Recorded in 1984–1993 at Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum, Netherlands, Rainbow Studios and Olympiahalle in Munich, Germany, Bow Lane Studios and Joe's Garage in Dublin, Ireland.

Retro Active is an album by British hard rock band Def Leppard, released in 1993. The album features touched-up versions of B-sides and previously unreleased recordings from the band's recording sessions between 1984 and 1993. The album charted at number 9 on The Billboard 200[5] and #6 on the UK Albums Chart.

After releasing only four albums over the course of a decade, Def Leppard used Retro Active to break that habit, provide a treat for diehard fans, and close the door on the "Steve Clark" era of the band. It reached platinum sales in many countries. Although many tracks were found on single releases, some parts were re-recorded on the road during the Adrenalize tour. Two unfinished songs from the Hysteria recording sessions, "Desert Song" and "Fractured Love", were completed exclusively for the album. "Two Steps Behind", an acoustic ballad originally recorded in electric version, was given strings by conductor Michael Kamen and included onto the Last Action Hero soundtrack. It would become the band's last Top 20 single in the US, reaching #12. The album also had covers, Sweet's "Action" (which charted higher than the original in the UK) and Mick Ronson's "Only After Dark". Although guitarist Phil Collen had written "Miss You in a Heartbeat", it was released first on the self-titled 1991 debut by The Law, a band featuring Paul Rodgers and The Who drummer Kenney Jones. The version of "Ride into the Sun" is not the version that appeared on The Def Leppard E.P., but rather the 1987 re-recording. It differs slightly from the version of the recording used as a B-side in the Hysteria era, though. The one used as a B-side had a Rick Allen drum solo intro, whereas this one has a piano intro. Retro Active features a hidden (final) track: a piano/vocal version of "Miss You in a Heartbeat". This is the first Def Leppard album to feature songs recorded with newly added guitarist Vivian Campbell.

The album cover, by Nels Israelson and Hugh Syme, is a photograph a lady sitting at a dressing table, looking in a mirror. However, if the cover is viewed at arm's length or from a distance, it takes the form of a skull (a type of vanitas art), the woman's head forming the left eye socket, and her reflected head in the mirror forming the right eye socket. The mirror itself forms the shape of the skull and the accessories on the dressing table form the nose, nostrils and teeth. It was inspired by Charles Allan Gilbert's most famous work, All Is Vanity (1892).

Retro Active is a collection of outtakes and leftovers spanning Def Leppard's entire career. Kicking off the disc, "Desert Song" and "Fractured Love" are two of its most distinctive tracks, harkening back to the band's early (pre-success) days with their rough power chords. After paying homage to some of their heroes with a set of covers (Sweet's "Action" and Mick Ronson's "Only After Dark"), the band tackles a couple of solid, but hardly groundbreaking ballads -- "Two Steps Behind" and "Miss You in a Heartbeat" -- before stretching out (with mixed results) on the folky "From the Inside." Taken from the Hysteria sessions, the classy "I Wanna Be Your Hero" is another pleasant surprise, and the band reaches all the way back to the beginning by re-recording their first demo "Ride into the Sun." Overall, this is an interesting release which marks the end of a long chapter in the band's history, following the death of guitarist and guiding force Steve Clark. While casual fans might find it confusing, Leppard fanatics will revel in its diversity and informative liner notes.

The Who's Odds and Sods proved that reviewing the footnotes and marginalia of a band's back pages could excite more than just a handful of cultists. Serving up 13 B sides, rarities and covers (with some remixing and rerecording), Def Leppard's Retro Active is a cheeky twist on the strategy. Def Lep's five-album canon hardly rivals the Who's venerable history — but Retro Active is a powerful package nonetheless. Fanatic perfectionism has helped Def Leppard sell 35 million albums. It's no surprise then that their closet cleansing divulges no dirty laundry — no jams or coy experiments. For the megaplatinum sheen of the band's Hysteria and Adrenalize, however, Retro substitutes a rougher texture. Sweet's "Action" and Mick Ronson's "Only After Dark" render the group's '70s roots, and glitter-rock's high-voltage pop sounds as fresh as ever in the hands of these heirs. Of the originals, "From the Inside," with members of Hothouse Flowers on mandolin, tin whistle and piano, departs furthest from the band's usual style: It's revved-up folk rock with dark anti-drug lyrics.

Otherwise, this is standard Lep — and that standard is high. Again, they remind us — with the E-bow guitar and percussive intro to "Fractured Love," the elegant acoustic guitar set inside the electric guitar assault of "I Wanna Be Your Hero" — of their passion for detail. And with Joe Elliott's supple voice, the crafty guitars of Phil Collen, Vivian Campbell and the late Steve Clark and the band's trademark harmony vocals, they reassert their musicianship. But their chief strength has always been the songs they write, and Retro Active underscores that appeal. From the Zeplike "Desert Song" to "She's Too Tough" and its feisty rock & roll, from the power ballad "Two Steps Behind" to "Ride Into the Sun," a raver from their 1979 debut, this is premium pop-metal — sharp hooks and engaging thunder.

Summary: A pleasant surprise, this collection of B-Sides and tidbits uses relatively organic production and a wise balance of song types to its advantage.

Compilations containing B-Sides and other tidbits are often – practically by definition – such a mixed bag that they fail to flow cohesively… No matter how great the artist is. The format typically favors certain performers over others, with those bands prone to experimentation usually having some hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. Def Leppard are not that kind of band and since it took them nine years to make their previous two albums, such a release was merely seen as a way to technically avoid making their devoted fanbase wait so long for another album. How pleasantly surprising it is then, to discover that ‘Retro Active’ is actually a very good LP that stands well on its own.

Initial signs are unimpressive with the opening ‘Desert Song’ being an unsuccessful attempt at an atmospheric five minute epic that is only distinguished by a half-decent solo. The following ‘Fractured Love’ then begins atypically sparse with only marching-band like drums, faint hints of guitar and Joe Elliott’s whispered vocals for two minutes, before morphing into a solid, if disappointingly unimaginative, cut. Thankfully, any doubts as to the appeal of ‘Retro Active’ are soon put to rest as the album literally explodes into (pardon the pun) action.

For a portion of their career, it seemed that Def Leppard were attempting to distance themselves from the glam scene, which their sound had occasionally hinted at. At the very least, their personal taste for the scene is confirmed here with two covers both falling under that category. The first is of Sweet’s classic; ‘Action’. From its excellent beginning consisting of near-perfectly produced layered guitars, to the involving sing-along chorus, the English quintet hit the spot here and add just enough of their own slant to make this a resounding success. Mick Ronson’s ‘Only After Dark’ is also given the Def Leppard treatment, if not quite as successfully.

From the mid 80s to early 90s, Def Leppard practically perfected the power ballad. Tracks such as ‘Love Bites’, ‘Hysteria’ and ‘Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad’ drew in fans by the masses. However, the band realized that they couldn’t exactly fill ‘Hysteria’ and ‘Adrenalize’ with such cuts, resulting in a couple of excellent left-overs appearing here.

Containing a chorus which is sure to be ingrained into minds long after it is heard, ‘Two Steps Behind’ – an acoustic strings-assisted ballad which was used in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ‘Last Action Hero’ film – showcases the fantastic interplay between Elliott and the backing vocals, a trait which has become one of the major attributes of the band. Furthermore, the Phil Collen penned piano ballad ‘Miss You In A Heartbeat’, will also tug at the emotional heart-strings, even if some listeners could find it a touch too corny due to the background “woo woos” in its chorus.

As with most compilations of this kind, there is usually one revelation that comes from out of left field and borderline shocks listeners. In the case of ‘Retro Active’, it is track 9 ‘From The Inside’. A folky piece which is brilliantly put together, the cut contains unconventional instruments such as a mandolin, a grand piano and even a tin whistle! Written from the perspective of an addictive drug, lyrics such as “I’ll mess up your life, I’ll beat up your wife, I’ll lose all your friends and I’ll win in the end”, are masterfully delivered by Elliott’s impeccably controlled vocals which add a different sense of melody to what this kind of song would usually include.

Even the perceived filler of ‘Retro Active’ is rather good. ‘Ride Into The Sun’ has been deservedly re-recorded (complete with an unnecessary piano intro) and given the production levels it deserves some 15 years after its appearance on the band’s debut EP. ‘She’s Too Tough’ and ‘Ring Of Fire’ are sufficient enough, while the more conventionally structured ‘I Wanna Be Your Hero’ is verging on being one of the album’s highlights and was desperately unlucky not to be used as a late album ‘Hysteria’ or ‘Adrenalize’ track. Even the alternate electric versions of ‘Two Steps Behind’ and ‘Miss You In A Heartbeat’ are worthwhile to close the album out, even if a third (piano version) of the latter is taking it a little too far.

While ‘Retro Active’ cannot be rated super highly, it is extremely rare for a compilation album such as this to do so. With that in mind, this is indeed a pleasant surprise which will at least please some of Def Leppard’s longtime fans due to the relatively organic production levels used here. Importantly, a wise balance of song types is included within the 46 minute (60 if the three alternate versions are counted) duration, meaning that the accessible tracks resulted in this album still selling well and deservedly going top 10 in both the U.S & U.K.

Recommended Tracks: Two Steps Behind, Action, From The Inside & Miss You In A Heartbeat.

Desert Song
Dark 'n' dirty like you have never seen.
A mind so twisted with thoughts so unclean.
My heart is racing all tattered and torn.
I stand here naked as the day I was born.

Only the lonely will stand.
I'm holding the world in my hand.
I got to believe!

The sky is falling on this setting sun.
Echoes of silence ringing loud and long.
This isolation is the king of pain.
A lost horizon in an ocean of flames.

Only the lonely will stand.
I'm holding the world in my hand.
I got to believe!

Yeah, oh.
I've been here before, but not as I stand here today.
I wait for the dawn.
Ready to walk into the light.
Ah! (fade w/ outro)

Fractured Love

I'm caught in a dream, sometimes it ain't what it seems.
I'm all in a daze, can't fight my way out of this maze.
I'm lookin' for clues, and wanting a change in the rules.
I'm locked in a cage, acting out on the wrong stage.

(Don't want your sympathy,)
No, no, no.
(Don't need the third degree,)
No, no, no.
(Just gotta break away and scream.)
Just gotta break away and scream.
I'm caught in a dream.

I'm stood at the edge and I'm looking down.
Caught in the danger zone;
I feel like a king that has lost his crown.
And now I stand here alone.

(Don't want your sympathy,)
No.
(Don't need the third degree,)
No.
(Just gotta break away and scream.)
Just gotta break away and scream.
I'm caught in a dream!!

Fractured love, fractured love,
Iron fist in a velvet glove.
Fractured love, fractured love,
Cracks in the mirror of this fracture love.

I don't care if you pull down the sky,
angry passion is a friend of mine.
Reach out for the sky above,
it's just a fractured love.

Fractured love, fractured love,
Iron fist in a velvet glove.
Fractured love, fractured love,
Cracks in the mirror of your fractured love.

I'm caught in a dream.
Why don't you set me free?

Don't want your sympathy.
Don't want the third degree, just gotta break,
BREAK AWAY AND SCREAM!!!

Caught in a dream.
Why don't you set me free?

Fractured Love, Fractured Love
Iron fist in a velvet glove.
Fractured love, fractured love,
Cracks in the mirror of this fracture love.

Fractured love,
(Fractured love,)
Fractured love,
(Fractured love,)
Iron fist in a velvet glove.
Fractured love,
(Fractured love,)
Fractured love,
(Fractured love,)
Don't give me your fractured love!

Action

So you think you'll take another piece of me to satisfy your intellectual need.
(Do you want...)
Do you want Action?
(action, action, action)
Gonna bring you down 'cause you're pushin' me, you gotta recognize my superiority.

(Liar, liar, liar, liar.)
You know you believed it.
(Liar, liar, liar, liar.)
Cause I'm the main man.
And that's why
Ev'rybody wants a piece of the action.
Ev'rybody needs a main attraction.
I got what ev'rybody needs, satisfaction guaranteed.
Ev'rybody wants a piece of the action.

Ooh, I was suicidal 'cause she was my idol.
Baby, baby, baby bring it to your knees!
Now there was a time I would have walked the line
(Don't you bring me down.)
With your insatiable greed

(Liar, liar, liar, liar.)
You know you believed it.
(Liar, liar, liar, liar.)
Cause I'm the main man.
And that's why
Ev'rybody wants a piece of the action.
Ev'rybody needs a main attraction.
I got what ev'rybody needs, satisfaction guaranteed.
Ev'rybody wants a piece of the Action.

Do you want action, action?
Ev'rybody wants, ev'rybody needs
Ev'rybody wants, ev'rybody needs

Ev'rybody wants a piece of the action.
Ev'rybody needs a main attraction.
I got what ev'rybody needs, satisfaction guaranteed.
Ev'rybody wants a piece of the action, action ,action, action, action.

Two Steps Behind (Acoustic Version)

Walk away if you want to
it's ok, if you need to
you can run, but you can never hide
From the shadow that's creeping up beside you
There's a magic running through your soul
But you can't have it all
(Whatever you do)
I'll be two steps behind you
(Wherever you go)
and I'll be there to remind you
that it only takes a minute of your precious time
to turn around and I'll be two steps behind.
Take the time
to think about it
Walk the line, you know you just can't fight it
Take a look around and see what you can find
Like the fire that's burning up inside me,
There's a magic running through your soul
But you can't have it all
(Whatever you do)
I'll be two steps behind you
(Wherever you go)
and I'll be there to remind you
that it only takes a minute of your precious time
to turn around and I'll be two steps behind.
There's a magic running through your soul
but you, you can't have it all
(Whatever you do)
I'll be two steps behind you
(wherever you go)
and I'll be there to remind you
that it only takes a minute of your precious time
To turn around and I'll be two steps behind.
Two steps behind
yeah, baby
two steps behind
ohh, sugar
two steps behind

She's Too Tough

Black stockings and a high-heeled dress.
Good-looking but her face is a mess.
She's no angel... Oh no!
Love loaded, she's got plenty to spare.
She'll pull your trigger if only you dare.
She's no angel... Oh no!

She's too tough.
Can't help it, she just can't help it.
She's too tough.
Can't help it, she just can't help it.

Hands off, well, it's Catch 22.
You can't touch if she can't have you.
She's no angel... oh no!
Whiplash! Give you six of the best.
Lay back let her mind do the rest.
She's no angel... Oh no!
She's too tough!

Miss You In A Heartbeat

I believe, that there's something deep inside
That shouldn't be from time to time.
I sure found out, Your love was such a crime.
The more you care, the more you fall.

No need to worry, no need to turn away
'Cause it don't matter, anyway, baby

Chorus:
Oooh, I miss you in a heartbeat.
Oooh, I miss you right away.
Oooh, I miss you in a heartbeat.
'cause it ain't love, if it don't feel that way.
Oh, no.

When we touch, I just lose my self control,
A SAD sensations I can't hide.
To love is easy, it ain't easy to walk away.
I keep the faith and there's a reason why.
Yeah.
No need to worry, no need to turn away
'Cause it don't matter, anyway, baby

Oooh, I miss you in a heartbeat.
Oooh, I miss you right away.
Oooh, I miss you in a heartbeat.
'cause it ain't love, if it don't feel that way.

Now, I ain't big on promises, I'll be true to you.
I'll do 'bout anything, yeah,
for some one like, baby for you.

(Oooh)
I miss you in a heartbeat.
(Oooh)
Yeah, I'd miss you right away.
(Oooh)
Oh, miss you in a heartbeat.
(I miss you in a heartbeat.)
'Cause it ain't love if it don't feel that way.

Only After Dark

I feel my spirit fly, only after dark
I kiss the world goodbye, only after dark
Nights with the city lights, only after dark
I like to run away, only after dark

Won't you disappear into midnight again
Why don't you come, why won't you come
Why won't you fly, fly, fly with me
Sweet elusive fate will be our company

Ring out the vamp in me, only after dark
Moon sinful as can be, only after dark
It's wrong to feel so free, only after dark
Only you do it to me, only after dark

Won't you disappear into midnight again
Why don't you come, why won't you come
Why won't you fly, fly, fly with me
Sweet elusive fate will be our company

Ride Into The Sun

Revvin' up, hundred and four.
Hammer down, foot to the floor.
Such a hard ride, ridin' into the sun.
Shootin' in, gotta ticket to ride.
Movin' out, this is no place to hide
When you're ridin', ridin' into the sun.

We're gonna make it baby,
so step inside.
And if we make it baby,
(a) we're gonna ride... (into the sun.)
Just ride into the sun.

Burn it up, we're gonna cruise.
Kick down, nothin' to lose.
When you're ridin', ridin' into the sun.
A hot shot, hooked on the street.
I'm in love, got the fire in me.
When I'm ridin', ridin' into the sun.

We're gonna make it baby,
so step inside.
And if we make it baby,
you know we're gonna...
Ride, ride into the sun.
Yeah, ride into the sun.
Just ride into the sun
Yeah!

From the Inside

I am bad, I am evil,
I am winter, I am pain.
I'll mess up your life,
I'll beat up your wife,
I'll lose all your friends,
And I'll win in the end.

So you play the joker,
And I'll play the clown,
And I'll laugh while you're up there,
And I'll laugh when you're down.
Though your screams break the silence,
Oh, they won't make a sound.
Na na na na na na na na

I will rise, I will take you,
I will break you, never let you go.
I'll shoot through your veins,
I'll drive you insane,
I'll poison your breath,
And I'll love you to death.

So you be the joker,
And I'll be the clown,
And you'll laugh when you're up there,
But you'll cry when you're down.
Though your screams break the silence,
Oh, they won't make a sound.
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na

Ring of Fire

Thunder, you're tempting me
A feast of spice in the night is what I need
Ooh I'm a-ready to roar, and I'm a-ready for more
Well I'm a-ready to burn like the light into the dawn

Oh I gotta see the fire in me turning into ecstasy
So stick around and settle down, enjoy the mystery
A voice in the wilderness, there's somethin' in the air
A hidden love, forbidden pleasure, suffer secret pain

Thunder (Are you ready, ready for burnin')
Feels like fire (Are you ready, ready for burnin')
Ring of fire

Heartless, so indiscreet
You're stealing up from behind a raging heat
I'm staring into the sun, I'm staring into a gun
I'm stirring up a storm, turn it on and let it burn

Oh I gotta see the fire in me turning into ecstasy
So stick around and settle down, enjoy the mystery
A voice in the wilderness, there's somethin' in the air
A hidden love, forbidden pleasure, suffer secret pain

Thunder (Are you ready, ready for burnin')
Feels like fire (Are you ready, ready for burnin')
Ring of fire (Are you ready, ready for burnin)
Oh, feels like fire (Are you ready, ready for burnin')
Ring of fire

Thunder, you tempted me
You cut me up like a knife so tenderly

Oh I gotta see the fire in me burning up my ecstasy
A hidden love, forbidden pleasure, suffer secretly

Oh no (Are you ready, ready for burnin')
Feels like fire (Are you ready, ready for burnin')
Ring of fire (Are you ready, ready for burnin')
Feels like fire (Are you ready, ready for burnin')
Ring of fire!
yeah! yeah! yeah! yeah!

I Wanna be Your Hero

I wanna be your hero
I'll be a trick of the light
I wanna be your hero
I'll be your heat in the night

Hold tight
'Cause I like what I see
You excite
You put your finger on me
You're not too shy
You put a sting in my tail
A magic ride
And I'm a-hot on your trail
You know

You got something I want
You got something I need
Yeah!
I've got something to say
I'm on my way

Hot licks, on the tip of my tongue
Electric, you turn your headlight on
You know

You got something I want
You got something I need
Yeah!
I got something to say
I'm on my way
Ooh yeah
Get up and go

I wanna be your hero
I'll be a trick of the light
I wanna be your hero
(in) the heat of the night

Uh, hold tight
I like what I see
Oh!
Just one night
That's all I'm asking for you, you

I wanna be your hero
I'll be a trick of the light
I wanna be your hero
In the heat of the night
(I wanna be your hero)
(I wanna be your hero)

So stick around and settle down enjoy the mystery
A voice in the wilderness, there's something in the air
A hidden love, forbidden pleasure, suffer secret pain

Thunder
(Are you ready, ready for burning)
Feels like fire
(Are you ready, ready for burning)
Ring of fire

Heartless, so indiscreet, you're stealing up
From behind a raging heat

I'm staring into the sun, I'm staring into a gun
I'm stirring up a storm, turn it on and let it burn

[Repeat Bridge]

[Repeat Chorus]

Thunder, you tempted me, you cut me up
Like a knife so tenderly
Oh I gotta see the fire in me, burning up my ecstasy
A hidden love, forbidden pleasure, suffer secretly
Oh no

[Repeat Chorus]
