
That's how love moves

Sometimes it's a whisper
Sometimes it's a storm
Sometimes it reaches forever
With it’s everlasting arm

That's how love works
That's how love moves
Like a river running through you
Sometimes it lifts you
As high as Heaven
It consumes you

That's how love works
That's how love moves
Like a river running through you
Sometimes it lifts you
As high as Heaven
It consumes you
Oh, that's a given
That's how love moves
Baby, yeah
High as Heaven
That’s how love moves
As high as Heaven

THERE WILL COME A DAY

It's not easy
Trying to understand
How the world can be so cold
Stealing the souls of man
Cloudy skies rain down
On all your dreams
You wrestle with the fear and doubt
Sometimes it's hard, but you gotta believe

There's a better place
Where our Father waits
And every tear
He'll wipe away
The darkness will be gone
The weak shall be strong
Hold on to your faith
There will come a day
There will come a day

Wars are raging
Lives are scattered
Innocence is lost
And hopes are shattered
The old are forgotten
The children are forsaken
In this world we're living in
Isn't anything sacred

There's a better place
Where our Father waits
And every tear
He'll wipe away
The darkness will be gone
The weak shall be strong
Hold on to your faith
There will come a day
There will come a day

Song will ring out
Down those golden streets
The voices of earth
The angels will sing
Every knee will bow
Sin will have no trace
In the glory of His amazing grace
Every knee will bow
Sin will have no trace
In the glory of His amazing grace
There will come a day
There will come a day
Oh, there will come a day
There will come a day
I know there's coming a day
Coming a day
