The Doors' third album showed the band in transition, even as "Hello, I
Love You" became the Doors' second number-1 hit. The band's songs set
Morrison's poetic and often bizarre lyrical imagery against Krieger's
bluesy guitar and the spiraling keyboards of Manzarek. Their chart
success, however, alienated them from their original audience, who no
longer considered them "underground" enough, while their concert
audiences increasingly consisted of teenage girls, drawn by Morrison's
sexy performing style. "Hello, I Love You" pushed them firmly into the
rock mainstream.
The Doors' 1967 albums had raised expectations so high that their third
effort was greeted as a major disappointment. With a few exceptions,
the material was much mellower, and while this yielded some fine
melodic ballad rock in "Love Street," "Wintertime Love," "Summer's
Almost Gone," and "Yes, the River Knows," there was no denying that the
songwriting was not as impressive as it had been on the first two
records. On the other hand, there were first-rate tunes such as the
spooky "The Unknown Soldier," with antiwar lyrics as uncompromisingly
forceful as anything the band did, and the compulsively riff-driven
"Hello, I Love You," which nonetheless bore an uncomfortably close
resemblance to the Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night." The flamenco
guitar of "Spanish Caravan," the all-out weirdness of "Not to Touch the
Earth" (which was a snippet of a legendary abandoned opus, "The
Celebration of the Lizard"), and the menacing closer "Five to One" were
also interesting. In fact, time's been fairly kind to the record, which
is quite enjoyable and diverse, just not as powerful a full-length
statement as the group's best albums.

This was the album which was due to feature "Celebration Of The Lizard"
- Jim Morrison's eagerly-awaited 10-minute poem written in tribute to
said sexy reptile. Alas though, it wasn't to be. Instead they inserted
less ambitious oldie "Hello I Love You" at the last minute and hoped
that no-one would mind. Unsurprisingly, it sticks out like a sore thumb
on a set which represents the peak of Jim Morrison's belief that he was
some kind of leather-trousered shaman. Were this not a 60s rock group,
such acts of narcotic delusion might signal disaster. Narcotic delusion
though, was what 60s rock groups did best--and here's an album full of
it: the elegiac piano inflections that frame "Yes The River Knows"; the
warped, disembodied "Not To Touch The Earth" and that oft-overlooked
pagan sea-shanty "My Wild Love". Indeed, only "The Unknown Soldier" and
"Five To One" serve to remind the listener that this was an album
recorded at the peak of the Vietnam war - the latter lyric, of
course, spawning the title of Morrison's best-selling biography No-One
Here Gets Out Alive.

With the massive success of the single "Light My Fire" and their
initial two albums, L.A.'s the Doors quickly built a sizable reputation
for edgy, often over-the-top musical drama. Perhaps wary of
stereotyping, or simply worn out from their grueling early success, the
band took a decided left turn into softer sounds here, from the
pop-drenched "Hello, I Love You" to the flamenco guitar wash of
"Spanish Caravan." Even gentle ballads (by the band's standards,
anyway) were a part of the Doors' new sensibility, as witnessed by
"Love Street" and "Summer's Almost Gone." But lest one think the band
had gone a little too soft, the antiwar diatribe "The Unknown Soldier,"
the edgy "Five to One," and the deliciously strange "Not to Touch the
Earth" were there to remind listeners that even if the band had
mellowed a bit, they were still a long way from Jay and the Americans.
Hello, I love you
Won't you tell me your name?
Hello, I love you
Let me jump in your game
Hello, I love you
Won't you tell me your name?
Hello, I love you
Let me jump in your game
She's walking down the street
Blind to every eye she meets
Do you think you'll be the guy
To make the queen of the angels sigh?
Hello, I love you
Won't you tell me your name?
Hello, I love you
Let me jump in your game
Hello, I love you
Won't you tell me your name?
Hello, I love you
Let me jump in your game
She holds her head so high
Like a statue in the sky
Her arms are wicked, and her legs are long
When she moves my brain screams out this song
Sidewalk crouches at her feet
Like a dog that begs for something sweet
Do you hope to make her see, you fool?
Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel?
Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello
I want you
Hello
I need my baby
Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello
Love Street
She lives on Love Street
Lingers long on Love Street
She has a house and garden
I would like to see what happens
She has robes and she has monkeys
Lazy diamond studded flunkies
She has wisdom and knows what to do
She has me and she has you
She has wisdom and knows what to do
She has me and she has you
I see you live on Love Street
There's this store where the creatures meet
I wonder what they do in there
Summer Sunday and a year
I guess I like it fine, so far
She lives on Love Street
Lingers long on Love Street
She has a house and garden
I would like to see what happens
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
Not To Touch The Earth
Not to touch the earth
Not to see the sun
Nothing left to do, but
Run, run, run
Let's run
Let's run
House upon the hill
Moon is lying still
Shadows of the trees
Witnessing the wild breeze
C'mon baby run with me
Let's run
Run with me
Run with me
Run with me
Let's run
The mansion is warm, at the top of the hill
Rich are the rooms and the comforts there
Red are the arms of luxuriant chairs
And you won't know a thing till you get inside
Dead president's corpse in the driver's car
The engine runs on glue and tar
Come on along, not goin' very far
To the East to meet the Czar
Run with me
Run with me
Run with me
Let's run
Whoa!
Some outlaws lived by the side of a lake
The minister's daughter's in love with the snake
Who lives in a well by the side of the road
Wake up, girl, we're almost home
Ya, c'mon!
We should see the gates by mornin'
We should be inside the evenin'
Sun, sun, sun
Burn, burn, burn
Soon, soon, soon
Moon, moon, moon
I will get you
Soon!
Soon!
Soon!
I am the Lizard King
I can do anything
Summer's Almost Gone
Summer's almost gone
Summer's almost gone
Almost gone
Yeah, it's almost gone
Where will we be
When the summer's gone?
Morning found us calmly unaware
Noon burn gold into our hair
At night, we swim the laughin' sea
When summer's gone
Where will we be
Where will we be
Where will we be
Morning found us calmly unaware
Noon burn gold into our hair
At night, we swim the laughin' sea
When summer's gone
Where will we be
Summer's almost gone
Summer's almost gone
We had some good times
But they're gone
The winter's comin' on
Summer's almost gone
Wintertime Love
Wintertime winds blow cold the season
Fallen in love, I'm hopin' to be
Wind is so cold, is that the reason?
Keeping you warm, your hands touching me
Come with me dance, my dear
Winter's so cold this year
You are so warm
My wintertime love to be
Winter time winds blue and freezin'
Comin' from northern storms in the sea
Love has been lost, is that the reason?
Trying desperately to be free
Come with me dance, my dear
Winter's so cold this year
And you are so warm
My wintertime love to be
La, la, la, la
Come with me dance, my dear
Winter's so cold this year
You are so warm
My wintertime love to be
The Unknown Soldier
Wait until the war is over
And we're both a little older
The unknown soldier
Breakfast where the news is read
Television children fed
Unborn living, living, dead
Bullet strikes the helmet's head
And it's all over
For the unknown soldier
It's all over
For the unknown soldier
Hut
Hut
Hut ho hee up
Hut
Hut
Hut ho hee up
Hut
Hut
Hut ho hee up
Comp'nee
Halt
Preeee-zent!
Arms!
Make a grave for the unknown soldier
Nestled in your hollow shoulder
The unknown soldier
Breakfast where the news is read
Television children fed
Bullet strikes the helmet's head
And, it's all over
The war is over
It's all over
The war is over
Well, all over, baby
All over, baby
Oh, over, yeah
All over, baby
Wooooo, hah-hah
All over
All over, baby
Oh, woa-yeah
All over
All over
Heeeeyyyy
Spanish Caravan
Carry me Caravan take me away
Take me to Portugal, take me to Spain
Andalusia with fields full of grain
I have to see you again and again
Take me, Spanish Caravan
Yes, I know you can
Trade winds find Galleons lost in the sea
I know where treasure is waiting for me
Silver and gold in the mountains of Spain
I have to see you again and again
Take me, Spanish Caravan
Yes, I know you can
My Wild Love
My wild love went ridin'
She rode all the day
She wrote to the devil
And asked him to pay
The devil was wiser
It's time to repent
He asked her to give back
The money she spent
My wild love went ridin'
She rode to the sea
She gathered together
Some shells for her head
She rode and she rode on
She rode for a while
Then stopped for an evenin'
And lay her head down
She rode on to Christmas
She rode to the farm
She rode to Japan
And we entered a town
By this time the river
Had changed one degree
She asked for the people
To let her go free
My wild love is crazy
She screams like a bird
She moans like a cat
When she wants to be heard
My wild love went ridin'
She rode for an hour
She rode and she rested
And then she rode on
Ride, c'mon
We Could Be So Good Together
We could be so good together
Ya, so good together
We could be so good together
Ya, we could, I know we could
Tell you lies
I tell you wicked lies
Tell you lies
Tell you wicked lies
Tell you 'bout the world that we'll invent
Wanton world without lament
Enterprise, expedition
Invitation and invention
Ya, so good together
Ah, so good together
We could be so good together
Ya, we could, know we could
Alright!
Do da do do do do do bup bup de day
We could be so good together
Ya, so good together
We could be so good together
Ya, we could, know we could
Tell you lies
Tell you wicked lies
Tell you lies
Tell you wicked lies
The time you wait subtracts the joy
Beheads the angels you destroy
Angels fight, angels cry
Angels dance and angels die
Ya, so good together
Ah, but so good together
We could be so good together
Ya, we could, know we could
Yes, The River Knows
Please believe me
The river told me
Very softly
Want you to hold me, ooo
Free fall flow, river flow
On and on it goes
Breath under water 'till the end
Free fall flow, river flow
On and on it goes
Breath under water 'till the end
Yes, the river knows
Please believe me
If you don't need me
I'm going, but I need a little time
I promised I would drown myself in mysticated wine
Please believe me
The river told me
Very softly
Want you to hold me, ooo
I'm going, but I need a little time
I promised I would drown myself in mysticated wine
Free fall flow, river flow
On and on it goes
Breath under water 'till the end
Free fall flow, river flow
On and on it goes
Breath under water 'till the end
Five To One
Yeah, c'mon
Love my girl
She lookin' good
C'mon
One more
Five to one, baby
One in five
No one here gets out alive, now
You get yours, baby
I'll get mine
Gonna make it, baby
If we try
The old get old
And the young get stronger
May take a week
And it may take longer
They got the guns
But we got the numbers
Gonna win, yeah
We're takin' over
Come on!
Yeah!
Your ballroom days are over, baby
Night is drawing near
Shadows of the evening crawl across the years
Ya walk across the floor with a flower in your hand
Trying to tell me no one understands
Trade in your hours for a handful dimes
Gonna' make it, baby, in our prime
Come together one more time
Get together one more time
Get together one more time
Get together, aha
Get together one more time!
Get together one more time!
Get together one more time
Get together one more time
Get together, gotta, get together
Ohhhhhhhh!
Hey, c'mon, honey
You won't have along wait for me, baby
I'll be there in just a little while
You see, I gotta go out in this car with these people and...
Get together one more time
Get together one more time
Get together, got to
Get together, got to
Get together, got to
Take you up in my room and...
Hah-hah-hah-hah-hah
Love my girl
She lookin' good, lookin' real good
Love ya, c'mon
