The Eagles are often reviled as the paragons of white powder-fuelled, egotistical, arrogant West Coast rock, but that's only half the story. Sure, they were the most cynical, money-obsessed part of David Geffen's empire, but they were also musicians of the highest calibre. They took elements of soft country-rock, pin-sharp harmonies and the singer/songwriter as modern day 'outlaw' myth, and sold millions of records. This double disc collection, replete with commentaries on the songs by individual band members, offers up ample evidence of their commercial genius. From their smooth mixing of cowboy chic with the songs of JD Souther and Jackson Browne ("Take It Easy", "The Best Of My Love" etc.) to the high octane, twin axe depictions of a self-obsessed showbiz world ("Life In The Fast Lane", "Hotel California") Don Henley, Glenn Frey et al have proven themselves to be utter pros at delivering the hook-laden goods.

The Very Best Of (released as The Complete Greatest Hits in the UK and Australia) is a two-disc compilation album by the Eagles, released in 2003. This album combines all tracks that appeared on the two previously released Eagles greatest hits albums (Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) & Eagles Greatest Hits, Vol. 2), along with other singles not included on the first two compilations, album tracks and the new track "Hole in the World". The Very Best Of was also released as a limited-edition three-disc set with the third disc being a bonus DVD containing the video for the new song "Hole in the World," as well as a making of the video featurette and "Backstage Pass to Farewell 1." The album debuted on the Billboard 200 on November 8, 2003 at number 3, with 162,000 copies sold. It spent 62 weeks on the chart. The album was certified and awarded gold, platinum, and double platinum records by the RIAA on December 17, 2003, and on December 13, 2004, it achieved triple platinum status. As of December 2007, it has spent over 325 weeks in the Irish Album Charts, effectively not having left the chart since its release. In the UK the album (as The Complete Greatest Hits) entered the charts on November 1, 2003 at its initial number 27 peak position, the album did however re-enter the charts in June 2006 when it peaked at number 9 on the UK Albums Chart.

With a career spanning over four decades The Eagles are among the most successful Rock N Roll acts of all time. The original Eagles compilation, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, remains one of the best-selling records of all time and this updated two CD collection contains all the same hallmarks that made it so successful, with some welcome surprises. The staple recordings remain, with Hotel California the most immediately recognizable, as well as hits like Lyin Eyes and New Kid In Town. Also included is their single Hole In The World, written as a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Like many of The Eagles songs, the difficult and confrontational subject matter is softened by their trademark vocal harmonies

While this superfluous compilation does cover some of the Eagles' most celebrated songs, it can't hold a candle to the band's best-selling disc, Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975). Furthermore, there's nothing truly "complete" about this album, as it leaves off some classic material in favor of such forgettable filler as "Please Come Home for Christmas" and "Hole in the World." Of the Eagles' many hits collections, live albums, and boxed sets, The Complete Greatest Hits isn't the most poorly constructed disc of the bunch, but it still displays an incomplete picture of a band whose catalog deserves better representation.

This packed double-disc is the slim option for fans who find the Eagles' vaunted greatest hits sets too little and the boxed set too hefty. Hit singles large and medium are here, often ("One of These Nights," "Hotel California") still sounding definitive and even tough. Large helpings of favorite album cuts are also included, along with a taster from a promised 2004 Eagles studio reunion. Unfortunately, "Hole in the World," Don Henley's response to September 11, feels just as empty and entitled as "Get Over It," the band's previous state-of-the-union message (from which the newer song represents a philosophical 180-degree turn). But for those seeking an overview of this Southern California juggernaut's successes, as well as telling comments from band members--mostly Henley and Frey--in a well-designed booklet, Very Best will more than do.

"Ich glaube, ich habe gute Ideen und viele Meinungen eingebracht. Sein Beitrag war dagegen die Poesie. Wir waren ein gutes Team", erzählt Glenn Frey über sich und seinen Songwriting-Partner Don Henley. "Gutes Team" klingt dabei deutlich untertrieben. Nicht nur gehören die Eagles zu den beliebtesten Bands überhaupt; die Qualität ihres Liedguts zeigt sich auch an den unverändert hohen Verkaufszahlen, die ihre Platten seit den Siebzigerjahren erzielen.

"Man hält uns immer noch für eine Country-Rock-Band ... letztendlich sind wir jedoch einfach eine amerikanische Band. Wir sind ein Mischmasch aus allen Genres populärer amerikanischer Musik", erklärt Henley im ausführlichen Booklet zu dieser Veröffentlichung. Wie sich ihr Stil anhört, ist bei den hier vertretenen 33 Stücken gut herauszuhören. Erst einmal die Harmonien, die an das Vorbild Poco und die Beach Boys erinnern. Dann ein geradliniges Schlagzeug im 4/4-Takt (Henley muss hinter den Trommeln ja auch noch singen) und eine rockige Rhythmusgitarre, die Frey als Basis für einige geniale Soli dient. Klassischer Rock also, an dem im Gegensatz zu Südstaatencombos wie Lynyrd Skynyrd oder Allman Brothers nicht der Staub der Prärie haftet, sondern eher der Hochglanz der besseren Viertel von Los Angeles.

In der vorliegenden Sammlung sind alle Alben der Eagles vertreten, zusätzlich gibt es zwei Lieder, die nur als Singles auf den Markt kamen. Dabei befinden sich die besten Stücke auf der ersten CD. Ob es sich um ihren Erstling handelt, das mit Jackson Browne geschriebene "Take It Easy", oder die Ballade "Desperado", der Johnny Cash letztes Jahr neues Leben einhauchte, "Tequila Sunrise" oder "Ol'55" des damals noch unbekannten Tom Waits - Henleys melancholische Stimme und Freys wirksame Arrangements passen perfekt zusammen und erzeugen eine behagliche Atmosphäre.

Der unglaubliche Erfolg ihres 1975 erschienenen "Best Of" schlägt sich in den folgenden Jahren auf die Zusammenarbeit nieder. Der Perfektionismus bei Komposition und Aufnahme nimmt überhand und führt zu Ermüdungserscheinungen. "After The Thrill Is Gone" aus der 76er LP "One Of These Nights" ist nach eigenen Angaben durchaus wörtlich zu verstehen. Allen Spannungen zum Trotz steht der Höhepunkt ihres Schaffens jedoch erst bevor: Das sechsminütige "Hotel California", dessen Entstehungsprozess und Bedeutung noch heute Kritiker und Fans beschäftigen, ist nicht nur ihr bekanntestes Stück, sondern auch ihr vielschichtigstes. "You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave" singt Henley über sich und die Gesellschaft, in der er lebt.

Auf dem 76er Album mit dem gleichen Namen befinden sich auch die einfühlsame Ballade "The Last Resort" und das schnellere "New Kid In Town". Dann kommt außer der fragwürdigen Weihnachtssingle "Please Come Home For Christmas" eine Schaffenspause, die 1978 mit "The Long Run" endet. Zwar soll der Titel mitteilen, dass Eagles noch lange weitermachen wollen, außer dem rockigen "Heartache Tonight" kann das Material jedoch nicht an den vergangenen Glanz anknüpfen. Kein Wunder also, dass sie sich nach dem Doppelalbum "Eagles Live", hier vertreten durch "Seven Bridges Road", auflösen.

Erstaunlicherweise begeben sie sich 1994 wieder ins Studio, um "Hell Freezes Over" aufzunehmen. Das Ergebnis fällt ernüchternd aus: Neben dem von Jim Capaldi und Paul Carrack geschriebenen "Love Will Keep Us Alive" ist hier nur "Get Over It" vertreten, das zwar einen Neuanfang des Songschreiberduos darstellen soll, wie sie selbst zugeben aber kaum ihr bestes Stück ist. Dass Frey und Henley dennoch gut miteinander auskommen beweist die Tatsache, dass sie seitdem öfters mal auf Tour gehen und vor allem in den USA für Zuschauerrekorde sorgen.

Die Aufnahmen zu einer neuen Platte sind scheinbar schon abgeschlossen. Das neue Album soll 2004 auf einem eigenen Label erscheinen. Nach Henleys Angaben hatten sie schon vor drei Jahren ein Studio gebucht, den Termin aber auf den schicksalhaften 11. September 2001 gelegt. Aus der Session wurde zunächst nichts, dafür inspirierten die Anschläge in New York und Washington Henley zu "Hole In The World", dem letzten Lied dieser Zusammenstellung. Neben der Angewohnheit des Schlagzeugers, seine Gedanken über Gott und die Welt kund zu tun, nervt an dem Stück vor allem der Mangel an musikalischen Ideen: Der Beat hört sich an wie vom Computer, die Stellen mit Acapella-Gesang nach den Bemühungen einer Boygroup.

Die Eagles haben solch eine harsche Kritik jedoch nicht verdient. Vor dreißig Jahren waren sie so kreativ, dass ihnen auch der gegenwärtige Erfolg immer noch zusteht. Selbst wenn sie mit "The Complete Greatest Hits" schon die dritte Sammlung dieser Art vorlegen: Sie enthält nicht nur gute Musik, sondern überzeugt auch durch die schöne Gestaltung und das dicke Booklet, in dem Frey und Henley zu jedem Stück etwas erzählen.
