One by One is the most accomplished album Foo Fighters have made, which isn't necessarily the same as the best. Picking up the clean, focused sound and attitude of There Is Nothing Left to Lose, One by One is gleaming hard rock: it may have a shiny production, but hits hard in its rhythm and its impeccably distorted guitars. Dave Grohl's songs often express (or at least suggest) tortured emotions in their lyrics, but the album doesn't hit at a gut-level; it's too polished for that. It's not a bad thing, since the band is damn good and the production is more focused than any of the Foos' previous albums. The problem is, Grohl's songwriting has slipped slightly. It's still sturdy and melodic, yet not as immediate or memorable. Nothing is as majestic as "Learn to Fly," haunting as "Everlong," gut-crunching as "Monkey Wrench," or even as boneheadedly irresistible as their contribution to the Orange County soundtrack, "The One". Instead, it all fits together and sounds good as a piece, without offering individual moments to savor. Not the worst tradeoff, of course, but it's hard not to wish that the songs stuck in your head the way they used to, even if the album is still enjoyable as a whole.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine - All Music Guide

There's a certain sameness to the spiky, percussive bursts of punk-pop tabled by the Foo Fighters. Yet it's pretty hard to fault players as palpably enthusiastic as Dave Grohl and his gang. Every Foos record, up to and including their fourth studio disc, One by One, fluently merges rock menace with unabashedly cheery melody and thoughtful if cryptic lyrics. (And those videos!) So while insistent, guiterrorized tracks like "All My Life" and "Times Like These (One-Way Motorway)" don't expand the Foos' oeuvre, they're catchy as hell and well worth the price of admission. Those searching for veiled Nirvana/Courtney references will no doubt unearth them (or unearth what seem like veiled references), while longtime fans can relax in the knowledge that a seasoned pro like Grohl knows better than to muck with a winning formula.

Kim Hughes - Amazon.com

Ex-Nirvana-Drummer Dave Grohl mag's wieder heftiger.

Hört "Times like these", und ihr werdet verstehen.

Every Foo Fighters album, up to and including their fourth studio disc, One By One, fluently merges rock menace with unabashedly cheery melody and thoughtful if somewhat cryptic lyrics. So while insistent, guitar-terrorised tracks like "All My Life" and "Times Like These (One-Way Motorway)" don't expand the Foos' oeuvre, they're as catchy as hell and well worth the proverbial price of admission. Those searching for veiled Nirvana / Courtney Love references will no doubt unearth them (or unearth what seem like veiled references), while longtime fans can relax in the knowledge that a seasoned pro like Grohl knows better than to meddle with a truly winning formula. True, there's a certain sameness to the spiky, percussive bursts of punk-pop tabled by the Foo Fighters. Yet it's pretty hard to fault players as palpably enthusiastic as Dave Grohl and his gang.

After years of playing the foil for main man Dave Grohl's musical whims, Foo Fighters come together as a band on One by One, and the mix of bulldozer riffs and richly textured pop will sound like nirvana to longtime fans. Where past albums didn't really hold together, One by One is a decidedly organic collection that takes some killer guitar work to the bank, as evidenced by the lead single, "All My Life," "Low," and the squalling "Have It All." Things get a little gnarlier on "Tired of You," an arrhythmic foray that features guest guitar by Queen's Brian May, if nary a peep from drummer Taylor Hawkins. But the album certainly gives the drummer some: Hawkins adds a palpable sense of portent to the Big Country–styled "Times like These" and really cuts loose on the album-ending epic "Come Back" (which sidles up to - but never really embraces - '70s-vintage prog). One by One's path to Foo-ition wasn't without its potholes - it's been two years since their Grammy-winning There Is Nothing Left to Lose - but the album made it down that road with enough power and shine to raise hopes for future journeys. Initial pressings include a bonus DVD featuring one new song ("The One"), as well as videos for "All My Life" and "Walking a Line" and a slew of other trinkets.

David Sprague - Barnes & Noble

When Dave Grohl sings, "I See Your Ghost," in the first song on One by One, it's impossible not to think about Kurt Cobain. Grohl has now spent more years as the Foo Fighters' singer and guitarist and has made more studio albums (four) with them than he did as Nirvana's drummer. Yet he knows as well as anyone that his band will never be as earth-shaking as Nirvana were.

The grunge that Grohl pounded into shape in Nirvana now dominates the rock airwaves. It may be textured with hip-hop or pop or punk, but the self-doubt, raspy vulnerability, down-tuned guitars and volcanic crescendos of grunge are omnipresent. Grohl's task, which he has taken on with grace and persistence, is to make rock that sets its own stakes high and doesn't get stuck looking back. "I'm done done/On to the next one!" he shouts in "All My Life."

He hasn't retreated from the existential battles of grunge. Through four albums, the Foo Fighters' songs have grappled with what to make of uncertainty and betrayal, of emptiness and random fury. But where Nirvana's songs revolved around Cobain's boundless loneliness, Grohl sings about connections with other people. "Down and out again/But I'm down with you," he promises in "Lonely As You."

Nirvanologists may be tempted to hear One by One as Grohl's reflections on the band and its aftermath. By that reading, "Low" could be a snarl at Courtney Love ("I'm hanging on you, baby blue"), while "Halo" suggests a glimpse of Cobain: "You pray you're gonna make it/And then when you're done you keep fucking up." In "Lonely As You," Grohl sings, "Blame it on the past/It's the last place I knew you."

Whatever their genesis, the songs are stronger and broader than autobiography. They could apply to all kinds of tempestuous relationships, including romance, as One by One churns up some unabashed love songs. "Tired of You," featuring guitar glissandos from Queen's Brian May, has a pained promise: "I won't go getting tired of you." The more jubilant "Overdrive" vows, "We're going life or death," and "Burn Away" tells "my bride" that the newlyweds will "burn away from all the other flames" -- wedding planners, take note.

In their music, Foo Fighters have neither fled grunge nor let it confine them. Taylor Hawkins on drums is nearly as explosive as, well, Dave Grohl, and the band's latest lead guitarist, Chris Shiflett, has traded distortion for clarity without losing any impact. Potent guitar riffs define every song on One by One: furious tremolos ricocheting across the stereo in "Low," twangy New Wave dissonances in "Have It All," warm folk-rock strumming in "Halo," implacable one-chord repetition in "All My Life" and those faithful descending grunge progressions in "Lonely As You" and "Tired of You."

Grohl still pushes his mild-mannered voice toward the throat-tearing rasp that came more naturally to Cobain. Yet the Beatles, Neil Young and Husker Du mean as much to the Foos as grunge progenitors such as the Melvins. In "Times Like These," with major-key guitars surging around his unguarded voice, Grohl rightly name-checks a Husker Du album when he sings, "I'm a new day rising."

The album's finale, "Comeback," brings back Nirvana's combination of march and ballad, complete with fuzzed guitars, converging vocal harmonies and an instrumental section that builds and builds. "Dead on the inside, I've got nothing to prove/Keep me alive and give me something to lose," Grohl sings, then lets loose his grunge howl to roar, "I will come back!" He might be singing about a reunion with a lover or a grunge resurrection, and in the end it makes no difference: It's rock that draws power from its determination to struggle onward.

All My Life

All my life I’ve been searching for something
Something never comes, never leads to nothing
Nothing satisfies, but I’m getting close
Closer to the prize at the end of the rope
All night long I dream of the day
When it comes around and it’s taken away
Leaves me with the feeling that I feel the most
Feel it come to life when I see your ghost

Calm down, don’t you resist
You’ve such a delicate wrist
And if I give it a twist
Something to hold when I lose my grip

Will I find something in there?
To give me just what I need
Another reason to bleed
One by one hidden up my sleeve x2

(chorus)
Hey don’t let it go to waste
I love it but I hate the taste
Weight, keep pinning me down) x2

Will I find a believer?
Another one who believes
Another one to deceive
Over and over down on my knees

If I get any closer
And if you open up wide
And if you let me inside
On and on I got nothing to hide x2

(chorus)x2

All my life I’ve been searching for something
Something never comes, never leads to nothing
Nothing satisfies, but I’m getting close
Closer to the prize at the end of the rope
All night long I dream of the day
When it comes around and it’s taken away
Leaves me with the feeling that I feel the most
Feel it come to life when I see your ghost

Then I’m done done, on to the next one
Done done, and I’m on to the next one x6
Done I’m done and I’m on to the next
Done done on to the next one
Done I’m done and I’m on to the next one
Done done on to the next one
Done I’m done and I’m on to the next

(chorus)x2

Done done on to the next one
Done I’m done and I’m on to the next

Low

Hey you
Are you in there?
I'm stuck outside you
We could use
One another
Another like you

(Chorus)
You be my passerby
I'll be your new, one to pass through
Screws inside turn so tight
Turning on you
I'm hanging on you

Baby blue
Don't go nowhere
I'm right beside you
Me and you
Going nowhere
I'm right beside you

(Chorus)

Taking you as low as you go
As low as you go
(2x)

(Chorus)

Taking you as low as you go
As low as you go
(4x)

Have It All

You're my size I need to try you on
Someone in between the right and wrong
Through everything you kept your wings apart
Through everything you stayed the same old art
And when I've had enough

She drains me
When I'm empty
She fills herself
She takes it all
In too deep
She's spilling over me
In too deep
She's spilling over me
Go on and have it all

Winding through this maze you hold me in
Searching all these days to find the end
You're everything, you're everything I'm not
I'm anything I'm anyone you want
And when I've had enough

She drains me
When I'm empty
She fills herself
She takes it all
In too deep
She's spilling over me
In too deep
She's spilling over me
Go on and have it all

Have it all (x2)

You're everything you're everything I'm not
I'm anything I'm anyone you want

She drains me
When I'm empty
She fills herself
She takes it all
In too deep
She's spilling over me
In too deep
She's spilling over me
In too deep
She's spilling over me
In too deep
She's spilling over me
Have it all

Times Like These (One-Way Motorway)

I, I'm a one way motorway
I'm a road that drives away
then follows you back home
I, I'm a street light shining
I'm a wild light blinding bright
burning off alone

(uh huh huh)

it's times like these you learn to live again
it's times like these you give and give again
it's times like these you learn to love again
it's times like these time and time again

I, I'm a new day rising
I'm a brand new sky
to hang the stars upon tonight
I, I'm a little divided
do I stay or run away
and leave it all behind?

(uh huh huh)

it's times like these you learn to live again
it's times like these you give and give again
it's times like these you learn to love again
it's times like these time and time again

(oh x11)

(uh huh huh)

it's times like these you learn to live again
it's times like these you give and give again
it's times like these you learn to love again
it's times like these time and time again(x3)

Tired

I can be your liar
I can be your bearer of bad news
Sick and uninspired by the diamonds in your fire
Burning like a flame inside of you
Is this just desire or the truth

So shame on me for the ruse
Shame on me for the blues
Another one returned that I'll never use

I won't go getting tired of you
I won't go getting tired of you
I'm not getting tired
I won't go getting tired of you
I won't go getting tired of you
I'm not getting tired

Hanging on this wire
Waiting for the day where I'll have to choose
Cursed by love so dire
One more boy for hire
One more boy to lend a hand to you
Is this just desire or the truth

So shame on me for the ruse
Shame on me for the blues
Another one returned that I'll never use

I won't go getting tired of you
I won't go getting tired of you
I'm not getting tired
I won't go getting tired of you
I won't go getting tired of you
I'm not getting tired of you

I can be your liar
I can be your bearer of bad news
Sick and uninspired by the diamonds in your fire
Burning like a flame inside of you
Is this just desire or the truth

So shame on me for the ruse
Shame on me for the blues
Another one returned that I'll never use

I won't go getting tired of you
I won't go getting tired of you
I'm not getting tired
I won't go getting tired of you
I won't go getting tired of you
I'm not getting tired of you

Burn Away

I have spent a lifetime
Waiting for the chance
To save you my confession
Save the one last dance

The same old superstition
Haunt us now and then
I'm begging for ignition
To start it all again

We'll burn away
Burn away, burn away my pride

We'll burn away
Burn away, burn away my pride

We'll burn away from all the other flames that burn tonight

We'll burn away
Burn away, burn away my pride

Breathe for me from now on
Breathe for me when I'm gone
Burn out beyond
Out beyond the sun

Will you still remember
There behind the skies
Walking on the embers
Standing in their light

The hardest part is knowing
Everything must die
The hardest part is waiting here
Waiting to collide

We'll burn away
Burn away, burn away my pride

We'll burn away
Burn away, burn away my pride

We'll burn away from all the other flames that burn tonight

We'll burn away
Burn away, burn away my pride

Breathe for me from now on
Breathe for me when I'm gone
Burn out beyond
Out beyond the sun

Burn on, burn on
Calling to you
Burn on, burn on
Calling to you
Burn on, burn on...

I'll never burn again
Never burn again [x3]
We'll never burn again
Never burn again [x3]

Lonely As You

What would I do?
Lonely as you
Pleasure or pain I can't choose
What would I do?
Lonely as you
Pleasure or pain I can't choose

Wake up your dreaming and I can't stand your screamin'
Drowning out these prayers just some words without meanin'
Spare all the preachin' my secret's worth keepin'
No one understands like I do

Keep out of reach I'm your leadin' deletion
Hide behind these masks
Though they still see right through them
Every now and then
You're down and out my friend
Down and out again
Down and out again
Down and out again
I'm down with you

One more time for the last time
One more time for release
One more time for the last time
Everyone wants to believe

Blame it on youth all these years I've been losin'
Blame it on the past it's the last place I knew you
Blame all the children their rage and their ruin
Blame it on the black and the blue
Every now and then
You're down and out my friend
Down and out again
Down and out again
Down and out again
I'm down with you

One more time for the last time
One more time for release
One more time for the last time
Everyone wants to believe

Every now and then
You're down and out my friend
Down and out again
Down and out again
Down and out again
But I'm done with you

One more time for the last time
One more time for release
One more time for the last time
Everyone wants to believe

One more time for the last time
One more time for release
One more time for the last time
Everyone wants to believe

One more time for the last time
One more time for release
One more time for the very last time
Everyone wants to believe
All Right!

Halo

Good and bad I swear I've had them
Both are overrated
But isn't it fun when you get hold of one
Some go bad and some come back
The good ones all get taken
I'm calling your bluff
You ain’t strong enough
Wait and pray you'll pick on me the day I raise my hand
Guess that I've been blessed but I'll be damned

Halo god only knows
Right behind me everywhere I go

Say your prayers when you get scared
You pray you're gonna make it
and then when you're done
you keep fucking up
One day soon I'll disappear
and if you'll come I'll take you
somewhere to go
To keep from growing old
Wait and pray you'll pick on me the day I raise my hand
Guess that I've been blessed but I'll be damned

Halo god only knows
Right behind me everywhere I go

Disappear the light is fading
Disappear outside their range
Disappear I'm tired of waiting
Disappear before we fade away

Overdrive

Coming down I'm coming round
this time I think I'm waking up
Give me loud to drown it out
before the world starts breaking up
You change and then you change again
Turning like a wheel inside your head

Yours and mine and left and right
there's still two sides to everyone
You and I get on with life
and pray we'll find a better one
You change and then you change again
Turning like a wheel inside your head

Overdrive we're going life or death
Overdrive we're going life or death
Overdrive we're going life or death
Two strangers on the mend

Hurry now we're getting out
this time there's nothing stopping us
Leave behind this vacant town
tonight and let it turn to rust
You change and then you change again
Turning like a wheel inside your head

Overdrive we're going life or death
Overdrive we're going life or death
Overdrive we're going life or death
Two strangers, no relation, on the mend

You change and then you change again
Turning like a wheel inside your head

Coming down I'm coming round
this time I think I'm waking up
Give me loud to drown it out
before the world starts breaking up
You change and then you change again
Turning like a wheel inside your head

Overdrive we're going life or death
Overdrive we're going life or death
Overdrive we're going life or death
Two strangers on the mend

Overdrive we're going life or death (Overdrive we're going life or death)
Overdrive we're going life or death (Overdrive we're going life or death)
Overdrive we're going life or death
Two strangers, no relation
Two strangers, no relation, on the mend

Disenchanted Lullabye

Disenchanted Lullabies
Sing me yours, I'll sing you mine
Sing with me now what's a boy to do?
What's a boy to do?

Sing along for yesterday
Sing along my soul to take
Sing along another song for you
What's a boy to do?

Chorus:
I may be scattered
A little shattered
What does it matter
No one has a fit like I do

I may be scattered
A little shattered
What does it matter?
No one has a fit like I do
I'm the only one that fits you

Whisper with me pass the time
Whisper for the days gone by
Whisper with the voice inside of you

With this ring you will be mine
With this ring I'll multiply
With this ring surrendering to you
What's a boy to do?

Comeback

Moving, again
*Comfort of the chase
Now and again
This my saving grace

(chorus)
Dead on the inside I've got nothing to prove
Keep me alive and give me something to lose
Goodbye, this time
Leaving you
I've been gone so long, so, gone so long
But I will come back
I will come back x7
For you)

Changes, changing
Back and forth again
Trading faces
Strangers in the end

(chorus)
For you x2)

I will come back x8
For you
I will come back x5
