THE CELTS is the 1992 re-release of a 1987 album simply titled ENYA,
containing 15 selections originally composed for aBBC series of the
same name. Although a number of the tracks sound dated, several others,
including "To Go Beyond (II)"are notable for how they locate the
origins of the classic Enya sound, far removed from earlier Celtic
efforts. A tidy, dreamlike piece, "Epona", is about the Horse Goddess,
closely connected to Rhiannon, whose birds are said to awaken the dead.
The tale of a rebellious ancient queen who poisoned herself, "Boadicea"
finds Enya humming over a dark keyboard refrain.
Initially released simply as Enya, The Celts shows that the style she
became famous for on Watermark was already well under way. With
production and lyrical help fully in place thanks to her
husband-and-wife gurus Nicky and Roma Ryan, Enya's combination of
Celtic traditionalism and distinctly modern approach finds lush flower
here. All the elements that characterize her music -- open, clear nods
to her Irish heritage, any number of vocal overdubs to create an
echoing, haunting feeling, and layers of synth and electronic
percussion -- can be found almost track for track. The flip side is
that those who find such a combination to be gloopy mush won't be at
all convinced further by her work here. It's understandable why folk
music traditionalists and anti-mainstream types would get the hives,
but those not coming from that angle will find much that's rewarding.
Given that The Celts is a commissioned piece of work, it actually
stands on its own quite well. The charging surge of the title track
functions both as a fine introduction and its own stirring, quietly
powerful anthem, a good sign for the rest of the album. There are a
couple of slight missteps -- an electric guitar solo disrupts the
string-and-vocal flow of the truly lovely "I Want Tomorrow," for
instance. Generally, though, her musical instincts serve her very well,
with many striking highlights. The appropriately three-part "Triad"
showcases her ear for vocal work excellently, while both versions of
"To Go Beyond," especially the second, which closes the disc with an
exquisite extra string part, also are worthy of note.

Born Eithne Ni Bhraonain, this classically-trained pianist was kid
sister in the musical family that became Clannad, joining the Irish
band in 1979 but dropping out amicably three years later to pursue her
own muse. This music, produced in the mid-'80s as the soundtrack to a
BBC series, was released as her debut in 1987 and promptly ignored--yet
its mix of atmospheric soundscapes and Enya's lush, layered vocals,
sung in both English and Gaelic, is the template for her subsequent
global hits, beginning with Watermark the following year.

Enya hütet weitere klingende Träume in ihrem keltischen

I Want Tomorrow
Dawn breaks; there is blue in the sky.
Your face before me
Though I don't know why.
Thoughts disappearing like tears from the Moon.
Waiting here, as I sit by the stone,
They came before me
Those men from the Sun.
Signs from the heavens say I am the one.
[Chorus:]
Now you're here, I can see your light,
this light that I must follow.
You, you may take my life away, so far away.
Now I know I must leave your spell
I want tomorrow.
