Bryan Ferry invests considerable time and energy in cover albums (he should, considering that they compose a good portion of his solo catalog), treating them with as much care as a record of original material. He's always found ways to radically reinvent the songs he sings, so it's easy to expect that his collection of pop standards, As Time Goes By, would re-imagine the familiar. Instead, As Time Goes By is his first classicist album, containing non-ironic, neo-traditionalist arrangements of songs associated with the '30s. That doesn't mean it's a lavish affair, dripping with lush orchestras — it's considerably more intimate than that. Even when strings surface, they're understated, part of a small live combo that supports Ferry throughout the record. He's made the music as faithful to its era as possible, yet instead of rigidly replicating the sounds of the '30s, he's blended Billie Holiday, cabaret pop, and movie musicals into an evocative pastiche. Ferry is at his best when he's exploring the possibilities within a specific theory or concept; with As Time Goes By, he eases into these standards and old-fashioned settings like an actor adopting a new persona. Since Ferry has always been a crooner, the transition is smooth and suave. He makes no attempt to alter his tremulous style, yet it rarely sounds incongruous — he may sound a little vampirish on "You Do Something to Me," but that's the rare case where he doesn't seamlessly mesh with his romantic, sepia-toned surroundings. On the surface, it may seem like a departure for Ferry, but in the end, it's entirely of a piece with his body of work. True, it may not be a major album in the scheme of things, but it's easy to be seduced by its casual elegance.

No stranger to covers, Bryan Ferry has often opted for classics from other times and places. As Time Goes By focuses on music largely from the 1930s and '40s and conjures that era's aura of fine cigars, sateen gowns, and gentlemanly romance. The opening title track summons images of Bogie and Ingrid, and is one of the finest moments in the collection. The swanky versions of Nina Simone's signature "Love Me or Leave Me" and "I'm in the Mood for Love" (which has a faint Martin Denny overtone) are perfectly suited to Ferry's low-key vocals (he's no real crooner, let's face it). His talented band swings with fervor, especially on the upbeat tunes "The Way You Look Tonight," "Lover Come Back to Me," and "Just One of Those Things." There are a number of intimate, romantic moments, but the highlight is Ferry's take on "Falling in Love Again," first made famous way back when with devastating sadness by Marlene Dietrich. Ferry's version is almost as moving.

Leave it to Bryan Ferry to greet the turn of the year/decade/century/millennium with wistfulness, languor, and ennui. As Time Goes By, an album of songs by the likes of Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and Kurt Weill, evokes a 1930s-style elegance and a worldweary sense that, despite our current premillennial tension, things are unlikely to change very much. "It’s still the same old story," Ferry croons knowingly on the title track, which dates back, of course, to the movie Casablanca. "The fundamental things apply/As time goes by." Ferry was early on the preapocalyptic tip, however, both with his band Roxy Music, which captured the post-modern feel of things falling apart back in the '70s, and in his equally unnerving solo work. As Time Goes By mines a vein that he has worked before – he's recorded collections of other people's songs on These Foolish Things, Another Time, Another Place, and Taxi. As usual, however, Ferry's backwards-gazing also seems strangely prescient. So-called "lounge" music is fashionable, and the album's point of view seems quite contemporary in its unpredictable shifts. Are the bleating clarinets and muted trumpet on "Sweet and Lovely" straight or playfully ironic? Is the singer who sends up "I'm in the Mood for Love" the same man who seems genuinely wonder-struck in "Where or When"? It's hard to answer those questions with any precision. But one thing is certain. As Time Goes By will provide the soundtrack for many dinner parties this New Year's Eve, and, even as it summons up a near-forgotten era, it will simultaneously sound exquisitely of the moment.

Although Ferry is fondly remembered as MC for Roxy Music's experimental cabaret, he currently fancies himself an interpreter in the Sinatra mode. This time around, approaching gleaming standards and torch songs with due reverence, he lets the fact that he once sang an ode to an inflatable sex-toy infiltrate each piece. In any given Ferry performance, his reputation as a crooner does as much of the work as his larynx. And his take on these dapper jazz age classics sustains the formula. Considering the temper of our times, Ferry's languorous update of chestnuts like "Where or When" and "Miss Otis Regrets" is an archival mission akin to Paul Simon's Graceland. After all, who now writes lines like Cole Porter's "Do do that voodoo that you do so well"? As Time Goes By employs sympathetic sidemen. Enrico Tomasso's trumpet provides grand arousal on "Sweet and Lovely." And "I'm in the Mood for Love"'s mood can't fail: it's a cocktail of conga, accordion, Abraham Laborovich's best Grappelli impersonation and a fille's whispering cameo. "I haven't got time for the waiting game," moans the singer on the extraordinary "September Song," but Kurt Weill's time is clearly the right time for Ferry.

If the idea of Bryan Ferry singing "The Way You Look Tonight" doesn't instantly make your nipples hard, proceed directly to the next review, with blessings on your head. But if you're one of the millions of otherwise reasonable people who swoon for the former Roxy Music crooner's seductively debonair trill, feast upon As Time Goes By and lead a healthier, happier, more meaningful life. Ferry's voice has aged as handsomely as the rest of him, with a rough, smoky edge making his instrument more intimate than ever. As Time Goes By is his much-anticipated standards album, torching up old-fashioneds like "Falling in Love Again," "Miss Otis Regrets" and "September Song" with simpatico backup musicians who swing more than they rock. It's the Divine Bryan's answer to Sinatra's September of My Years, a painfully erotic meditation on age, memory and staying power. As Bryan Ferry understands, the fundamental things apply, as time goes by.

AS TIME GOES BY

You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss
A sigh is just a sigh
The fundamental things apply
as time goes by
And when two lovers woo
They still say "I love you"
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
as time goes by
Moonlight and love songs never out of date
Hearts full of passion, jealousy, and hate
Woman needs man, and man must have his mate
That no one can deny
It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers
as time goes by

THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT

Some day, when I'm awfully low,
When the world is cold,
I will feel a glow just thinking of you...
And the way you look tonight.
Oh but you're lovely, with your smile so warm
And your cheek so soft,
There is nothing for me but to love you,
And the way you look tonight.
With each word your tenderness grows,
Tearing my fear apart...
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose,
Touches my foolish heart.
Lovely ... Never, ever change.
Keep that breathless charm.
Won't you please arrange it ?
'Cause I love you
Just the way you look tonight.

EASY LIVING

Living for you is easy living
It's easy to live when you're in love
And I'm so in love
There is nothing in life but you
I never regret the years that I'm giving
They're easy to give when you're in love
I'm happy to do whatever I do for you
For you maybe I'm a fool
But it's fun
People say you rule me with one wave of your hand
Darling, it's grand
They just don't understand
Living for you is easy living
It's easy to live when you're in love
And I'm so in love
There's nothing in life but you

I'M IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE

I'm in the mood for love
Simply because you're near me
Funny, but when you're near me
I'm in the mood for love
Heaven is in your eyes
Bright as the stars we're under
Oh, is it any wonder?
I'm in the mood for love
Why stop to think of whether
This little dream might fade?
Let's put our hearts together
Now we are one, I'm not afraid
If there's a cloud above
If it should rain, we'll let it
But for tonight forget it
I'm in the mood for love
Why stop to think of whether
This little dream might fade?
Let's put our hearts together
Now we are one, I'm not afraid
If there's a cloud above
If it should rain, we'll let it
But, for tonight, forget it
I'm in the mood for love

WHERE OR WHEN

It seems we stood and talked like this, before
We looked at each other in the same way then
But I can't remember where or when
The clothes you're wearing are the clothes you wore
The smile you are smiling you were smiling then
But I can't remember where or when
Some things that happened for the first time
Seem to be happening again
And so it seems that we have met before
And that we laughed before, also loved before
But who knows where or when

WHEN SOMEBODY THINKS YOU'RE WONDERFUL

When somebody thinks you're wonderful
What a difference in your day
Seems as though your troubles disappear
Like a feather in your way
When somebody thinks you're wonderful
Tells you with a smile so sweet
What are little stones you step upon
Just a meadow 'neath your feet
And how you meet the morning
And gaily swing along
At night you may be weary
But your heart still sings a song
When somebody thinks you're wonderful
Love is mighty close to you
Just another thing more wonderful
Making all her dreams come true

SWEET AND LOVELY

Sweet and lovely
Sweeter than the roses in May
Sweet and lovely
Heaven must have sent her my way.
Skies above me
Never were as blue as her eyes;
And she loves me
Who would want a sweeter surprise?
When she nestles in my arms so tenderly
There's a thrill that words cannot express.
In my heart a song of love is taunting me
Melody haunting me.
Sweet and lovely
Sweeter than the roses in May
And she loves me
There is nothing more I can say

MISS OTIS REGRETS

Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today, madam,
Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today.
She is sorry to be delayed,
but last evening down in Lover's Lane she strayed, madam,
Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today.
When she woke up and found that her dream of love was gone, madam,
She ran to the man who had led her so far astray,
And from under her velvet gown,
She drew a gun and shot her love down, madam,
Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today.
When the mob came and got her and dragged her from the jail, madam,
They strung her upon the old willow across the way,
And the moment before she died,
She lifted up her lovely head and cried, madam......
Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today

TIME ON MY HANDS

Time on my hands, you in my arms
Nothing but love in view
Then if you fall, once and for all
I'll see my dreams come true
Moments to spare
With someone you care to
One love affair for two
And so with time on my hands
And you in my arms
And love in my heart all for you

LOVER COME BACK TO ME

The sky was blue
And high above
The moon was new
And so was love
This eager heart of mine was singing
Lover where can you be
You came at last
Love had its day
That day is past
You've gone away
This aching heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I'm so lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky was blue
The night was cold
The moon was new
But love was old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me

FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN

Falling in love again
Never wanted to
What am I to do?
Can't help it
Love's always been my game
Play it as I may
I was born that way
Can't help it
Girls cluster to me
Like moths around a flame
And if their wings burn
I know I'm not to blame

LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME

This suspense is killing me
I can't stand uncertainly
Tell me now I've got to know
Whether you want me to stay or to go
Love me or leave me
Or let me be lonely
You won't believe me, I love you only
I'd rather be lonely
Then happy with someone else
You might find the night time
The right time for kissin'
But night time is my time
For just reminiscin'
Regrettin' instead of
Forgettin' with somebody else
There'll be no one
Unless that someone is you
I intend to be independently blue
I want your love
But I don't want to borrow
To have it today to give back tomorrow
For my love is your love
There's no love for nobody else

YOU DO SOMETHING TO ME

You do something to me
Something that simply mystifies me
Tell me, why should it be,
You have the power to hypnotise me
Let me live 'neath your spell
Do do that voodoo that you do so well
For you do something to me
That nobody else could do

JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS

It was just one of those things
Just one of those crazy flings
One of those bells that now and then rings
Just one of those things
It was just one of those nights
Just one of those fabulous flights
A trip to the moon on gossamer wings
Just one of those things
If we'd thought a bit, of the end of it
When we started painting the town
We'd have been aware that our love affair
Was too hot, not to cool down
So goodbye, dear, and amen
Here's hoping we meet now and then
It was great fun
But it was just one of those things

SEPTEMBER SONG

For it's a long, long time
from May to December
And the days grow short
when you reach September
And the Autumn weather
Turns the leaves to flame
And I haven't got time
For the waiting game
And the days dwindle down
to a precious few
September November
And these few precious days
I'd spend with you
These golden days
I'd spend with you
When you meet with the young man early in Spring
They court you in song and rhyme
They woo you with words and a clover ring
But if you examine the goods they bring
They have little to offer but the songs they sing
And a plentiful waste of time of day
A plentiful waste of time
