from Early ELO (1971-1973).

Baby I Apologise - a previously unreleased track

The front cover shows the letters ELO in large type, with the heading Roll Over Beethoven just underneath. The mid section of the cover shows a group photograph from a concert (around the ANWR era), with the tracks #5, 7, 12 printed just below, all this on a popular blue space/star background. The back cover is very similar but with the track listing instead of the photo. The inside packaging again shows the space/star background. The single sheet booklet has the same space/star background but in grey scale(?) There are no liner notes and no additional info or photographs. The CD is printed with the same blue space/star background with the ELO large type & track listing.
There are no surprises about this release, guess Disky are trying to cash in on something? Do they have inside info that Jeff maybe releasing his long awaited solo album? Guess not, but sure is strange to release this so close after the dreadful "EMI Gold Collection". Maybe they want to make-up for it!
But wait, what's this - holy s**t not again!
The only problem I have with this, again the addition of the intro to "Roll Over Beethoven" on the end of "Momma". If this was the original release, as it was suggested to me, then it should've been made clear a very long time ago. But since this version only came to attention since the "Early ELO (1971-1973)", it is safe to say, someone screwed-up big time!
Are we going to be subjected to this version from now on? Please, please, please say no. Why can't the CD's "ELO II" or "Afterglow" masters be used rather than this and cut off the intro?
The question I ask is, why do EMI keep pushing the same material? Is there any new material in the vaults that could be put out? It would be great to have something a little bit different instead of the usual first two albums. Hell it's been five years since the release of the excellent "Early ELO 1971-1973", with all it's early versions & quad mixes. Surely there's more? (and don't call me surely).
Yet again this is one for the true collectors, & not the passing fans. The inclusion of "Baby I Apologise" helps the selling power, but not to the extent of finding new fans.
Overall I would give - package design 7/10, track listing 3/10 (and that's only because of my favourite "Baby I Apologise") The cost reflects the above and was HK$65 (US$8.40) (UK5.75)

Roll Over Beethoven

Gonna write a little letter gonna mail it to my local DJ,
It´s a jumpin little record I want my jockey to play,
Roll Over Beethoven, gotta hear it again today

My temperature´s risin, the juke box´s blowin a fuse,
My heart´s beatin´ a rhythm, singin´ out rhythm and blues,
Roll Over Beethoven, they´re rockin´ in two by two

Well if you feel like it, go get your lover and reel and rock it,
Roll it over and move on up now, go for cover and reel and rock it,
Roll it over, Roll Over Beethoven, tell Tchaikovsky the news

Early in the morning I´m a given you the warnin´,
Don´t you step on my blue suede shoes,
Hey diddle diddle gonna play my fiddle, I ain´t got nothin to lose,
Roll Over Beethoven, tell Tchaikovsky the news

She wiggles like a glow-worm, dances like a spinning top,
She got a crazy partner, you should of seen her reel and rock,
Long as she got a dime, the music will never stop

Well you feel you like it, go get your lover an reel and rock it,
Roll it over and move on up now, go for cover and reel and rock it,
Roll it over, Roll Over Beethoven, dig it in these rhythm and blues

Roll Over Beethoven, Roll Over Beethoven,
Roll Over Beethoven, Roll Over Beethoven,
Roll Over beethoven, dig these rhythm and blues

Whisper In The Night

Whisper in the night
Over silent evening air
Angel´s gown shines white
All at once you´re glad she´s there
Daughter of your dream shine a guiding light for me
For I´ll be here till light
Whisper in the night
Till she has forgiven me

Night turns into gold
So the tide may turn today
Though God gave the world
It´s not mine to throw away
Daughter of your dream shine a guiding light for me
For I´ll be here till light
Whisper in the night
Till she has forgiven me
La da da -- da
Whisper in the night
Till she has forgiven me

Help to face what the day may bring
Angels sing
You were sent to make the night be kind
What will I find

Snowflake bird she came
Taking grey clouds from your door
Face the midnight sun
You have something to live for
Daughter of your dream shine a guiding light for me
For I´ll be here till light
Whisper in the night
Till she has forgiven me
La da da -- da
Whisper in the night
Till she has forgiven me

The Battle Of Marston Moor (July 2nd, 1644)

My Lord King,
You stoop to betray your own people,
And even in the eyes of God,
Do you not relent?
I am therefore bound by no other course
I shall raise an army;
Together we will march against you and your kind,
And every born man will fight to regain his own freedom,
And cleanse his wretched soul.

Manhattan Rumble (49th St. Massacre)

(Instrumental)

Look At Me Now

Someone is waiting, lurking in the trees
The spirit of her is walking back to me
Ah look at me now feeling emotion
Ah look at me now

The King of the castle brought her to her knees
Gave the Salvation Army girl a squeeze
Ah look at me now feeling emotion
Ah look at me now
Look at me now

Now she´s a sallow face
Scattering her lace -- on dewy ground
Ah, I keep searching my head
Now it´s spinning around

Lifting her head, her countenance redeemed
Re-acted the murder by the silver stream
Ah look at me now displaying emotion
Ah look at me now

Look at me now so cold and yet so brave
Weave me some wings to take me to her grave
Ah look at me now feeling emotion
Ah look at me now
Look at me now

Nellie Takes Her Bow

Who thanked the Lord for the clothes
that she wore and mended,
Nellie with the big old fashioned eyes
Who won the heart of a crowd
tore apart, took a bow,
Nellie there´s a different world backstage

(Chorus:)
I see the flood lights burning
I hear the band play on
Now Nellie takes her bow

She said she really could not stay
She had a brand new play to play
And so she paints her face and smiles
And she´ll be someone else in a while

(Chorus)

Just a lonely girl who could not face a broken world,
And so she acts out all her dreams and wishes that´s how it had been
But when the audience is near, it seems as though she doesn´t even care.

(Chorus)

Nellie just sent me a line to tell me she was doing fine
She got the lead and on Broadway, and now they´re digging her today
And as she turns the final page, living
someone´s life upon the stage

(Chorus)

Mr. Radio

Hello, Mr. Radio, you friendly station,
So glad of your company, your morning music,
My wife she ran away, she left our home,
And though you´re here with me, I´m on my own.

Hello, Mr. Radio, you friendly speaker,
You played my request today, request to see her
Your voice comes riding home across the air,
You travel ´round the world, but still you´re here.

I heard on the news today the world is no good,
But if she returns today mine could be so good
I look into the sky, your waves rush by,
The weather man has lied, it makes me cry.

Hello, Mr. Radio, do I disturb you?
Sometimes I forget my place, I seem to know you
I miss you when you close, you´ll never know,
And when your programmes go, I´m on my own.

In Old England Town (Boogie No. 2)

Down, down, you can see them all,
Rising gaily to the top,
Keep on rising babe you know you got a long drop,
You better cling cos it´s the done thing

Down, down, at the Policemans Ball,
They´re all dancing in a line,
Keep on gruntin´ boys you know you´re doin´ fine,
Come quickly I´ve been strangled

Down, down, at the Military,
They´re all marching round and round,
Keep them boots shined and that stiff upper lip down,
Ablution Revolution

Down, down, at the launching pad,
Giant phallus stands erect,
Ten thousand tons of waste throb then eject,
Look out space, we´re gonna change our place

Down, down, in old England Town,
There was air and now there´s smoke,
Let´s build more cars and drive away before we choke,
Suddenly it´s always night time

Down, down, at the nice Trade Fair,
All the money gone astray,
Let´s inflate this place and float away,
Just you and me and everyone

Momma

She came up from the country with a smile for everyone,
She left her blue horizon just to find another home,
A lonely girl who´d travelled many days,
A lonely heart that could not find a way

Chorus

And she said Momma, it´s a hard life now you´re gone,
Momma, it´s so hard to carry on,
And I fell I´m a fool who lost it all,
You used to make it all so very clear
That life must go on though the end is near,
Oh Momma, it´s a sad and lonely life

A misty morin rider she came wanderin through the hills,
A wanderin soul appearin over rainy window sills,
A loser in her heart but in her face,
A smile for everyone under God´s grace

Repeat Chorus

Midnight maiden madness, what to search for in this place,
Gateway to the city, night sky shadows on her face,
A lady lost in nowhere but her stare,
Leaves the world, her life to start somewhere

Repeat Chorus

Kuiama

My my Kuiama, she came in the morning,
She smiled but the tears on her little face
Showed the pain that had been in that far off place,
So sad, treated so bad

My my Kuiama, don´t break your heart tryin´,
To say how your Ma and your Pa passed away,
And they left you to wander the ruin and decay,
Real mean, that bullet machine

See here Kuiama, now ten thousand miles,
Is a long long way and you´re here today,
And you won´t go back so you might say hello,
How do you do

Kuia stop your cryin´, there´s no bombs a´fallin´,
No horsemen in the night a´ridin´ through your dreams,
And tearing at your life, baby goodnight

No more silver rain will hit your ground,
And no more guns will sound and no more life be drowned
No more trenchies where the soldiers lie and,
No more people die, beneath that big black sky

Wake up Kuiama, I got somethin´ to tell you,
It´s just that I mean, well that is to say,
That I´m trying to explain but I´ll start again for you,
I must be true

Kuia in this country, they got rules with no reason,
They teach you to kill and they send you away
With your gun in your hand you pick up your pay,
So cool, that no mercy tool

Kuia please believe me, I just couldn´t help myself,
I wanted to run but they gave me a gun
And they told me the duty I owed to my fatherland,
I made my stand

Kuia I just shot them, I just blew their heads open,
And I heard them scream in their agony,
Kuiama she waits there for me,
True blue, you saw it through

Baby I Apologise

Love my baby in the afternoon,
    but she's crying, crying
Told my baby in the afternoon,
but she don't like it she don't like it
Baby used to love me so

        Baby I apologize
        for telling them dirty lies
I had my fun but now it's done
        Baby I apologize

Love you in the morning in the evening too
But she won't do what I want to
Kicked me out of my own front room
for my lyen' my dirty lyin'

        Baby I apologize
        for telling them dirty lies
I had my fun but now it's done
        Baby I apologize

    You know my darling
    I was a broken man
All my dreams had fell apart
And then a voice from above
Told me the truth of the world we live
And my darling, I'd just like to say one more time
    Please come back

        Baby I apologize
        for telling them dirty lies
I had my fun but now it's done
        Baby I apologize

Love you in the morning in the evening too
But she won't do what I want to
Kicked me out of my own front room
for my lyin' my dirty lyin'
Baby used to love me so

        Baby I apologize
        for telling them dirty lies
I had my fun but now it's done
        Baby I apologize

        Baby I apologize
        for telling them dirty lies
I had my fun but now it's done
        Baby I apologize

10538 Overture

Did you see your friend crying from his eyes today
Did you see him run through the streets and far away
Aah
Did you see him run, did you see him fall
Did his life flash by at the bedroom door

Did you hear the news it came across the air today
Someone has been found on the rocks down in the bay
Ahhh
Did you see him hide, did you see him crawl
Does his life mean more than it did before

Did you see that man running through the streets today
Did you catch his face, was it 10538
Ahhhh
