Recorded from July 9, 1967 to August 22, 1970.

Although a slew of posthumous scrapings from the Hendrix catalogue have cluttered the market in the past, SOUTH SATURN DELTA is a thoroughly researched collection that is anythingbut slap-dash. The detailed liner notes document the fascinating creative processes this virtuoso went through in his native element: the studio. Enlightening moments abound, suchas an early instrumental version of "Little Wing" that has the basic rhythmic structure of "Angel", which is also represented as a demo entitled "Sweet Angel" featuring Hendrix onall instruments.
This disc also provides insight into the different musical roads Hendrix's muse led him down. John Lee Hooker and Lightnin' Hopkins's influences can be felt inHendrix's solo take on "Midnight Lightning". The title track demonstrates an attempt to integrate horns into his sound, reflecting an unrealised desire to eventually head in more of a jazz direction.

Shortly after the Hendrix family reacquired the rights to Jimi's catalog, they signed a long-term deal with MCA Records and pulled many of the compilations of unreleased material and rarities off the shelves, with the intent of re-releasing the material in better collections. First Rays of the New Rising Sun, an attempt at assembling Hendrix's uncompleted last album, was the first release from Experience Hendrix LLC, and it was followed months later by South Saturn Delta, a collection of rarities - all but one of the 15 tracks were never officially released in the U.S. - that spans his entire career. Its intent is to capture the full range of Hendrix's music through an alternate history, and it works pretty well. Among the highlights are tracks from the War Heroes and Rainbow Bridge Concert albums ("Look Over Yonder," "Tax Free," "Midnight," "Pali Gap," "Bleeding Heart"), "Sweet Angel" (an early version of "Angel"), an instrumental "Little Wing," a solo take on "Midnight Lightning," and a studio version of "Message to the Universe (Message to Love)." There are also alternate mixes of "All Along the Watchtower," "Power of Soul," "Drifter's Escape," "South Saturn Delta," and "The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice." It's an intelligently sequenced, listenable collection of some of the very best outtakes and rarities from Hendrix, and is another sign that Experience Hendrix LLC's restoration of Jimi's catalog will be smart, stylish, and logical.

** Musik.: 02-05 ** Klang.: 02-04

"...a career-spanning assortment of nifty arcana. Although a few tracks have appeared elsewhere, DELTA holds enough unexpected delights...to make the average Jimi freak kiss the sky." - Rating: A-

Entertainment Weekly (10/10/97, p.93)

After his unfortunate death in 1970, Jimi Hendrix's posthumous career underwent a cosmic turnaround that few could have predicted. Although compilation after compilation poured out, the impact of his legacy actually waned for many years. The first blow to his heritage was when Eddie Kramer went in and remixed numerous unfinished Hendrix tapes in the early 1970s. These, although they added valuable pieces to the puzzle, unfortunately sounded very dated, reflecting the jiving crassness of the early `70s (a trebly mix with a track selection that emphasized the wildness of Hendrix's playing, often at the expense of its beauty and subtlety). Then came several controversial albums (Midnight Lightning, Crash Landing) which featured Hendrix tracks with other musicians overdubbed on top. Albums like Cosmic Turnaround were then released, that were almost unlistenable, with mere minutes of brilliance standing out amidst hours of tapes. Song titles were arbitrarily changed, great jam sessions were edited down, even and this is the real puzzler -brilliant Hendrix solos were cut out of performances before being commercially released. Then, in the late `80s, Rykodisc scored a breakthrough release, Live At Winterland, featuring a previously-unrelease soundboard tape of the Hendrix Experience in full flight. In one of its final acts as custodian of the Hendrix empire, Reprise then released the historic box set Stages, featuring four complete live shows. Now, with the Hendrix estate reorganized under the Experience Hendrix label through MCA, it's time for his posthumous studio material to be given the same regal treatment, which it gets on South Saturn Delta, the second compilation of archival Hendrix material in two years. Delta features several intriguing Hendrix moments, such as the brilliant 1967 stroke-of-genius B-side, "Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice." If you listen carefully over the wildly flailing fadeout, you'll hear Hendrix giving us a sonic tour of the galaxy on board his spaceship, "the Milky Way Express." "If you look to the left, you'll see Mars...No throwing cigarette butts out the window... There you'll see the Milky Way, bring your cornflakes and stuff," he quips. "Hey, don't open that door! Don`t open that door!"

Oh, the temptation - to just say that "Kettle Whistle" blows, that it's the alt-rock answer to Led Zeppelin's "Coda." But if these outtakes from one of the shortest, brightest careers in post-punk rock aren't all diamonds, they are solid evidence that even in their formative days (the "Mountain Song" and "Ocean Size" demos, the early club-gig cuts), Jane's Addiction were onto something, a visionary bent on art-metal violence and millennial sensuality. The live material from '90 and '91 shows that Jane's broke up too soon, while the two new studio tracks with substitute bassist Flea hint at newer, greater things - without quite delivering.

Jimi Hendrix completed just three studio albums in his lifetime. The guitarist's death, in September 1970, and the prolonged manhandling of his legacy mean that the bulk of his life's work - demos, live tapes, unfinished recordings - has been treated shabbily over the decades: cherry-picked for compilations, deleted, reissued, re-reissued with every change in stewardship. "South Saturn Delta" is less of a mess than its predecessors, combining tracks from "Rainbow Bridge," "Loose Ends" and "War Heroes" with previously unissued material that is revealing, although not always in the way the compilers intend. The instrumental sketch of "Little Wing" and the early mix of "All Along the Watchtower" prove that there was magic as well as mania in Hendrix's obsessive studio ways. But "Sweet Angel" (a '67 demo of "Angel") and "Midnight Lightning," cut solo as a Venusian-delt

LITTLE WING

Well she's walking, through the clouds
With a circus mind that's running wild
Butterflies and zebras
And moonbeams, and fairy tales
That's all she ever thinks about
Riding with the wind

When I'm sad she comes to me
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free
It's all right she said, it's all right
Take anything you want from me
Anything

Fly on Little Wing
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Little Wing

ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER

"There must be some kinda way out of here"
Said a joker to the thief
"There's too much confusion,
I can't get no relief.
Businessmen they, they drink my wine,
Ploughmen dig my earth
None will level on the line
Nobody of it is worth"

"No reason to get excited"
The thief he kindly spoke.
"There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I we've been through that
And this is not our fate.
So let us not talk falsely now,
The hour's getting late"

All along the watchtower,
Princess kept the view
While all the women came and went,
Barefoot servants too.
Outside in the cold distance
A wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching
And the wind began to howl

The Star Spangled Banner

Oh, say can you see
By the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hail'd
At the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars
Through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watched
Were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare!
The bombs bursting in air!
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave?

MIDNIGHT

Instrumental.

SWEET ANGEL (ANGEL)

Angel came down from heaven yesterday
She stayed with me just long enough to rescue me
And she told me a story yesterday
About the sweet love between the moon and the deep blue sea
And then she spread her wings high over me
She said she's gonna come back tomorrow

And I said "Fly on, my sweet angel,
Fly on through the sky
Fly on, my sweet angel
Tomorrow I'm gonna be by your side"

Sure enough, this morning came up to me
Silver wing silhouette against a child's sunrise
And my angel, she said unto me
"Today is the day for you to rise
Take my hand, you're gonna be my man, you're gonna rise"
And then she take me high over yonder

And I said "Fly on, my sweet angel,
Fly on through the sky
Fly on, my sweet angel
Forever I will be by your side"

BLEEDING HEART

PEOPLE, PEOPLE
HERE ME GO
YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO BE LEFT ALONE
YEAH, PEOPLE HEAR ME PEOPLE
DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO BE LEFT ALONE?
NOT EVEN A LOVE TO CALL YOUR OWN
A LITTLE UNDERSTANDIN'
LORD THAT'S ALL IN THE WORLD I NEED
UNDERSTANDIN' AND A LITTLE BIT OF LOVIN' BABY
THAT'S ALL IN THE WORLD I NEED
A MISUNDERSTANDING OF A NO GOOD WOMAN
YEAH, LORD THEY'VE BOTH CAUSED MY HEART TO BLEED
YEAH

EVERY MORNIN'
I CAN HEAR OUT OF MY WINDOW
THE BLUES COME WINNING
I CAN HEAR THE BLUES CALL MY NAME BABY
EVERY MORNIN'
EVERY MORNIN'
YOU CAN HEAR THE WILLOWS WEEP AND MOWN FOR ME
LORD NOW, EVERY MORNIN' YOU CAN HEAR THE WILLOWS WEEP AND MOWN FOR ME
MY LITTLE GIRL HAS LEFT ME
THAT'S WHAT CAUSED MY HEART TO BLEED
THAT'S ALL THAT CAUSED MY HEART TO BLEED
BLEEDING HEART
LORD THAT'S TOO BAD I HAVE A BLEEDING HEART
PLEASE COME BACK HOME TO ME BABY

Pali Gap

Instrumental.

DRIFTER'S ESCAPE

OH, HELP ME IN MY WEAKNESS
I HEARD THE DRIFTER SAY
AS THEY CARRIED HIM FROM THE COURT ROOM
AND WERE TAKING HIM AWAY
WELL, MY TRIP HASN'T BEEN A PLEASANT ONE
AND MY TIME IT ISN'T LONG
AND I STILL DO NOT KNOW
WHAT IS WAS THAT I'VE DONE WRONG

WELL THE JUDGE HE CAST HIS ROBE ASIDE
A TEAR CAME TO HIS EYE
WELL YOU FAIL TO UNDERSTAND, HE SAID
WHY MUST YOU EVEN TRY
OUTSIDE THE CROWD WAS STIRRING
YOU COULD HEAR IT FROM THE DOOR
INSIDE THE JUDGE WAS STEPPING DOWN
WHILE THE JURY CRIED FOR MORE, MORE, MORE
CRIED FOR MORE, CRIED FOR MORE

HEY YOU BETTER LEAVE THAT BOY'S SOUL ALONE

OH STOP THAT PASSING THE JURY
GRAB ME A TENDON AND ME A NURSE
OH, THE TRIAL WAS BAD ENOUGH
YES, BUT THIS IS TEN TIMES WORSE
JUST THEN BOLT OF LIGHTNING
SHOWED THE COURT HOUSE OUT OF SHAPE
AND WHILE EVERYBODY KNELT TO PRAY
THE DRIFTER MADE HIS ESCAPE
THE DRIFTER DID HIS ESCAPE
YEAH
SO LONG

MIDNIGHT LIGHTNING

MIDNIGHT LIGHTNING
FLASHING ALL AROUND ME
LORD, SEE IT FLASHIN' ALL AROUND THE TREES
SEE IT FLASHIN' ON MY LOVE AND ME
WAKE UP MY SWEET DARLIN'
AND SEE THE LIGHT UPON YOUR EYES
BLUE LIGHT FLASHIN'
SHADOW'S LEAPIN' CHURCH BELLS RING MADE AGAINST THE NIGHT
HEY MY LOVE PLEASE STAND UP AND WATCH ME
MIDNIGHT LIGHTNING FLASHIN'
FLASHIN' ALL AROUND MY COUNTRY HOUSE
THUNDER FLASHIN'
SEE WHERE THE FIELDS LIE ON OUR TREE IN OUR LITTLE DREAM
