One Night of Sin is the twelfth studio album by Joe Cocker, released in 1989. This followup to Cocker's comeback album (1987's UNCHAIN MY HEART) boasts the same band, the same production team, and the same esthetic approach, i.e. it's a savvy mix of slick late '80s power ballads and cannily chosen cover songs. The latter, not surprisingly, provide the meat of the album. Cocker apparently relates to the sexual paranoia in Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man," and he gives it an appropriately volcanic rendering. Even better, he seems to locate a similar feeling of dread in the old Little Willie John/Peggy Lee chestnut "Fever," and he positively out- Elvis's Elvis with his take on the similarly-themed title song. Guilt never sounded so good.



With One Night of Sin, Joe Cocker and his cohorts decided not to mess with the hit formula they had found with Unchain My Heart. Therefore, One Night of Sin suffers a bit in comparison. However, that's not to say that this isn't great '80s Joe Cocker, because everything here has something to recommend it. Includes the hit "When the Night Comes" and Cocker's updated version of Peggy Lee's "Fever."

Aaaaaarrrrrrrrggggg! Er tut es wieder. Gleich auf der ersten Nummer, "When the Night Comes", einer Bryan Adams-Komposition und dem besten Titel des Abums, stößt er seinen berühmten Schrei aus. Diesen Schrei, der seit den seligen Tagen von With a little Help from my Friends zu seinem dubiosen Markenzeichen geworden ist. Viele Freunde hatte Joe Cocker bald darauf nicht mehr. Die 70er Jahre waren ein Fiasko für ihn. Alkoholexzesse ruinierten ihn fast völlig, es folgten lieblose Platten mit müden Bluescovers, die man ihm aufs Auge drückte. Sein Problem war, da er selbst keine Songs schrieb, immer auf Fremdmaterial oder Coverversionen angewiesen zu sein. Und da war die Wahl oft mehr als unglücklich. Tina Turner, deren Karriere Cockers in gewisser Weise ähnelt, war da wesentlich besser beraten. Selbst auf dieser Platte, die langsam einen Weg aus der Misere aufzeigte, gab es noch Überflüssigkeiten wie den langweiligen 12-Bar-Blues "One Night of Sin" und ein unsägliches Cover von "Fever". Der Mann braucht einfach gute Songs vom Kaliber eines "Unforgiven" von Tim Hardin, oder dem (man staune) selbstverfaßten "Another Mind Gone", das allerdings stark an Tina erinnert. Dann wird das noch was.

Neue Freunde wird er mit dieser Scheibe kaum gewinnen, aber sicherlich alte behalten: Nach der Unchain My Heart-Devise geht's hier eher hart und mit kräftiger Orgel zur Sache, sogar Bläser sorgen für Schmackes. Joe Cocker happy, voll bluesig im Titelsong, im Evergreen Fever leicht verirrt und in Balladen wie You Know We're Gonna Hurt arg vergeigt. Der harte Cocker aber glänzt!
