First Light is the fourth studio album (fifth overall) by Jamaican-American collective Easy Star All-Stars. Unlike their other albums, this is the first album that features original songs by the band.

FIRST LIGHT is the first full-length album of original songs from EASY STAR ALL-STARS. The Easy Star All-Stars have built a huge following around the world, having sold over 350,000 records and played shows in over 30 countries on 6 continents. The band - a collective from the NYC scene overseen by producer/guitarist Michael Goldwasser - has always played original music in its live set, some of which was released on UNTIL THAT DAY, an original EP in 2008. FIRST LIGHT is an important step in the band’s story, demonstrating a wide range of approaches to reggae, from progressive to classic, roots to futurist, confirming the All-Stars place as one of the most influential acts on the US reggae scene. The album includes 12 songs and one dub, with guest appearances by The Meditations, Cas Haley, Junior Jazz, Lady Ann and Tony Tuff.

An album of original material by the NYC posse best known for their skankifications of the rock canon. It's as if they've taken their fancy-dress costumes off and come as themselves. How do they look? Like a supra-competent, glossy roots band with an ear for a melody. Late-period Matumbi spring to mind. Tricky. If this were 1979, we'd be welcoming a new addition to the rootsical middle ground; in 2011, it's as if they've shown up after the party's over. Talented though.

Who are Easy Star All-Stars? Really, by now we should know: Dub Side of the Moon, their acclaimed refashioning of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon is eight years old, plus Radiodread, a tribute to Radiohead’s Ok Computer, and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band – no surprise who that’s a tribute to - aren’t much younger.

And yet it’s taken up until now (the online release of EP Until That Day aside) for listeners to get a stab at pinning down what exactly Easy Star All-Stars might sound like when they’re not rehashing Floyd, Radiohead, and The Beatles. First Light, a 14-track exercise in “Look-we’re-an-original-band-too!”, has been a long time coming.

First Light is not radically different from their other efforts–aside from the fact that the songs here aren’t recognizable songs. “Break of Dawn”, “Universal Law”, and “Unbelievable” are standout tracks; sticking to the reggae and dub sound that’s made Easy Star All-Stars famous, they play around more than other tracks, bouncing from beat to beat in a way that makes you want to jig, while also slipping in some almost doo-wop-ish vocals and playing a little bit with R&B. In fact, while it’d be easy to dismiss First Light as an album that simply took the style of those tribute albums and called it the band’s own, this record is a really strong example of why a band more famed for their ability to mold existing structures should walk into their own territory more often.

Sadly, though, a band that’s made a name for themselves by mimicking others is always going to be compared to those earlier efforts. In that respect, First Light doesn’t quite stand up: First, it’s too long, and secondly, Easy Star All-Stars don’t have the songwriting power of The Beatles, Radiohead, and Pink Floyd. (Who does?) Maybe the problem, then, is that following three excellent and considered parody-cum-tribute albums, the expectation surrounding 14 tracks of original material was always going to be too high–victims of their own credibility, perhaps.

Still, First Light succeeds in being solid and enjoyable, and it’s still worth finding out what Easy Star All-Stars sound like when they’re just being themselves.

After covering the Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Beatles songbooks, Easy Star All-Stars finally get around to their first full-length album of original songs with First Light, a satisfying set of jam band reggae with its feet firmly planted in roots culture. The woozy, nighttime Rasta track “Easy Now Star” with special guests the Meditations is a top-shelf version of the modern roots number, while “All the Way” is lover's rock in a “Breakfast in Bed” style, matching that classic Lorna Bennett tune on the sensuality scale. Smoker’s songs are an easy score for this group, but “One Likkle Draw” is still truly inspired, and when it comes to reggae-pop, “Unbelievable,” with Easy Star Records labelmate Cas Haley, shows how to go sunshine without getting too sugary. The dub stuck on the end of the album is the kind of druggy journey in space you’d expect from this top-notch studio crew, and anyone who has seen the group live will enjoy having plenty of vocals from Joanne Williams and Kirsty Rock for their home and headphones. Fourteen tracks that flow by without a hitch prove that this reggae crew has plenty to offer past the tribute album.
