THE COMPLETE BILL EVANS ON VERVE:

Over 21 hours of music, (269 tracks) representing almost everything ever recorded while Bill was under contract with Verve Records from 1962-1970. There are the live trio sides with Philly Joe Jones (some formerly released on LP as "California Here I Come") the many false starts and studio banter on the uncompleted takes, allowing a glimpse of the process in the studio, all the Stan Getz sessions, the two sessions with Shelly Manne, the long-out-of-print Gary McFarland album with Bill as featured soloist, the Monica Zetterlund recordings from Europe, more from the "Left to Right" album and lots more. [The infamous "VIP Theme" album (1963) is not included, as was previously and incorrectly stated here. We were sent an email by Evans scholar Phil Bailey - who wrote the notes. In fact, Verve had plans to resissue the album itself, but apparently Claus Ogerman, the session's arranger, talked them out of it. Our thanks to Mr. Bailey for this valuable info] The Verve set comes with a 160 -page booklet that includes interviews with Evans, and comments by musicians that worked with Bill, like Marc Johnson and Paul Motian, but its now-infamous steel box packaging (watch the rust!) is its serious major flaw. At a $300.00 list price, its an expensive set, but just about all the main Bill Evans from roughly 1963 through 1970 is right here. (This CD box set is no longer available.)

THE COMPLETE BILL EVANS ON VERVE is an 18-disc, 269-track box set featuring every track that Bill Evans recorded for Verve between 1962 and 1969, including 98 previously-unreleased tracks. It includes a 160-page, full-color book.

THE COMPLETE BILL EVANS ON VERVE was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package - Boxed and for Best Historical Album.

While its sheer bulk negates its interest to a general audience, The Complete Bill Evans on Verve is an essential library piece for any serious jazz fan or historian. Spanning 18 CDs, 269 tracks and 21 hours, the box set includes all of Evans' recordings for the label between 1962 and 1969, including 19 albums, two previously unreleased albums and 98 previously unreleased tracks. During these years, the pianist made some of his greatest music, including his legendary Village Vanguard sessions, and the set charts all of his changes, as he plays with his trio and as a solo artist, as well as a rare session with a rhythm quartet and strings. While the set itself could be a little more user-friendly — it's encased in a steel box, with a 160-page booklet and an 18-disc fanpack on separate shelves — the music itself is nearly flawless and nearly essential for most serious jazz fans.

Leo Stanley - All Music Guide

The 18 CDs in this exhaustive set provide a comprehensive picture of Bill Evans from 1962 to 1969, a period when the pianist was both consolidating his fame and sometimes taking his music into untested waters, from unaccompanied piano to symphony orchestra. His work with multitracked solo piano, originally released as Conversations with Myself and the later Further Conversations with Myself, was the most remarkable new format for his introspective music. It gave Evans a way to be all the pianists he could be at once - combining densely chordal, harmonically oblique parts with surprising, rhythmic punctuation and darting, exploratory runs. Two dates with drummer Shelly Manne, in 1962 and 1966, reveal the stimulus Evans could find in a new playing relationship, as does the final disc with flutist Jeremy Steig. Evans also revisited significant earlier musical relationships. The Village Vanguard recordings from 1967 reunite him with the great drummer Philly Joe Jones, whose extroverted, polyrhythmic approach always worked wonderfully with the pianist's more introverted style. Along with the virtuosic young bassist Eddie Gomez, they make up one of the most stimulating of the many trios that Evans led throughout his career. There's also a superb set of duets with guitarist Jim Hall, another of Evans's most closely attuned musical partners. Evans's recordings with a symphony orchestra are marred by conductor Claus Ogermann's ponderous arrangements, and some false starts and multiple takes will appeal only to completists, but there are tremendous musical riches here. The set is packaged in an unfinished metal box designed to rust into an original object, but Evans's own originality is apparent everywhere.
