Life for Rent doesn't offer anything that drastically different from
Dido's debut album, No Angel — the dance beats are marginally
fresher, the production is clean and new — but this
predictibility is actually rather refreshing because the album delivers
on its promise, unlike many sophomore affairs in 2003. That its promise
is rather modest doesn't really matter, since Dido is successful at
modest songs. She has a sweet, warm voice and a knack for tuneful
modern folk-pop that sounds intimate while being confidently catchy and
nicely atmospheric. In other words, it retains the feel of No Angel and
its two big hits, "Here With Me" and "Thank You," without ever
rewriting either song, but contributing songs like "White Flag,"
"Stoned," "Life for Rent," and "Do You Have a Little Time," which are
nearly as memorable. The appeal of Life for Rent is what makes Dido
appealing — she's unassuming and gentle, but her songs are so
melodic and atmospheric they easily work their way into the
subconscious, and the records are well-crafted enough to be engaging on
repeated plays. So, Life for Rent isn't much different than its
predecessor, but that's a very good thing in this case.
Her solo debut, No Angel -- abetted by her appearance on Eminem's
"Stan" -- made this moody British songstress one of the most surprising
entrants into pop's multi-platinum club. It's taken her a few years to
come to terms with taking the next step, but Life for Rent is a
confident stride forward for Dido, as evidenced by the lush
orchestrations of the opening "White Flag." That song, colored in the
bruised tones of a still-fresh breakup, sets the mood, which revolves,
by and large, around Dido's split with her longtime beau. She flits
between relief and regret, stepping gingerly into the former emotion on
the album's sole up-tempo number, "Sand in My Shoes," and falling into
the latter on the sparse title track and the rest of the album.
Following No Angel, most of Life for Rent's melodies were constructed
by the singer's brother, Rollo Armstrong (of the dance-pop duo
Faithless). He matches her musings with airy whoosh and a dash of
techno-folk, hitting nerves particularly with the obsessive "Don't
Leave Home." Dido's fondness for hazy ambience is generally a positive
influence, but on occasion -- the appropriately titled "Stoned," for
instance -- she all but disappears behind the veil of swirling synths
and lackadaisical rhythms. For the most part, however, Life for Rent
gives the singer enough room to brood -- and offers the listener enough
incentive to climb into its darker chambers to join her.

Für ihr erstes Album NO ANGEL wurde sie mit mehreren Brit-, World
Music- und Grammy Awards ausgezeichnet! In Deutschland erhielt sie den
Echo. Weltweit wurden über 12 Mio Alben verkauft! DIDO trägt
den Titel "Best Selling Female Artist Of The Year 2001"! Nun ist sie
endlich zurück: DIDO mit ihrem langersehnten neuen Album LIFE FOR
RENT. "When I make a record, all I'm ever trying to do is make
something I want to listen to" sagt Dido in einem Rolling Stone
LIFE

Mit ihrem Debütalbum No Angel gelang Dido Armstrong 1999 - dank
Entsprechend gelöst klingen viele der Songs auf Life For Rent
auch. Dido musste sich selbst nichts mehr beweisen. Die perfekte
Voraussetzung also, erneut vollkommen unbeschwert auszuspielen.
einfügen wollen, so zum Beispiel "See You When You're 40" oder die
klassische Downbeat-Ballade "Do You Have A Little Time".

dynamischen Effekten.

Eminem's "Stan" and the soundtrack to TV's Roswell gave Dido the
exposure that proves how pop with a little depth can outsell
cookie-cutter crap if people get the chance to hear it. Like No Angel,
her 1999 debut, Life for Rent isn't groundbreaking, but it has its own
kind of integrity. The smooth-voiced Brit has been singing achingly
over lush synths in her brother Rollo's club-music act Faithless since
1995, and their continued collaboration prevents the usual second-album
slump. It also helps that she has experienced some heartbreak with her
12 million sales, having split with her longtime fiance last year. The
resulting album packs messier emotional complications than its
predecessor: When she admits, "I'm in love and always will be," on
"White Flag," it's after having struggled and lost -- and in this case,
her loss is our gain.
I know you think that I shouldn't still love you,
I'll tell you that.
But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it
where's the sense in that?
I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were
Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
I know I left too much mess and
destruction to come back again
And I caused but nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of "it's over"
then I'm sure that that makes sense
Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
And when we meet
Which I'm sure we will
All that was then
Will be there still
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on....
Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
TONED
When you're stoned, baby, I am drunk
We make love seems a little dazzler
It's hard sometimes not to look away
And think what's the point when I'm having to hold this fine time
I think I'll explode if I can't feel this free now
[Chorus:]
If you won't let me fall for you
Then you won't see the best things I would love to do for you
Instead you will be missing me when I go
As I want to hang it out in your coat
I feel love baby, joy in the road
And the world moves with me
I feel love start just slip away silently
Quietly take the things and go
And think what's the point, think where's the hope when coming home
[Chorus]
And if you find one day, find some freedom merrily
With this freedom maybe, maybe you will find some peace
With this peace baby, I hope it brings you back to me
Bring you home, take me home
[Chorus]
Oh, take me home
Oh, take me home
When you're stoned, baby, take me home
Oh...
LIFE FOR RENT
I haven't really ever found a place that I call home
I never stick around quite long enough to make it
I apologize that once again I'm not in love
But it's not as if I mind
that your heart ain't exactly breaking
It's just a thought, only a thought
But if my life is for rent and I don't lean to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
I've always thought
that I would love to live by the sea
To travel the world alone
and live my life more simply
I have no idea what's happened to that dream
Cos there's really nothing left here to stop me
It's just a thought, only a thought
But if my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
While my heart is a shield and I won't let it down
While I am so afraid to fail so I won't even try
Well how can I say I'm alive
If my life is for rent...
MARY'S IN INDIA
Danny is lonely
Mary's in India now
She said she'd call but that was three weeks ago
She left all her things well, her books and her letters from him
But as the sun rises on Mary sets on him
And just dance, and just drink
And just see the things I probably never get the chance to see
Danny's not eating, he's drinking and sleeping
I saw him last night at party, he's definitely thin
He says he's happy, look pretty good
But I think
That as the sun rises on Mary sets on him
And just dance, and just drink
And just see the things I probably never get the chance to say
Danny came over last night and I cooked for him
He talked about you Mary and how much we loved you still
He told me he's packed up your books and your letters and things
But as the sun sets on Mary, it's rising on him
And we danced, and we drank
And I've seen something you probably never got the chance to see
Don't worry, Mary
Cause I'm taking care of Danny
And he's taking care of me
SEE YOU WHEN YOU'RE 40
I've driven round in circles for three hours
It was bound to happen that I'd end up at your
I temporarily forgot there's better days to come
I thought that I would give it just one more chance
Cos' I want, tonight, what I've been waiting for
But I found, tonight, what I'd been warned about
You think that you are complicated, deep mystery to all
Well it's taken me a while to see, you're not so special
All energy no meaning, with a lot of words
So paper thin that one real feeling, could knock you down
And I've seen, tonight, what I'd been warned about
I'm gonna leave, tonight, before I change my mind
So see me when your 40, lost and all alone
being comforted by strangers you'll never need to know
not sad because you lost me
but sad because you thought it was cool to be sad
You think misery will make you stand apart from the crowd
well if you had walked past me today I wouldn't have picked you out
I wouldn't have picked you out
now I've seen, tonight, how I could waste my time
and I'll be on my way, and I won't be back
cos I've seen, tonight, what I've been warned about
your just a boy, not a man, and I'm not coming back
DON'T LEAVE HOME
Like a ghost don't need a key
Your best friend I've come to be
Please don't think of getting up for me
You don't even need to speak
When I've been here for just one day
You'll already miss me if I go away
So close the blinds and shut the door
You won't need other friends anymore
Oh don't leave home, oh don't leave home
If you're cold I'll keep you warm
If you're low just hold on
Cause I will be your safety
Oh don't leave home
And I arrived when you were weak
I'll make you weaker, weaker still
Now all your love you give to me
When your heart is all I need
Oh don't leave home, oh don't leave home
If you're cold I'll keep you warm
If you're low just hold on
Cause I will be your safety
Oh don't leave home
Oh how quiet, quiet the world can be
When it's just you and little me
Everything is clear and everything is new
So you won't be leaving will you
Oh don't leave home, oh don't leave home
If you're cold I'll keep you warm
If you're low just hold on
Cause I will be your safety
Oh don't leave home
WHO MAKES YOU FEEL
I don't touch you the way I used to
I don't call and write ??
We don't make love as often as we did do
??
But listen and think when I say it
Oh but listen and think when I say it
Who makes you feel the way that I make you feel
Who loves you and knows you the way I do
Who touches you and holds you quite like I do
Who makes you feel like I make you feel
I don't mind if you come home late
I don't ever ask you where you've been
I just assume there's a problem will you tell me
But listen and think when I say it
Oh but listen and think when I say it
Who makes you feel the way that I make you feel
Who loves you and knows you the way I do
Who touches you and holds you quite like I do
Who makes you feel like I make you feel
Who makes you feel like I make you feel
Who makes you feel like I make you feel
Being weak when I am strong
Being seen, who you are
Being sad and love's not alone
But listen and think when I say it
Oh but listen and think when I say it
Who makes you feel the way that I make you feel
Who loves you and knows you the way I do
Who touches you and holds you quite like I do
Who makes you feel like I make you feel
SAND IN MY SHOES
Two weeks away it feels like the world should've changed
But I'm home now
And things still look the same
I think I'll leave it to tomorrow till unpack
Try to forget for one more night
That I'm back in my flat on the road
Where the cars never stop going through the night
To real life where I can't watch sunset
I don't have time
I don't have time
[Chorus:]
I've still got sand in my shoes
And I can't shake the thought of you
I shake it all, forget you
Why, why would I want to
I know we said goodbye
Anything else would've been confused but I wanna see you again
Tomorrow's back to work down to sanitation
should've run back ?? before I left here
Try to Mama show her that I was happy here
Before I knew that I could get on the plane and fly away
From the road where the cars never stop going through the night
To real life where I can't watch sunset
And take my time
Take up our time
[Chorus]
I wanna see you again
Two weeks away, all it takes to change in time around by falling
I walked away and never said that I wanted to see again
[Chorus x2]
I wanna see you again
I wanna see you again
DO YOU HAVE A LITTLE TIME
If you're feeling low and lost today
You're probably doing too much again
You spend all your hours just rushing around
Do you have a little time
Do you have a little time for me?
Slow down my love you're confusing me
If you're feeling stressed just try calling
You spend your time waiting for anyone to see
Do you have a little time
Do you have a little time for me?
If you should stop for a while
You will find me standing by
Over here at the side of your life
I'd like to hold you still, remind you of all you've missed
If you have a little time
If you have a little time that is
Why do you still run when you could walk with me
Life will pass you by when you move as quickly
What can you see when you're spinning around
Do you have a little time
Do you have a little time for me
If you should stop for a while
You will find me standing by
Over here at the side of your life
I like to hold you still, remind you of all you've missed
If you have a little time
If you have a little time that is
If you let me listen I'll make you feel clear
You spend your time waiting for anyone to see
If you should stop for a while
You will find me standing by
Over here at the side of your life
I'd like to hold you still, remind you of all you've missed
If you have a little time
If you have a little time that is
If you should stop for a while
You will find me standing by
Over here at the side of your life
I'd like to hold you still, remind you of all you've missed
If you have a little time
If you have a little time that is
THIS LAND IS MINE
From behind these walls I hear your song
Oh, sweet words
The music that you play lights up my world
The sweetest that I’ve heard
Could it be that I’ve been touched and turned
Oh Lord, please finally…finally things are changing
[Chorus:]
This land is mine but I’ll let you rule
I let you navigate and demand
Just as long as you know…this land is mine
So find your home and settle in
Ohhh, I’m ready to let you in
Just as long as we know…this land is mine
After all the battles and the wars
The scars and loss
I’m still the queen of my domain
and feeling stronger now
The walls are down a little more each day
Since you came, finally…finally things are changing
[Chorus]
Follow the days I’ve travelled alone
In this cold and colorless place till now
It’s what I had to pay
[Chorus]
This land is mine and I let you rule
I let you navigate on demand
Just as long as you know…this land is mine
SEE THE SUN
I'm comin' 'round to open the blinds
You can't hide here any longer
My God you need to rinse those puffy eyes
You can't last here any longer
And yes they'll ask you where you've been
And you'll have to tell them again and again
And you probably don't want to hear tomorrow's another day
Well I promise you you'll see the sun again
And you're asking me why pain's the only way to happiness
And I promise you you'll see the sun again
Come on take my hand
We're going for a walk, I know you can
You can wear anything as long as it's not black
Please don't mourn forever
She's not coming back
And yes they'll ask you where you've been
And you'll have to tell them again and again
And you probably don't want to hear tomorrow's another day
Well I promise you you'll see the sun again
And you're asking me why pain's the only way to happiness
And I promise you you'll see the sun again
And I promise you you'll see the sun again
Do you remember telling me you found the sweetest thing of all
You said one day this was worth dying for
So be thankful you knew her at all
But it's no more
And you probably don't want to hear tomorrow's another day
Well I promise you you'll see the sun again
And you're asking me why pain's the only way to happiness
And I promise you you'll see the sun again
And I promise you you'll see the sun again
And I promise you you'll see the sun again
And I promise you you'll see the sun again
I promise you you'll see the sun again
See the sun again
See the sun again
See the sun again
See the sun again
See the sun again
See the sun again
See the sun again
See the sun again
