Paint the Sky With Stars: The Best of Enya is an excellent 16-song
overview of Enya's career, containing 14 selections from The Celts,
Watermark, Shepherd Moon, and The Memory of Trees — including
"Caribbean Blue," "Anywhere Is," "Marble Halls," "Book of Days," and,
of course, "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)" — as well as two previously
unreleased songs ("Only If...," "Paint the Sky With Stars") that fit
comfortably with her past work. Although Enya is, in many ways, an
album artist that creates a mood and sustains it through the course of
one disc, this is a fine sampler for listeners that only want the hits
and highlights.
New Age diva Enya first became widely known when her 1988 album
Watermark sold 4 million copies and launched the single "Orinoco Flow."
Her follow-up, Shepherd Moons, was even more successful, selling over
10 million copies despite its slightly lower grade of ethereal
enchantment. In 1997 she released Paint the Sky with Stars, an
assortment of her best work from these two early albums plus gems from
1995's The Memory of Trees and the soundtrack to the BBC series The
Celts. The most melodic and atmospheric examples of Enya's lovely
Celtic-flavored songwriting shine on this disc. Those unfamiliar with
the former Clannad member will find charm in such sweet lullabies as
"Marble Halls" and "China Roses" while delighting in the more energetic
"Book of Days," "Storms in Africa," and "Caribbean Blue." Overall, an
outstanding collection from an artist who gives New Age a good name.

Auf ihrem 97er Album Paint the Sky with
Albums The Memory of Trees und den Soundtrack zur BBC-Fernsehreihe The
dem New Age alle Ehre macht.

"Boadicea" kredenzt. ** Musik.: 03-04
...proves that no one can make a one-four-five chord progression sound
more enchanting. The new titles track is a snoozer in a bad way, but
the rest will put you to sleep with a smile on your face.
Entertainment Weekly (12/12/97, p.90) - Rating: B+
One of the first of the new breed of Celtic divas, Irish singer Enya's
evocative, waiflike vocals have become the standard by which most new
age music is measured. Easily recognizable, Enya's style has remained
essentially the same, with little variation on a successful formula.
Yet, however subtle her growth as a songwriter and vocalist has been
perceived, there is a clear difference in Enya's earlier works,
collected here for the first time in Paint the Sky with Stars: The Best
of Enya. In 1987, when she stepped away from Clannad, her family's
quasi-traditional Irish folk outfit, Enya began to draw on a diverse
wellspring of influences -- from traditional Celtic laments, to
classical intonations, to pop sensibilities -- to win the hearts of
loyal fans. Since then, Enya's continued to enchant her listeners with
her silken smooth voice but has done so on her own terms -- remaining
apart from the usual frenzy of the music business. Her strategy has
paid off, with five now classic, full-length albums under her belt
(including last year's best-selling A Day Without Rain), and a
repertoire that's grown to include soundtracks and film scores
(including her most recent credit for the 2001 blockbuster, Lord of the
Rings). Released in 1997, this collection preserves Enya's first four
recordings (1987's The Celts, 1988's Watermark, 1991's Shepard Moons,
and 1995's The Memory of Trees), in all of their fresh purity -- to
appreciate again without the clutter of the individual albums. It's all
saved here, including such classics as "Shepard Moons," "Book of Days,"
"Boadicea," "Ebudae," "On My Way Home," "Marble Halls," "China Roses,"
"Only If," and her breakout hit, "Orinoco Flow." While Enya's music may
be an acquired taste for some, she's easily palatable and actually
quite appealing here; and the raw tenderness captured in these songs
sound as if she's exploring her own creativity for the first time.
Paint the Sky with Stars is essential listening, not only for Enya
fans, but for anyone who wants to experience one of the most
distinctive female voices to emerge in the last two decades. If you'd
like to own only one Enya record, Paint the Sky with Stars more than
makes the grade.
Second only to the mighty U2 as Ireland's most successful recording
artist (with an incredible sales of 33 million albums worldwide over
the past decade), Enya's Celtic-inspired music is broad enough in scope
to transcend categories. As proof of her vast appeal, The Fugees, on
their international smash "Ready Or Not," sampled her hit recording of
"Boadicia." Often a gifted composer and possessor of a hauntingly
beautiful voice, too many of Enya's albums get dragged down with song
after song of pacifying, almost mind-numbing drones that sound vaguely
Celtic in influence but with little clear definition. Here the more
familiar and less filler-like tracks get bundled together so that old
and new fans will delight to such tracks as "Orinoco Flow," and her
latest single, "Only If," without wading through less successful
numbers.

BOOK OF DAYS
Ó lá go lá, mo thuras,
An bealach fada romham.
Ó oíche go hoíche, mo thuras,
na scéalta nach mbeidh a choích
ANYWHERE IS
I walk the maze of moments
but everywhere I turn to
begins a new beginning
but never finds a finish
I walk to the horizon
and there I find another
it all seems so surprising
and then I find that I know
Chorus:
You go there you're gone forever
I go there I'll lose my way
if we stay here we're not together
Anywhere is
The moon upon the ocean
is swept around in motion
but without ever knowing
the reason for its flowing
in motion on the ocean
the moon still keeps on moving
the waves still keep on waving
and I still keep on going
Chorus
I wonder if the stars sign
the life that is to be mine
and would they let their light shine
enough for me to follow
I look up to the heavens
but night has clouded over
no spark of constellation
no Vela no Orion
The shells upon the warm sands
have taken from their own lands
the echo of their story
but all I hear are low sounds
as pillow words are weaving
and willow waves are leaving
but should I be believing
that I am only dreaming
Chorus
To leave the thread of all time
and let it make a dark line
in hopes that I can still find
the way back to the moment
I took the turn and turned to
begin a new beginning
still looking for the answer
I cannot find the finish
It's either this or that way
it's one way or the other
it should be one direction
it could be on reflection
the turn I have just taken
the turn that I was making
I might be just beginning
I might be near the end.
ONLY IF...
When there's a shadow, you reach for the sun.
When there is love, then you look for the one.
And for the promises, there is this land.
And for the heavens are those who can fly.
Chorus:
If you really want to, you can hear me say
Only if you want to will you find a way.
If you really want to you can seize the day.
Only if you want to will you fly away.
Da da da da, da da da da da.
da da da da, da da da da da,
da da da da.
When there's a journey, you follow a star.
When there's an ocean, you sail from afar.
And for the broken heart, there is the sky.
And for tomorrow are those who can fly. [1]
Chorus
Da da da da, da da da da da.
da da da da, da da da da da,
da da da da.
Ooh go doe bay mwa.
Ooh go doe bay mwa.
Chorus
Ah!
d'aile...
Ooh go doe bay mwa.
Ooh go doe bay mwa.
Chorus
If you really want to you can seize the day.
Only if you want to will you fly away.

CHINA ROSES
Who can tell me if we have heaven,
who can say the way it should be;
Moonlight holly, the Sappho Comet,
Angel's tears below a tree.
You talk of the break of morning
as you view the new aurora,
Cloud in crimson, the key of heaven,
one love carved in acajou.
One told me of China Roses,
One a Thousand nights and one night,
Earth's last picture, the end of evening:
hue of indigo and blue.
A new moon leads me to
woods of dreams and I follow.
A new world waits for me;
my dream, my way.
I know that if I have heaven
there is nothing to desire.
Rain and river, a world of wonder
may be paradise to me.
I see the sun.
I see the stars.

(Instrumental)
PAINT THE SKY WITH STARS
Suddenly before my eyes
Hues of indigo arise
With them how my spirit sighs
Paint the sky with stars
Only night will ever know
Why the heavens never show
All the dreams there are to know
Paint the sky with stars
Who has paced the midnight sky?
So a spirit has to fly
As the heavens seem so far
Now who will paint the midnight star?
Night has brought to those who sleep
Only dreams they cannot keep
I have legends in the deep
Paint the sky with stars
Who has paced the midnight sky?
So a spirit has to fly
As the heavens seem so far
Now who will paint the midnight star?
Place a name upon the night
One to set your heart alight
And to make the darkness bright
Paint the sky with stars.
MARBLE HALLS
I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls
with vassals and serfs at my side,
and of all who assembled within those walls
that I was the hope and the pride.
I had riches all too great to count
and a high ancestral name.
But I also dreamt which pleased me most
that you loved me still the same,
that you loved me
you loved me still the same,
that you loved me
you loved me still the same.
I dreamt that suitors sought my hand,
that knights upon bended knee
and with vows no maidens heart could withstand,
they pledged their faith to me.
And I dreamt that one of that noble host
came forth my hand to claim.
But I also dreamt which charmed me most
that you loved me still the same
that you loved me
you loved me still the same,
that you loved me
you loved me still the same.
ON MY WAY HOME
I have been given
one moment from heaven
as I am walking
surrounded by night,
Stars high above me
make a wish under moonlight.
On my way home
I remember
only good days.
On my way home
I remember all the best days.
I'm on my way home
I can remember
every new day.
I move in silence
with each step taken,
snow falling round me
like angels in flight,
Far in the distance
is my wish under moonlight
