Peter Frampton. Not a teenager in the 70s didn't own a copy of his Frampton Comes Alive, the best-selling live album of all time. Just the name Frampton alone is legendary, as his career has spanned three, going on four decades.

Starting in the sixties with the Herd, then rising to fame with Humble Pie, and finally attaining a wildly successful solo career in the mid-70s, Peter Frampton is still coming alive in the 90s. His most recent projects include a performance with the British Rock Symphony in New York City, two tours with Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band, an appearance on VH-1's Hard Rock Live series, his 1998 tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd, an appearance on the Simpsons as himself, and two songs he recorded for an upcoming Walt Disney Records project, Tigger Mania.

It was my absolute pleasure to speak with Peter Frampton a few weeks ago in an interview for the Classic Rock Home Page.

PW: Can you tell me a little bit about Tigger Mania? How did that come about?

PF: Yea, that came about from Disney...got ahold of me, Harold Kleiner from Disney, and asked me would I be interested in doing a track for Tigger. A Tigger record. And I said Yes. I've got a two and a half year old baby as well, and she's very much into all that. So we did...they suggested a song, which was a Disney song, which I did, called the "Tigger Bop," and then I suggested, why don't we do "Show Me the Way," and we'll just taper the lyrics a little bit to take out the love interest, and it's all about show me the way, and Tiggers don't get lost, and all that sort of stuff. We changed it very slightly and it just works for kids.

PW: It sounds very cute. I have kids myself, and I really look forward to it.

PF: My daughter was in this. We went and did a video, in L.A., before Christmas, and my daughter's in the music video too.

PW: That's very sweet! Okay...I see that you're not touring this year with Ringo's All-Starr Band.

PF: No, because at the moment I'm working on music, writing and recording music for an upcoming film that's gonna shoot in April called The Rogues.

PW: Do you plan to rejoin Ringo at any time in the future?

PF: Oh, you know it's just that this is the first one in three tours that I haven't been able to do. I believe Todd Rundgren's there anyway, so they're definitly gonna do fine...it'll be great. He was in the band before me, actually. He was one of the ones, I think, the first or the second tour that Ringo ever did as the All-Starrs.

PW: With your Frampton Comes Alive album selling over 60 million copies and being the top-selling live album, do you feel that you can ever repeat its success, and would you even want to try?

PF: I think it's...I mean for me, being realistic, I think it's highly unlikely that I'll ever come close to that. I think that's a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Not that I'm saying it couldn't happen, but I think it's pretty unlikely. (laughs) It's one of those things where that record hit a nerve with people, that everybody had to have it at that particular time, and obviously people are still buying it. So...what was the last part of the question?

PW: Would you even want to try to repeat its success?

PF: I wouldn't do it consciously, no. To me, now, success has a different...the word means something different to me now. I've been there, done that, and I'm very proud of the success, obviously, and grateful, but basically the family always comes first now, where before it was always "me, me, me, career, career, career" before. Now it's...you get a little older, you get children, I think you understand. And I want to spend a little more time with them. So I'm not as driven as I was for success, success, success...to me I'm extremely successful right now. I've got a wonderful family and a great career. But that doesn't mean to say that I'm not gonna put out lots more albums and I plan on doing stuff..it started off as my hobby, music, playing guitar, and it always will be, no matter what...so I would just be doing things that I wanna do, as always, and if people pick up on it, that would be wonderful, if they don't, then I'm still enjoying myself.

PW: What was your most memorable tour with Humble Pie, with regards to the other acts you performed with?

PF: Oh, we played with so many different people that...I guess that playing Shea Stadium. I believe it was the summer of '70, with Grand Funk. Because we were actually the first band to play Shea Stadium since the Beatles. So it was pretty historic for us.

PW: Speaking of Grand Funk, how did you come to be involved in the Bosnia concerts with them?

PF: They just called me up, basically, and the connection there is that because I've known them for so long. In fact, they asked me to join the band at one point after I left Humble Pie. So I was almost a Funkee (laughs).

PW: A Funkhead?

PF: A Funker! (laughs) Anyway, that was basically David Fishof, who promotes the Ringo tours, was also doing that...working with Grand Funk. So I was rehearsing with Ringo at the time, and the request came through. So I did it, and it was great, and I've got the CD, and the video, and it all came out great.

What can you possibly say about this album that hasn't already been said? A&M just released a new 'deluxe edition' of the album in commemoration of its 25th anniversary, complete with all-new packaging and four unreleased bonus tracks. For those of you who may not already be familiar with this record, I'll give you a little background on the musical phenomenon called Frampton Comes Alive.

The original plan was for it to be a single album. Five songs. Somehow, in retrospect, it just doesn't seem right. There were so many great tracks on this album, there's no possible way it could be edited down like that. Frampton invited A&M co-founder Jerry Moss to come down to Electric Lady Studios to preview the album. The first words out of Moss' mouth were "where's the rest?"

With Moss' blessing for a double album, Frampton went back out on the road to record more dates. Once the tour was over, Frampton went back to Electric Lady Studios to mix the album with Chris Kimsey. After everything was ready to go, he played the new version for several of his trusted friends and confidants. One of these friends was Rolling Stone music critic, Cameron Crowe. "Cameron was beaming from ear to ear," recalled Frampton. "He felt every track was better than the one that had come before it."

Now that the finished album was in the hands of the record company, it was time for a vacation. When he returned ten days later, things were already beginning to take off. Concerts were selling out, sales records were being shattered, and the album had the top spot on the Billboard chart for ten weeks straight--eventually surpassing Carole King's 'Tapestry' as the best selling album of all time.

For this new deluxe edition, the producers/engineers went back and remixed and remastered everything, and for the first time (without the time constraints of an album side), put the songs back in the proper order. As a special bonus, four songs--all previously unavailable and picked by Frampton himself--were added back into the set. From a musical standpoint, the album holds up quite well, even after all this time (not counting the tepid cover of "Jumping Jack Flash").

Having said all that, you're probably wondering… how's it sound? Outstanding. A&M really outdid themselves on this one. They did a great job in the remixing and remastering process. It's a bit strange at first hearing the songs in a different order, but the album sounds better than ever before. In addition to the new packaging, there's a new essay by John McDermott, plus a ton of new photos and lyrics to all the songs. All reissues should look and sound this good.

FRIDAY ON MY MIND

Monday morning feels so bad
Everybody seems to nag me
Coming Tuesday I feel better
Even my old man looks good
Wednesday just don't go
Thursday goes too slow
I've got Friday on my mind

CHORUS
(See my baby) Gonna have fun in the city (feel like fucking you)
(Do my baby screw) Be with my girl she's so pretty (all I want to do)
(I'll go crazy) She looks fine tonight
(zoom zoom zoom) She is out of sight to me (so divine)
  (Tonight)  I spend my bread
  (Tonight)  I lose my head
(Tonight)  I've got to get tonight
Monday I have Friday on my mind

Do the five day drag once more (Monday blue)
There is nothing else that bugs me
More than working for the rich men (poor man, beggar man,  thief)
Hey I'll change that scene one day
Today I might be mad
Tomorrow I'll be glad
'Cause I'll have Friday on my mind

CHORUS

(See my baby) (feel like fucking you)
Gonna have fun
(zoom zoom zoom)
Be with my girl (repeat ad lib.)

I'M A ROAD RUNER

Money, who needs it
Let me live my life free and easy
Put a toothbrush in my hand
And let me be a travellin' man
Cause I'm a road runner baby

I'm a road runner baby
Can't stay in one place too long
I'm a road runner baby
One look at me and I'll be gone

Well you can love me if you wanna
But I do declare
When I get restless, I've got to move somewhere
Cause I'm a road runner baby
Anywhere is my home

And I love the life I live
And I'm gonna live the life I love
A road runner baby

Don't want no woman
To tie me down
Got to be free baby
To roam around

All my life I've been like this
And if you love me it's your own risk
Cause when the dust hits my shoes
I've got the urge to move
Yes I'm a road runner baby
Got to keep movin' on

Hey, and I live the life I love
And I love the life I live
I'm a road runner baby

Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...

Don't want no woman
To tie me down
Got to be free baby
To roam around

All my life I've been like this
And if you love me it's your own risk
Cause when the dust hits my shoes
I've got the urge to move
Yes I'm a road runner baby
Got to keep movin' on

Hey, and I live the life I love
And I love the life I live
I'm a road runner baby

Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...
Road, road runner...

SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED (I'm yours)

Like a fool I went and stayed too long
Now I'm wondering if your love's still strong
Oo baby, here I am, signed, sealed delivered, I'm yours

Then that time I went and said goodbye
Now I'm back and not ashamed to cry
Oo baby, here I am, signed, sealed delivered, I'm yours

Here I am baby
Oh, you've got the future in your hand
(signed, sealed delivered, I'm yours) Here I am baby,
oh, you've got the future in your hand
(signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours)
I've done alot of foolish things
that I really didn't mean
Hey, hey, yea, yea, didn't I, oh baby

Seen a lot of things in this old world
When I touched them they did nothing, girl
Oo baby, here I am, signed, sealed delivered, I'm yours, oh I'm yours

Oo-wee babe you set my soul on fire
That's why I know you are my only desire
Oo baby, here I am, signed, sealed delivered, I'm yours

Here I am baby
Oh, you've got the future in your hand
(signed, sealed delivered, I'm yours) Here I am baby,
oh, you've got the future in your hand
(signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours)
I've done alot of foolish things
that I really didn't mean
I could be a broken man but here I am

With your future, got your future babe (here I am baby)
Here I am baby (signed, sealed delivered, I'm yours)
Here I am baby, (here I am baby)
Here I am baby (signed, sealed delivered, I'm yours)
Here I am baby, (here I am baby)
Here I am baby (signed, sealed delivered, I'm yours)

BABY, I LOVE YOUR WAY

Shadows grow so long before my eyes
And they're moving across the page
Suddenly the day turns into night
Far away from the city
But don't hesitate 'cuz your love won't wait
Ooh baby I love your way (everyday)
Wanna tell you I love your way
Wanna be with you night and day
Moon appears to shine and light the sky
With the help of some fireflies
I wonder how they have the power to shine, shine, shine
I can see them under the pine
But don't hesitate'cuz your love won't wait
Ooh baby I love your way (everyday)
Wanna tell you I love your way
Wanna be with you night and day
But don't hesitate'cuz your love won't wait
I can see the sunset in your eyes
Brown and grey and blue besides
Clouds are stalking islands in the sun
I wish I could buy one out of season
But don't hesitate'cuz your love won't wait
Ooh baby I love your way (everyday)
Wanna tell you I love your way
Wanna be with you night and day
Ooh baby I love your way (everyday)
Wanna tell you I love your way
Wanna be with you night and day

I CAN'T STAND IT NO MORE

When you wake up and she's next to you
You can't stand what she's putting you through
Can't take no more so I'm goin' away
I can't stand it no more
I can't stand it no more
I can't stand it no more
I can't stand it no more

Ev'ry day I feel a diff'rent man
Caught adrift and there's no sight of land
Hey baby do I come back to you
No I can't stand it no more
I can't stand it no more
I can't stand it no more
I can't stand it no more

Ev'ry woman made a fool out of me
My mama told me when she set me free
She said, "Son, son you just have got to find
Find a girl who will treat you like I do."

I can't stand it no more
I'm goin' away
I can't stand it no more
Don't ask me to stay
I can't stand it no more
'Cause there's nothin' left to say
I can't stand it no more

SHOW ME THE WAY

I wonder how your feeling
There's ringing in my ears
And no one to relate to 'cept the sea
Who can I belive in
I'm kneeling on the floor
There has to be a force who do I phone
The stars are out and shinning, but all I really want to know...
Oh won't you show me the way
I want you ...show me the way
Well, I can see no reason
You living on your nerves
When someone drops a cup and I submerge
I'm swimming in a circle
I feel I'm going down
There has to be a fool to play my part
Well someone thought of healing, but all I really want to know...
Oh won't you show me the way (everyday)
I want you ...show me the way
I want you day after day
I wonder if I'm dreaming
I feel so unashamed
I can't belive this is happening to me
I watch you when you're sleeping, and then I want to take your love
Oh won't you show me the way (everyday)
I want you ...show me the way
I want you day after day
Oh won't you show me the way (everyday)
I want you ...show me the way
I want you day after day

BREAKING ALL THE RULES

We are the people one and all
From deliverance to the fall
From the battle and the heat
To our triumph and defeat
We are the young ones crying out
Full of anger full of doubt
And we're breaking all of the rules
Never choosing to be fools
We are tired of being used
We are constantly excused
In the battle and the heat
In the shadow of retreat
We are the young ones crying out
Full of anger full of doubt
And we're breaking all of the rules
Never choosing to be fools
We are the people one and all
From deliverance to the fall
From the bitter to the brave
From the cradle to the grave
We are the young ones crying out
Full of anger full of doubt
And we're breaking all of the rules
Never choosing to be fools

ALL NIGHT LONG

Trees falling leaves come alive, watch them glide
Eyes come to life when you smile for a while
Tables keep turning now the full moon has been seen
Know what I mean

Tell you what to do baby - all night long
It would take me - all night long
Show you how I feel - all night long
I've seen you in the papers they say you play at pool
I think you got me snookered if we play your rules

Maybe you can't see the way to be sure anymore
I can't help feeling like closing the door
Images are fading and the thought of you has gone
Baby it's wrong

'Cause all I need is - all night long
It would only take me - all night long
To show you how I feel - all night long
They say you read me like a book then make the book a film
You can write the screen play I can't wait 'til then

I wish I knew what I could do
It feels like somethings overdue
Communications broken down
Still got me snookered when you wear your crown

All night long
It would only take me - all night long
Won't ya, won't ya give - all night long
Yeah, I've seen you in the papers they say you play at pool
I think you got me snookered no exception to the rule
Give me - all night long
Won't ya, won't ya give - all night long
It would only take me - all night long
To show you how I feel
'Cause you still got me snookered and it's quite unreal

JUMPING JACK FLASH

I was born in a cross-fire hurricane
And I howled at my ma in the driving rain,
But it's all right now, in fact, it's a gas!
But it's all right.  I'm Jumpin' Jack Flash,
It's a gas!  Gas!  Gas!

I was raised by a toothless, bearded hag,
I was schooled with a strap right across my back,
But it's all right now, in fact, it's a gas!
But it's all right, I'm Jumpin' Jack Flash,
It's a gas!  Gas!  Gas!

I was drowned, I was washed up and left for dead.
I fell down to my feet and I saw they bled.
I frowned at the crumbs of a crust of bread.
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I was crowned with a spike right thru my head.
But it's all right now, in fact, it's a gas!
But it's all right, I'm Jumpin' Jack Flash,
It's a gas!  Gas!  Gas!

Jumping Jack Flash, its a gas
Jumping Jack Flash, its a gas
Jumping Jack Flash, its a gas
Jumping Jack Flash, its a gas
Jumping Jack Flash
