Recorded at Ocean Way, Hollywood, California. As the title implies, this album by the veteran British R&B belter forsakes slick, electronic studio sheen in favor of a simpler acoustic approach. Basically we're talking Cocker Unplugged. Squarely aimed at the boomers that are Cocker's prime demographic, ORGANIC features stripped-down versions of some of his biggest hits, including "You Are So Beautiful," "Delta Lady," and "You Can Leave Your Hat On," and new versions of songs by boomer icons like Bob Dylan ("Dignity") and Van Morrison ("Into The Mystic"). It's a marketing man's dream. Don Was, naturally, produced it.

Organic is the fifteenth studio album by Joe Cocker, released in 1996.

Following the disastrous failure of his 550 Music debut, Have a Little Faith, Joe Cocker tried what must have seemed like a couple of surefire commercial ideas: first, hire Don Was, who has made a career out of organizing salvage operations on stars of the '60s and '70s, as producer; and second, do an "unplugged" session, albeit under another name. Thus, Organic found Cocker revisiting his interpretations of such songs as "Delta Lady" and "You Are So Beautiful" in more stripped-down arrangements. The remakes made up about half the album, with another quarter consisting of previously uncovered covers like Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic" and Randy Newman's "Sail Away," and another quarter given over to new songs. The old favorites were not given interesting enough re-imaginings to justify the effort; the new songs added nothing to Cocker's repertoire, and the new covers were problematic. You wondered why Cocker had neglected to sing Morrison's material until you heard "Into the Mystic" and realized the reason probably was that Morrison is so much better a singer with a similar style. And Cocker, who is more an emotional singer than an intellectual one, typically sang "Sail Away" without a trace of the irony that gives the song its meaning. So, while Organic was certainly a listenable Cocker album containing many songs associated with him over the years, it failed to redefine the artist in the way it seemed intended to do. And it became his second straight album to miss the charts, which boded ill for his recording career, at least on a major label.

William Ruhlmann - All Music Guide

Dazu kam exquisites Material wie Van Morrisons "Into the Mystic", Randy Newmans "Sail Away" oder Bob Dylans "Dignity".

Into The Mystic

Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when that fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don't have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
Then magnificently we will float into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when that fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I don't have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will float into the mystic
Come on girl...

Anybody Seen My Girl

Tried to put out the fire, but the flame still burns
And as she pleases she comes and goes
She's got the wind in her hair
She never ceases to hurt me so

Does she really care?
Is she ever coming home?
Is she ever gonna phone?
Another night alone

Has anybody seen my girl?
Has anybody seen my woman?
California, Tennessee
Send my baby home to me

Where am I going, oh what am I gonna do?
I know I'm not crazy, I'm just hooked on you
So go on and use me endlessly
Could you let me know
When you need me hold me close
And baby don't let go
Are you ever coming home?
Are you ever gonna phone?
Another night alone

Has anybody seen my girl?
Has anybody seen my woman?
California, Tennessee
Send my baby home to me

Has anybody seen my girl?
Has anybody seen my woman?
California, Tennessee
Send my baby home to me

Delta Lady

Woman of the country now that I found you
Longing in your soft and fertile delta
And I whisper sighs to satisfy the longin
For the warm and tender shelter of my body

Oh, you're my, yes you're my, delta lady
Yes, your my, need oh my, delta lady

Please don't ask how many times I found you
Standing wet and naked in the garden
And I think of the days
And different ways that I held you
We were closely touchin, yes our heart was beatin

Oh you're my, yes your my, delta lady
Tell you my, be oh my, delta lady

Oh, when I'm home again in England
I think of you, love
(Think about you, oh, I think about you)
Cause, I love you, love

There are concrete mountains in the city
An pretty city women live inside them
Tell you, yet it seems, the city scene is lackin you
I'm so glad you're waitin for me in the country

Oh you're mine, yes you're my, delta lady
Tell ya my, need oh my, delta lady
(Yeah, you are)
Tell ya mine, yes you're my, delta lady

Oh, you're my, need oh my, delta lady, yeah
Tell you mine, yes you're my, delta lady
FADES:
Oh, you're mine.

Heart Full Of Rain

A Heart Full Of Rain And Memories
I'm Feeling The Strain And Missing You So Desperately
I Need The Shelter Of Your Arms Tonight Oh Baby,
I Need You By My Side

I Don't Know Why Things Go The Way They Do
They Just Keep Taking Me Down
I Can't Deny I'm So Into You
And Lost When Your Not Around
If I Could Hold You
I Could Let Go Of The Pain
But Tonight I've Got A Heart Full Of Rain

Unkind Words Blindly Spoken Faith Was Broken
And You Walked Away From The World
Our Love Has Created Hope Has Faded
Return Your Flame To This Heart Full Of Rain

A Heart Full Of Rain And Memories
Love's Not In Vain Even If You Should Say
You No Longer Need Me
I'll Keep Believing Until All Thet Remains
Is Your Memories And A Heart Full Of Rain
Your Memory And A Heart Full Of Rain

Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood

Baby you understand me now
If sometimes I get a little mad
don't you know no one alive
can always be an angel
when things goes wrong
your bound to see some bad

Oh but I'm just a soul who's intentions are good
Oh lord , please don't let me be misunderstood

you know sometimes, I'm so carefree
with a joy that?s hard to hide
then sometimes again it seems
all I have is worry
then your bound to see the other side

Oh but I'm just a soul who's intentions are good
Oh lord , please don't let me be misunderstood

If I seem edgy I want you to know
I didn't mean to take it out on you
life has it's problems and i've got my share
but thats one thing I never ment to do
cause I love you

Now baby I'm just human
got my faults like anyone else
but sometimes I find myself
all alone regreting
all the foolish things that I have done

Oh but I'm just a soul who's intentions are good
Oh lord , please don't let me be misunderstood

Many Rivers To Cross

Many Rivers To Cross
But I Can't Seem To Find My Way Over
Wandering I'm Lost
As I Travel Along The White Cliffs Of Dover

Many Rivers To Cross
And It's Only My Will That Keeps Me Alive
I've Been Ripped, Washed Up For Years
And I Merely Survive Because Of My Pride

And This Loneliness Won't Leave Me Alone
It's Such A Drag To Be On Your Own
My Women Left Me But She Wouldn't Say Why
Guess I'll Just Break Right Down And Cry

Many Rivers To Cross
But Just Where To Begin
I'm Playing For Time
There've Been Times I Find Myself
Thinking Of Committing Some Terrible Crime

Still This Loneliness Won't Leave Me Alone
It's Such A Drag To Be On Your Own
My Girl Left Me But She Wouldn't Say Why
Guess I'll Just Break Right Down And Cry

Many Rivers To Cross
But I Can't Seem To Find My Way Over
Wandering I Am Lost
As I Travel Along The White Cliffs Of Dover

Many Rivers To Cross
And It's Only My Will That Keeps Me Alive
I've Been Ripped, Washed Up For Years
And I Merely Survive Because Of My Pride

High Lonesome Blue

I'm coming home, needing attention
Breaking down, I need some rest
I'm like a man from the third dimension
This way of life put me to the test

I used to be a drummer man
Kept it in the groove
Then I had a change of heart
Started singing the blues

That's what I choose
Leaving me high lonesome blue

Time moves on I'm riding with it
There's no choice, it's out of my hands
This is my way and I won't quit it
Fragile, like a rope of sand

There's a place high on a mountain
Where I go to find relief
Get my feet back on the ground
Set my spirit free

Put on my walking shoes
Got the high lonesome blue

There's nothing left to prove
High lonesome blue

Sail Away

In America you'll get food to eat
Won't have to run through the jungle
And scuff up your feet
You'll just sing about Jesus and drink wine all day
It's great to be an American

Ain't no lions or tigers-ain't no mamba snake
Just the sweet watermelon and the buckwheat cake
Ev'rybody is as happy as a man can be
Climb aboard, little wog-sail away with me

Sail away-sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay
Sail away-sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay

In America every man is free
To take care of his home and his family
You'll be as happy as a monkey in a monkey tree
You're all gonna be an American

Sail away-sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay
Sail away-sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay

You And I

Here we are on earth together,
It's you and I,
God has made us fall in love, it's true,
I've really found someone like you

Will it say the love you feel for me, will it say,
That you will be by my side
To see me through,
Until my life is through

Well, in my mind, we can conquer the world,
In love you and I, you and I, you and I

I am glad at least in my life I found someone
That may not be here forever to see me through,
But I found strength in you,
I only pray that I have shown you a brighter day,
Because that's all that I am living for, you see,
Don't worry what happens to me

Cause' in my mind, you will stay here always,
In love, you and I, you and I, you and I, you and I
In my mind we can conquer the world
In love, you and I, you and I, you and I

Darling Be Home Soon

Come
And talk of all the things we did today
Here
And laugh about our funny little ways
While we have a few minutes to breathe
Then I know that it's time you must leave

Oh but darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since you toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to

And now
A quarter of my life is almost past
I think I've come to see myself at last
And I see that the time spent confused
Was the time that I spent without you
And I feel myself in bloom

Oh my darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since you toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to

Go
And beat your crazy head against the sky
Try
And see beyond the houses and your eyes
It's okay to shoot the moon

Oh my darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since you toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to
For the great relief of having you to talk to
For the great relief of having you to talk to

Dignity

Fat man lookin' in a blade of steel
Thin man lookin' at his last meal
Hollow man lookin' in a cottonfield
For dignity

Wise man lookin' in a blade of grass
Young man lookin' in the shadows that pass
Poor man lookin' through painted glass
For dignity

Somebody got murdered on New Year's Eve
Somebody said dignity was the first to leave
I went into the city, went into the town
Went into the land of the midnight sun

Searchin' high, searchin' low
Searchin' everywhere I know
Askin' the cops wherever I go
Have you seen dignity?

Blind man breakin' out of a trance
Puts both his hands in the pockets of chance
Hopin' to find one circumstance
Of dignity

I went to the wedding of Mary-lou
She said 'I don't want nobody see me talkin' to you"
Said she could get killed if she told me what she knew
About dignity

I went down where the vultures feed
I would've got deeper, but there wasn't any need
Heard the tongues of angels and the tongues of men
Wasn't any difference to me

Chilly wind sharp as a razor blade
House on fire, debts unpaid
Gonna stand at the window, gonna ask the maid
Have you seen dignity?

Drinkin' man listens to the voice he hears
In a crowded room full of covered up mirrors
Lookin' into the lost forgotten years
For dignity

Met Prince Phillip at the home of the blues
Said he'd give me information if his name wasn't used
He wanted money up front, said he was abused
By dignity

Footprints runnin' cross the silver sand
Steps goin' down into tattoo land
I met the sons of darkness and the sons of light
In the bordertowns of despair

Got no place to fade, got no coat
I'm on the rollin' river in a jerkin' boat
Tryin' to read a note somebody wrote
About dignity

Sick man lookin' for the doctor's cure
Lookin' at his hands for the lines that were
And into every masterpiece of literature
for dignity

Englishman stranded in the blackheart wind
Combin' his hair back, his future looks thin
Bites the bullet and he looks within
For dignity

Someone showed me a picture and I just laughed
Dignity never been photographed
I went into the red, went into the black
Into the valley of dry bone dreams

So many roads, so much at stake
So many dead ends, I'm at the edge of the lake
Sometimes I wonder what it's gonna take
To find dignity

You Can Leave Your Hat On

Baby take off your coat
Real slow
Take off your shoes
I'll take off your shoes
Baby take off your dress
Yes, yes, yes

You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on

Go over there, turn on the light
Hey, all the lights
Come over here, stand on that chair
Yeah, that's right
Raise your arms up in the air
Now shake 'em
You give me reason to live
You give me reason to live
You give me reason to live
You give me reason to live

Sweet darling, (you can leave your hat on)
You can leave your hat on
Baby, (you can leave your hat on)
You can leave your hat on
(You can leave your hat on)

(You can leave your hat on)

Suspicious minds are talkin'
They're tryin' to tear us apart
They don't believe in this love of mine
They don't know what love is

They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
Yeah, I know what love is

There ain't no way
(You can leave your hat on)
You can leave your hat on
(You can leave your hat on)
Give me the reason to live
(You can leave your hat on)
You can leave your hat on

You Are So Beautiful

You Are So Beautiful To Me
You Are So Beautiful To Me
Can't You See
You're Everything I Hoped For
You're Everything I Need
You Are So Beautiful To Me

Such Joy And Happiness You Bring
Such Joy And Happiness You Bring
Like A Dream
A Guiding Light That Shines In The Night
Heavens Gift To Me
You Are So Beautiful To Me

Can't Find My Way Home

Come down off your throne and leave your body alone.
Somebody must change.
You are the reason I've been waiting so long.
Somebody holds the key.

[Chorus:]
But I'm near the end and I just ain't got the time
And I'm wasted and I can't find my way home.

Come down on your own and leave your body alone.
Somebody must change.
You are the reason I've been waiting all these years.
Somebody holds the key.

[Chorus]

But I can't find my way home.
But I can't find my way home.
But I can't find my way home.
But I can't find my way home.
Still I can't find my way home,
And I ain't done nothing wrong,
But I can't find my way home.
