The second of the three great Miles Davis-Gil Evans collaborations
features the trumpeter backed by Evans's 18-piece orchestra on 13
selections from George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. This version of
"Summertime" (with Evans's countermelody) is definitive and the entire
suite should be savored in one sitting. Other highlights include "Bess,
You Is My Woman Now," "My Man's Gone Now" and "I Loves You Porgy." In
1997 this classic was reissued on CD and augmented by alternate
versions of "I Loves You, Porgy" and "Gone." A more expanded
documentation is currently available on Columbia's complete Miles
Davis/Gil Evans box.
Scott Yanow, All-Music Guide
Take George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess, add Miles Davis and arranger
Gil Evans, and what do you get? A classic jazz album that--despite the
fact that the material has been rendered almost overly familiar due to
countless interpretations--still sounds remarkably fresh four decades
after its initial release. Miles' soft yet piercing trumpet style is
perfectly suited to Gershwin's melancholy melodies, Evans' musical
direction of his 18-piece orchestra is impeccable, and their version of
"Summertime" may well be the finest ever waxed. Davis and Evans teamed
up for several recordings after this one (including the landmark
Sketches of Spain ), but Porgy & Bess still stands as one of their
most successful collaborations.

...PORGY AND BESS is possibly the best of the collaborations between
Miles and Gil Evans....Evans is justly regarded as the master of modern
orchestration and PORGY AND BESS shows him at his best. There are two
alternates to savor here, `I Loves You, Porgy,' and `More'...
Jazz Times (8/97)
Meilenstein-Album Sketches of Spain), Porgy & Bess jedoch ragt noch
immer als ihre erfolgreichste Zusammenarbeit heraus.

Ein Klassiker, der in jede Jazz-Sammlung gehört. Gil Evans
"Porgy And Bess" zu coolen Klanggemälden.
