1994 CD Columbia - COL 477242 2

Greatest Hits is a best of album by the French Rumba Catalana band Gipsy Kings, which was released in 1994 in Europe. More than a simple compilation of previous albums, it also includes the 1992 single "Pida Me La", a studio release of "Galaxia", "Allegria" and "La Dona" (previously released live on Allegria), a more energetic release of "Vamos a Bailar" from the LP version and the popular party Medley (consisting of a mix of Bamboleo, Volare, Djobi Djoba, Pida Me La and Baila Me]. The Japanese edition of this album includes an extra track, "Este Mundo" (from the album Este Mundo) as track #18 (the "Medley" is track #19). A similar compilation, The Best of the Gipsy Kings, was released a year later in the U.S.; it has a different song order and replaces "Pida Me La", "A Mi Manera", "Tu Quieres Volver", "Soy", "La Quiero" and "Allegria" with "Viento Del Arena", "Quiero Saber", "Montaña", "Trista Pena", "Love & Liberté" and the previously unreleased "A Tu Vera". Also, while "La Dona" and "Galaxia" on the Greatest Hits album are the studio versions, the ones on The Best of the Gipsy Kings are live versions. The song "Escucha Me" is also slightly different.

Whenever I see "Greatest Hits" type albums, I wonder how much input the artists themselves have over the track selection. Sometimes I guess the answer is "not much." This Gipsy Kings compilation, however, is a good representation of the band's repertoire. Gipsy Kings Greatest Hits includes a similar track listing as Best of the Gipsy Kings, including the same medley available on the U.S. release. Several changes have been made, however, including the versions of Escucha Me and La Quiero different than those available in the States, and Pida me La, which is totally unavailable in the U.S. Much to my irritation, Greatest Hits contains both Volaré and A Mi Manera, which, while decent covers, don't in my opinion represent the Gipsy Kings' true potential and have no business on an album of this style, although you won't catch me saying so in print. Why the powers that be decided to release both Greatest Hits and Best of the Gipsy Kings is beyond me, but for the record I prefer Best of the Gipsy Kings. Regardless, Greatest Hits is a good compilation, especially because it contains several tracks not otherwise available in America.

After ten years of playing in the streets, at weddings, and in restaurants, the Gipsy Kings were swept away in a feast of commercial and critical success in the late '80s. By the late '90s, they had sold over 15 million albums worldwide and become one of the best-selling all-Spanish language acts in U.S. history. Their Greatest Hits collection, released in 1998, aptly reflects the time-perfected technique and soulful delivery that allowed them to transcend ethnic and age differences as few bands have. The introductory sequence of songs simply explodes out of the blocks. If consecutive hip-shakers "Djobi, Djoba," "Baila Me," "Bamboleo," "Pida Me La," "Bem, Bem, Maria," and "Volare" don't have you at least tapping your feet, someone ought to take your pulse. The tempo relaxes modestly in the middle section, with slower but equally moving love songs such as "Tu Quieres Volver" and "Mi Manera." The album finishes with a fluid medley of their most popular material. Wisely, seven of the album's 18 tracks were taken from the Gipsy Kings' 1988 self-titled debut, including "Bamboleo," "Djobi, Djoba," and "Moorea." However, it isn't easy to date their music, as most of it was written long before they had recorded in the studio. "Dona" and "Amor" are on a number of their earlier recordings, in addition to appearing on this compilation. Their seven-guitar version of the Migliacci Brothers' classic "Volare," a necessary addition for any greatest hits package, injects vigor and vitality into a song with dour lounge act connotations. If any fault is to be found with this collection, it might be the underrepresentation of the Love & Liberte album. But another, more complete double-CD greatest hits compilation (The Very Best of the Gipsy Kings) does exist for hardcore fans. This Greatest Hits album, accessible from start to finish, serves as an excellent introduction for just about any kind of music lover.
