'There Is Nothing Left To Lose' is the third album by former Nirvana sticksman Dave Grohl's band, Foo Fighters. A noticeably more polished album than predecessor 'The Colour And The Shape', nevertheless the crisp songwriting and irresistible melodies are still there in full force, making this albuman essential purchase. Includes the singles 'Learning To Fly', 'Next Year', 'Breakout' and 'Generator'.

Foo Fighters were the most unexpectedly mercurial band in '90s rock, boasting a different lineup for each of their three albums. The ever-shifting membership didn't help erase the image that the group was merely a vehicle for Dave Grohl, and made it seem like Grohl was something of a dictator, at least to some biased outside observers. That's why their third record, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, comes as somewhat of a surprise. It is the first Foo Fighters album that sounds like the work of a unified, muscular band, and the first one that rocks really hard. A lot of credit should go to Adam Kasper, who produced the record with the band. There Is Nothing Left to Lose has a stripped-down sound and an immediate attack that makes even the poppier numbers rock hard. The organic, natural sound is welcome, but the album also benefits from the strongest set of songs Grohl and Foo Fighters have yet written. There are the typical strong singles, but there's no fat or filler; each track has a memorable hook or melody, and they seem all the more catchy because they're delivered with conviction and confidence. And that's why the album sounds like the first true band album Foo Fighters have made — the group sounds assured and confident, where they previously seemed like they had something to prove. It's as if they know they have few peers in straight-ahead post-grunge hard rock, so they're willing just to lie back and turn out a solid set of 11 songs. They make it sound easy and fun, and that's what really sets them apart from their contemporaries. That and the fact that they're getting better as they're losing members and growing older, which is certainly a rarity in rock & roll.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine - All Music Guide

Riding the momentum of the hit single "Learn to Fly," which hit No. 1 on the modern-rock charts long before this album's release, the Foo Fighters' third record is unarguably its most refined and poppy. The ominous riff that the opens "Stacked Actors" (which sounds like something Kurt Cobain could have hacked out on Nirvana's gnarly In Utero) is pretty much a red herring. The 10 tunes that follow are a succession of hook-laden pop songs tarted up with guitarist-vocalist (and former Nirvana drummer) Dave Grohl's thick guitars and increasingly sugar-sweet vocals. Nearly every cut on There Is Nothing Left to Lose has the potential of following "Learn to Fly" up the charts. The production is big and friendly and songs like "Generator," "Aurora," and "Headwires" just melt in your mouth. And even though the Foo Fighters' latest is seductively sweet in sound, there are just enough rough edges and lyrical angst to keep things interesting.

Just what is it that you do when the world catches up with you? Dave Grohl's pre-Foo Fighters career was about rebellion and breaking moulds, whether it was in Washington DC hardcore bands (Mission Impossible, Scream) or in Nirvana. When he stepped out from behind the drum kit and put out Foo Fighters, Grohl revealed a nifty knack for a tune and great ear for a guitar riff (and the drumming was still among the best around). He kept it up for the band's second album and the There Is Nothing Left To Lose is firmly in the same vein. That can be a good thing--there are no stinkers here--but after a pair of successful albums that have established him firmly as a talent in his own right, Grohl sometimes feels like he's on autopilot. (And the drumming, for a change, is unremarkable.) Maybe the album should have been called There's Nothing Left To Prove.

Randy Silver - Amazon.co.uk

On the surface, it seems as if Dave Grohl has made the wrong decision. Just as bands like Creed and Sevendust are hitting Billboard pay dirt by amping, sludging, and, occasionally, hip-hopping up ye auld sounds of Seattle circa 1991, Grohl has decided to explore his more restrained, contemplative side. Sure, the Foo Fighters' third album opens up with a punkified slug fest that could make the Melvins proud, but when it settles down we're whisked off to a weird private space between NEVERMIND and the Zombies' "She's Not There," where Grohl's vocals vacillate from folky tenderness to hopped-up moaning. And so it goes throughout THERE IS NOTHING TO LOSE, where each anthemic rave-up is a channel to a poppy maturity. Such tendencies are brilliantly balanced on the sweet, spiky "Breakout" and the dreamy single "Learn to Fly," which expand on the sound of the band's huge hit, "Big Me," and clear the way for the jangly "Next Year" and kicky pop-rocker "Generator." Still, Dave seems happy sailing past industry standard. The gorgeous country-rocker "Ain't It the Life" practically bellows the message that life's better here as it basks in its contented daydream believin', and the sound of Grohl maturing away from punk without getting soft or simple is quite a pleasure. Ultimately, he's proven that you don't have to be a slathering rap-metal meathead or a Goo-y pop tart to make potent, passionate alt-rock in the midst of the post-grunge boom he helped invent. Now that's maturity.

Jon Dolan - Barnes & Noble

Having released two platinum-selling, arse-stomping albums, Dave Grohl's Foo Fighters are a legitimate power-pop force, refusing to look back or devolve into a tamer, de-fanged version of Nirvana. The band's third album, There's Nothing Left To Lose, recalls the emotional weightiness of its predecessor, 1997's The Colour And The Shape, on which Grohl vented while discarding some of the sonic intensity he exhibited on the Foo Fighters' 1995 self-titled debut. On the new record, the band ropes in the full-throttle immediacy that characterized its earlier songs such as "This Is A Call" and "Monkey Wrench," but the group also pays more attention to dynamics and variety. Grohl finally reveals his songs' melodic, almost soft-rock core, which glows brightly on the penetrating "Gimmie Stitches," and softens the album's most hummable song, the dreamy "Ain't It The Life." Radio-ready gems such as the sizzling single "Learn To Fly" and the unabashedly retro-poppy "Next Year" are more refined than the Foo Fighters' past glories, but somehow, they still pack a mighty wallop.

Glen Sansone - CMJ.com

The first thirty seconds of the Foo Fighters' third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, are a bridge to singer Dave Grohl's past: Drummer Taylor Hawkins pounds nails into his snare, Grohl's guitar sounds sick with distortion and Nate Mendel's Sumo-size bass belly-flops from the high diving board. And then the trio veers off toward less-familiar, and decidedly softer, terrain as Grohl wrestles with the post-grunge question of the moment: Could Evan Dando have had the right idea all along?

With the Lemonheads, Dando was the pinup boy for alterna-rock wimpiness, the mellowest, dreamiest ballad writer of the Nirvana generation, and perhaps the most reviled. Yet Dando-worthy singles such as the Goo Goo Dolls' "Name" and "Iris" provide irrefutable evidence that there are few quicker tickets to platinum for a former alt-rocker than a power ballad.

Grohl hasn't been able to bring himself to write his answer to "Iris" just yet; his punk background makes him allergic to string sections. Instead, on There Is Nothing Left to Lose he tries to finesse a trickier strategy: Rather than embracing power-ballad excess, he attempts to sneak up on it. Besides a smattering of keyboards and the occasional tambourine, There Is Nothing Left to Lose is distinguished by its punky guitar-bass-drums directness. In almost every way it is a more modest effort than its predecessor, The Colour and the Shape, an album that wore out the Foo Fighters' attack-dog, soft-then-loud approach.

If not quite as bold as its title implies, There Is Nothing Left to Lose nonetheless marks a departure, with greater emphasis on melody and actual singing. Once blessed with a vocal range that consisted of two tones -- conversational and catastrophic -- Grohl adopts a jazzy cadence on "Stacked Actors" and a hint of a twang on "Ain't It the Life." He sounds star-struck on "Aurora" and smitten on "Headwires." He comes closest to touching the hem of Iris' frock on the sappy "M.I.A.," singing, "Getting lost in you again is better than being found." But on "Learn to Fly," the big guitars and arching melody crush all quibbles. Some grunge romantics may even hear it as a touching little hymn to his splintered former band. It's that rare achievement: a guilt-free power ballad. Come back, Evan, all is forgiven.

Stacked Actors

Oh mirror mirror, you're coming in clear,
I'm finally somewhere in between.
I'm impressed, what a beautiful chest,
I never meant to make a big scene.
Will you resign to the latest design,
You look so messy when you dress up in dreams.
One more for hire, a wonderful liar,
I think it's time that I should come clean.

Stack dead actors, stacked to the rafters,
Line up the bastards all I want is the truth.

Hey, hey now, can you fake it,
Can you make it look like we won.
Hey, hey now, can you take it,
And we cry when they all die blonde.

God bless, what a sensitive mess,
Yeah, but things aren't always what they seem.
Your teary eyes, your famous disguise,
Never knowing who to believe.
See through, yeah but what do you do,
When you're just another aging drag queen.

Stack dead actors, stacked to the rafters,
Line up the bastards all I want is the truth.

Hey, hey now, can you fake it,
Can you make it look like we won.
Hey, hey now, can you take it,
And we cry when they all die blonde.

Stack dead actors, stacked to the rafters,
Line up all the bastards all I want is the truth.

Stack dead actors, stacked to the rafters,
Line up all the bastards and we cry when they all die blonde.

Hey, hey now, can you fake it,
Can you make it look like we won.
Hey, hey now, can you take it,
And we cry when they all die blonde.

Stack dead actors, stacked to the rafters,
Line up all the bastards all I want is the truth.
Stack dead actors, stacked to the rafters,
Line up the bastards.

Cry when they all die blonde.

Breakout

You make me dizzy running circles in my head
One of these days I'll chase you down
Well look who's going crazy now
We're face to face my friend
Better get out
Better get out
You know you make me break out
Make me break out
I don't want to look like that
I don't want to look like that
You know you make me break out
Make me break out
I don't want to look like that
I don't want to look like that
You know you make me break out
You can see this on my face
It's all for you
The more and more I take
I break right through
Therapy still scares me
Putting me on my back again
I may be crazy, little frayed around the ends
One of these days I'll phase you out
Burn it in the blast off
Burn it in the blast off
Watching me crawl away
Try to get out
Try to get out
You know you make me break out
Make me break out
I don't want to look like that
I don't want to look like that
You know you make me break out
Make me break out
I don't want to look like that
I don't want to look like that
Yeah
I don't want to look like that
Break out
Break out
Break out
Break out
Go, go, go
You know you make me break out
Make me break out
I don't want to look like that
I don't want to look like that
You know you make me break out
Make me break out
I don't want to look like that
I don't want to look like that
Yeah
I don't want to look like that
I don't want to look like that
You know you make me break out
Make me break out
Make me break out
Yeah

Learn To Fly

Run and tell all of the angels
This could take all night
Think I need a devil to help me get things right
Hook me up a new revolution
Cause this one is a lie
We sat around laughing and watched the last one die

And I'm looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something to help me burn out bright

I'm looking for complication
Looking cause I'm tired of lying
Make my way back home when I learn to fly

I think I'm done nursing the patience
I can wait one night
I'd give it all away if you give me one last try
We'll live happily ever trapped if you just save my life
Run and tell the angels that everything's alright...

I'm looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something to help me burn out bright

I'm looking for complication
Looking cause I'm tired of trying
Make my way back home when I learn to fly
Make my way back home when I learn to

Fly along with me, I can't quite make it alone
Try to make this life my own

Fly along with me, I can't quite make it alone
Try and make this life my own

I'm looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life (sign of life)
Looking for something to help me burn out bright

I'm looking for complication
Looking cause I'm tired of trying (tired of trying)
Make my way back home when I learn to

I'm looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life (sign of life)
Looking for something to help me burn out bright

I'm looking for a complication
Looking cause I'm tired of trying
Make my way back home when I learn to fly
Make my way back home when I learn to fly
Make my way back home when I learn to… (Learn to, learn to, learn to, learn to…)

Gimme Stitches

I can be your right of way
So we can get out of here
I'll always be the one who runs from everyone
Cause everyone's just too weird
Sink with someone tied to me
I'm making you volunteer
Another one has come and gone
They crawl along, make them disappear
Dress me up in stitches it's now or never
Tired of wearing black and blue
Dress me up in stitches it's now or never
Dying to get my blood on you
Blood on you
Take another stab at me, I promise in time I'll heal
But yesterday went on and on a bit too long
I waited out on High Street
There's nothing to find out here
Another day has come and gone
They crawl along, wasting all these years
Dress me up in stitches it's now or never
Tired of wearing black and blue
Dress me up in stitches it's now or never
Dying to get my blood on you
How can you go on when you're murdering someone
Killing me like you do
Gimme stitches now or never
Gimme stitches now or never
Gimme stitches now or never
Blood on you
Blood on you
Blood on you
Blood on you
Blood on you
Blood on you
Dress me up in stitches it's now or never
Tired of wearing black and blue
Dress me up in stitches it's now or never
Dying to get my blood on you
How can you go on when you're murdering someone
Killing me like you do
Gimme stitches now or never
Gimme stitches now or never
Gimme stitches now or never
Gimme stitches now or never
Blood on you
Blood on you

Generator

Lately I'm getting better
Wish I could stay sick with you
But there's too many egos left to bruise
Call it sin, you can call it whatever
Eating deep inside of you
Well if it were me, it's all I'd ever do
Steal me now and forever
I'll steal something good for you
The criminal in me is no one new
Till you find something better
When there's nothing left to use
And everything starts going down on you

I'm the Generator, firing whenever you quit
Yeah whatever it is, you go out and it's on
Yeah can't you hear my motored heart
You're the one that started it

Send me out on a tether
Swing it round, I'll spin your noose
You let it down
I'll hang around with you
Till you find someone better
When there's no one left to use
And everyone keeps going down

I'm the Generator, firing whenever you quit
Yeah whatever it is, you go out and it's on
Yeah can't you hear my motored heart
You're the one that started it

I'm the Generator, firing whenever you quit
Yeah whatever it is, you go out and it's on
Yeah can't you hear my motored heart
You're the one that started it
I'm the Generator
I'm the Generator
I'm the Generator
I'm the Generator
I'm the Generator
I'm the Generator
Yeah can't you hear my motored heart
You're the one that started it

Aurora

You believe there's something else
To relieve your emptiness
And you dream about yourself
And you bleed and breathe the air
And it's on and on and on and on
I just kinda died for you
You just kinda stared at me
We will always have the chance
We can do this one more time
Hell yeah, I remember aurora
Hell yeah, I remember aurora
All this time
Hell yeah, I remember aurora
Take me now, we can spin the sun around
And the stars will all come out
Then we'll turn and come back down
Turn and come back down
You believe there's somewhere else
Where it's easier than this
And you see outside yourself
And you buy the hole you'll fill
And it's on and on and on and on
Hell yeah, I remember aurora
Hell yeah, I remember aurora
All this time
Hell yeah, I remember aurora
Take me now, we can spin the sun around
And the stars will all come out
Then we'll turn and come back down
Turn and come back down
On and on and on aurora wait for everyone
Wait till the last one's done
On and on and on aurora wait for everyone
Wait till the last one's done
Take me now, we can spin the sun around
And the stars will all come out
Then we'll turn and come back down
Turn and come back down
Turn and come back down
Turn and come back down
On and on and on and on and on
On and on and on and on and on
On and on and on and on and on
On and on and on and on and on
On and on and on and on and on

Live-In Skin

Take your payroll
And your lottery
There's a place I know
There's a robbery
And I swear I'll never tell
If you swear you'll never tell
And we'll all make out so well
We will all make out so well
Head on with my hate
Into the lights ahead
I'm amazed that I'm still standing
And I demand that we all blend in
I'm amounted
Just the same old
Glitter story
From the sea floor
Metamorphosis
And I can't change back for you
I will not change back for you
I must live in skin that's new
I'm a livid skin that's new
Head on with my hate
Into the lights ahead
I'm amazed that I'm still standing
And I demand that we all blend in
Head on with my hate
Into the lights ahead
I'm amazed that I'm still standing
And I demand that we all blend in
I'm amounted
I'm amounted
I'm amounted
I'm amounted
Turn your insides out to the outside
Turn the outside in to the inside
Trade your outside in for the inside
Turn it around again
Turn your insides out to the outside
Turn the outside in to the inside
Trade your outside in for the inside
Turn it around again
I'm amounted
I'm amounted
I'm amounted
I'm amounted
And I can't change back for you
I will not change back for you

Next Year

I'm in the sky tonight
There I can keep by your side
Watching the wide world riot and hiding out
I'll be coming home next year
Into the sun we climb
Climbing our wings will burn white
Everyone strapped in tight
We'll ride it out
I'll be coming home next year
Come on get on get on
Take it till life runs out
No one can find us now
Living with our heads underground
Into the night we shine
Lighting the way we glide by
Catch me if I get too high
If I come down
I'll be coming home next year
I'm in the sky tonight
There I can keep by your side
Watching the whole world wind around and round
I'll be coming home next year
Come on get on get on
Take it till life runs out
No one can find us now
Living with our heads underground
I'll be coming home next year
I'll be coming home next year
Everything's alright up here
If I come down
I'll be coming home next year
Say good-bye now
Say good-bye now
Say good-bye now
Say good-bye now
I'll be coming home next year
I'll be coming home next year
Everything's alright up here
If I come down
I'll be coming home next year
I'll be coming home next year
I'll be coming home next year
I'll be coming home next year
I'll be coming home next year
I'll be coming home next year
I'll be coming home next year
I'll be coming home next year
I'll be coming home next year
I'll be coming home next year

Headwires

Have you been headwired
Were you satisfied
Did it free the feelings in your spine
Sleeping way inside all this time
Will you meet your mind where the night collides
Will you greet yourself when the sun arrives
I'll just stay behind, I've met mine
Better than a bullet being fired
Tangled in your headwires now
Better than a bullet being fired
Tangled in your headwires
Headwires now
Help you feed the wires when your head unwinds
And if our headlines become entwined
You can have all mine, I'll be fine
There's a reason why keeping me alive
There's a cure in me that I wish were mine
As long as I can fight, I'll survive
Better than a bullet being fired
Tangled in your headwires now
Better than a bullet being fired
Tangled in your headwires
Stationed on the wire, one day I'll let go
Tell them all hello
Tell them all hello
Stationed on the wire, one day I'll let go
Tell them all hello
Tell them all hello
The sun is on Arlandria
The sun is on Arlandria, headwires
The sun is on Arlandria
The sun is on Arlandria, headwires
The sun is on Arlandria

Ain't It the Life

Dear Haley
Can you save me from the borrowed cloud I'm on
All you gotta do is try
Pray you're just getting by
Hey wait I thought you'd made it
How'd your bottled crown fall off
Tell me how'd you get so tired
Faded down to the wire
Try living a lie and kicking out the same old guise
Wasting time
So very ordinary
Wait until my bomb goes off
See the actors run and hide
Fake it all in stride
One day we all can say we're gone
And haunt the ground we're from
Everything's so open wide
Here within the divide
Try living a lie and kicking out the same old guise
Wasting time
Ain't it the life
Ain't it the life
Ain't it the life
Got no crime
Just sail on by
Sail on by
Ain't it the life
Ain't it the life
Ain't it the life
Got no crime
Just sail on by
Sail on by
Ain't it the life
Just sail on by
Try living a lie and kicking out the same old guise
Wasting time
Ain't it the life
Ain't it the life
Ain't it the life
Got no crime
Just sail on by
Sail on by
Ain't it the life
Ain't it the life
Ain't it the life
Got no crime
Just sail on by
Sail on by
Ain't it the life

M.I.A.

Call and I'll answer at home in the lost and found
You say that I'm much too proud
Someone who's taking pleasure in breaking down
Nevermind the mannequins, drunk in their hollow town
Drinking their spoils down, cheap imitations
The revelation is now
You wont find me I'm going MIA
Tonight I'm leaving going MIA
Getting lost in you again is better than being numb
Counting every minute till the feeling comes crashing down
Run when it hits the ground
I'm good at escaping
But better at flaking out
Call in unanswered the center becomes blown out
Stuck on the inside now
It's fear I'm embracing
I never could face you down
You wont find me I'm going MIA
Tonight I'm leaving going MIA
Getting lost in you again is better than being numb
Red, red, laced around your head
Cold and rescued
Cold and rescued
Cold and rescued
Cold and rescued
Cold and rescued
Cold and rescued
Call and I'll answer at home in the lost and found
You say that I'm much too proud
Someone who's taking pleasure in breaking down
You wont find me I'm going MIA
Tonight I'm leaving going MIA
So you don't find me I'm going MIA
Tonight I'm leaving going MIA
Say good-bye to me I'm going MIA
I can find relief I'm going MIA
Getting lost in you again is better than being numb
Better than being numb
Better than playing dumb
