Fine Young Cannibals only released two albums, so it's slightly unusual that they even have a greatest hits collection like Fine Young Cannibals Finest. After all, a dedicated fan will have both records, and casual fans will only want the singles on The Raw and the Cooked, thereby eliminating the audience for the collection. Despite these misgivings, Finest does its job well, featuring 12 of their biggest hits and best-known songs ("She Drives Me Crazy," "Johnny Come Home," "Good Thing," "Suspicious Minds," "Don't Look Back"), plus two unreleased cuts ("The Flame" and "Since You've Been Gone") to entice collectors. If you want the highlights, Finest is fine, but most fans will want to stick with the two original albums.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All-Music Guide

The Fine Young Cannibals almost had it all--taste, chops, and a peerless singer in Roland Gift. In other words, Simply Red with credibility. The one thing they lacked was longevity. This elegant, no-fuss anthology is a fitting testimonial.

Jeff Bateman, Amazon.com

...Their sound--post-punk's nervous rhythms combined with soulful arrangements and melodies--has held up well; three new songs neither augment nor diminish the band's brief yet impressive legacy.

She drives me crazy

I can't stop the way I feel
Things you do don't seem real

Tell me what you've got in mind
'Cause we're runnin' out of time
Won't you ever set me free
This waiting round is killing me

She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
I can't help myself

I can't get any rest
People say I'm obsessed
Everything you say is lies
But to me there's no surprise
What I had for you was true
Things go wrong, they always do

She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
I can't help myself

I won't make it on my own
No one likes to be alone

She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
I can't help myself

Uh huh huh

She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
I can't help myself

Uh huh huh

She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
And I can't help myself

Johnny come home

Nobody knows the trouble you feel
Nobody cares, the feelin' is real
Johnny, we're sorry, won't you come on home
We worry, won't you come on
What is wrong in my life
That I must get drunk every night
Johnny, we're sorry won't you come on...
Use the phone, call your mom
She's missing you badly, missing her son
Who do you know, where will you stay
Big city life is not what they say
Johnny, we're sorry, won't you come on home
We worry, won't you come on
What is wrong in my life
That I must get drunk every night
Johnny, we're sorry won't you come on...
You'd better go, everything's closed
Can't find a room, money's all blown
Nowhere to sleep, out in the cold
Nothing to eat, nowhere to go
Johnny, we're sorry, won't you come on home
We worry, won't you come on
What is wrong in my life
That I must get drunk every night
Johnny, we're sorry won't you come on. home
We worry, won't you come on home...

Good thing

The one good thing in my life
Has gone away I don't know why
She's gone away I don't know where
Somewhere I can't follow her

The one good thing didn't stay too long
My back was turned and she was gone

Good thing where have you gone
Good thing you've been gone too long
Hey hey hey woo hoo hoo

People say I should forget
There's plenty more don't get upset
People say she's doin' fine
Mutual friends I see sometime

That's not what I want to hear
I want to hear she wants me near

Good thing where have you gone
Good thing you've been gone too long
Hey hey hey woo hoo hoo

Then one day she came back
I was so happy that I didn't ask
Morning came into my room
Caught me dreaming like a fool

Good thing where have you gone
Good thing you've been gone too long
Hey hey hey woo hoo hoo

Suspicious minds

We're caught in a trap
And I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Why can't you see
What you're doing to me
When you don't believe a word I say?

We can't go on together
With suspicious minds
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds

So, if an old friend I know
Drops in to say hello
Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?

Here we go again
Asking where I've been
You can't see these tears I cry
Tears I cry

We can't go on together
With suspicious minds
And be can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds

Oh let our love survive
Or dry the tears from your eyes
Let's don't let a good thing die
When honey, you know
I've never lied to you
You, you, you
Mmm yeah, yeah

Blue

Ooooohaaaah.
I’ve had a bad day, yeah.
My hometown is falling down, I’m mad about that.
And people there don’t seem to care, I’m mad about that.

Chorus:
Good god, all my tears
There’s no denying life
Would be better if I never ever had to live with you,
Blue - it’s a colour so cruel

Repeat chorus

Government has got me wrong, I’m mad about that.
And it makes me feel like I don’t belong, I’m mad about that.
It’s making life a misery, you would have taken the liberty
Government has got me wrong, I’m mad about that.

Chorus

Repeat chorus

There you go telling lies, it’s no surprise
I say a prayer, to make you care,
You wouldn’t listen
It’s been too long, it’s time you’re gone
Get away from here
I’ve had too much - but not enough
It’s time you left

Chorus x 3

Ever fallen in love

You spurn my natural emotions
You make me feel like dirt and I'm hurt
And if I cause a commotion
I only end up losing you and that's worse

Ever fallen in love with someone
Ever fallen in love in love with someone
Ever fallen in love in love with someone
You shouldn't've fallen in love with

I can't see much of a future
Unless we find out now just what's to blame
And we won't be together much longer
Unless we realize that we both the same thats what i'm saying

Ever fallen in love with someone
Ever fallen in love in love with someone
Ever fallen in love in love with someone
You shouldn't've fallen in love with

You disturb my natural emotions
You make me feel like dirt and I'm hurt
And if I cause a commotion
I only end up losing you and that's worse my pride

Ever fallen in love with someone
Ever fallen in love in love with someone
Ever fallen in love in love with someone
You shouldn't've fallen in love with

did you ever, fall in love, did you ever, fall in love,
did you ever, did you ever, did you ever,

did you ever, ever fall in love, did you ever, ever fall in love,
did you ever, did you ever, did you ever...

Don't look back

Never had the good things only money could buy
I drive my car but I haven't got a car to drive
Never had a holiday in a tropical sun
Good times look like they're never gonna come

Oh, I know these times are bad
And it makes you want to cry
Don't be sad, we'll get by

Baby, baby, don't look back
It won't do you no good
Baby, baby, don't look back
I'm going to leave and I think that you should

I've spent my life in a place like this
On the first bus out I'm gonna get myself a lift
If you stay then that's alright
If you want to go the it's got to be tonight

Oh, I know these times are bad
And it makes you want to cry
Don't be sad, we'll get by

Baby, baby, don't look back
It won't do you no good
Baby, baby, don't look back
I'm going to leave and I think that you should

Never had the good things only money could buy
I drive my car but I haven't got a car to drive

Oh, I know these times are bad
And it makes you want to cry
Don't be sad, we'll get by

Baby, baby, don't look back
It won't do you no good
Baby, baby, don't look back
I'm going to leave and I think that you should

Tell me what

Tell me what, tell me what
Tell me what I 've got to do

To make you notice, to make you look this way
What do I have to say
Tell me what, tell me what I have to say

To keep you with me, to make you want to stay
To have you every day
Tell me what, tell me what I gotta do

Are you happy, I can never tell
You keep it to yourself

Tell me what, tell me what it is you feel

Do you get frightened
Am I comin' on, just a little too strong
And you're so quiet, I never know or not
If I'm right or wrong

Tell me what, tell me what
Tell me what I gotta do

Is there something I ought to be told
Do you want to go
Tell me what, tell me what it is you know

So it's over, then we're really through?
What I heard is true
Tell me what, tell me what your gonna do

To keep you with me, to make you want to stay
Too have you every day
Tell me what, tell me what I've gotta do

I'm not the man i used to be

When I'm in trouble or out of step
If my balance has been upset
Oh there's a feeling I can't accept
There's one thing that helps me to forget

Wonder what I'm thinking
Wonder why I'm drinking
But it's plain to see
I'm not the man I used to be

If life were easy and didn't ask,
didn't tease me or take things back
I'd just start to understand,
what makes me the man I am

Wonder what I'm thinking
Wonder why I'm drinking
But it's plain to see
I'm not the man I used to be

Oh it's plain and it's a shame
I'm not the man I used to be

I've lost dreams that won't come back
memories fading fast
I should save the ones I have
What's the use, most of them are bad

Wonder what I'm thinking
Wonder why I'm drinking
But it's plain to see
I'm not the man I used to be

Oh it's plain and it's a shame
I can't explain
But I'm not the man I used to be

Oh it's plain and it's a shame
I can't explain
But I'm not the man I used to be

Funny how love is

**I go to places we used to go
I still see people we used to know
Friends they ask me where is she now
I have to tell them we're over now

**When at first you left I thought I'd surely die
I couldn't see a future without you by my side
We're not together but I'm still alive
I'd rather not see you for a really long time

Funny how love is
Funny how love is
Funny how love is

**I don't want your magazines I don't want your clothes
Take them from my house let me be alone
**Never try to catch me in or call me on the phone
Don't send me letters I don't want to know

**When at first you left I thought I'd surely die
I couldn't see a future without you by my side
We're not together but I'm still alive
I'd rather not see you for a really long time

Funny how love is
Funny how love is
Funny how love is

**Love is so funny; you sure put a joke on me
Funny how love is...
