An impressive and fiery Texas blues guitarist, Chris Duarte's latest album, My Soul Alone, was recorded at Prairie Sun Studios in Cotati, California with Aaron Haggerty on drums and Steve Evans on bass; Mads Tolling adds violin on one track (the final cut, "Carelessness"). Earlier in his career, Duarte was often compared to fellow Texas guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Johnny Winter's name was tossed around, as well, but Duarte has been at this professional blues thing for a couple of decades now, and while he quite likely will never escape the Vaughan/Winter cul du sac, it's obvious at this point that he has his own varied spin on the whole modern Texas blues thing, spicing it up with, at times, a jazz feel, and he even pushes into light psychedelia now and then. This newest release doesn't break much new ground on that template, but it does spotlight Duarte's songwriting (he wrote each of the dozen tracks here), and his guitar work shines like it always does. Highlights include the upbeat and almost pop "Yes, It's You," the slow blues "A Dollar Down and Feeling Low," the smooth and flowing "Blue Jean Outlaw," and the set closer, the edgy and almost eerie "Carelessness."

After over two decades of making music, the Chris Duarte Group is still releasing tight new material that is as soulfully driven as it is fun and lighthearted. Given lead singer/guitarist Chris Duarte’s history with listeners likening him to fellow Texas blues luminaries like Stevie Ray Vaughan, as well as the talent he has demonstrated in the studio and on the road since his 1994 label debut Texas Sugar/Strat Magik, it’s no surprise that Duarte has maintained a lasting presence in the genre. On this high voltage trio’s latest effort My Soul Alone, the Chris Duarte Group unleashes fresh material that stacks up well beside catalog features of past years.

Some albums are memorable for the number of hit singles they deliver, but My Soul Alone is powerful because of the alternate approach it takes. Songs like “A Dollar Down and Feeling Low” and “Blue Jean Outlaw” come in at over eight minutes long each, and they both utilize that time to let the music develop at its own pace. “Lazy Afternoon” is the album’s longest track at a length of over eleven minutes, existing as a perfect example of the jazz elements that Duarte has a habit of working into his records. Painting a picturesque day of ease and relaxation through the lyrics, Duarte allows “Lazy Afternoon” to meander along just like the carefree rainy Sunday afternoon he sings about. Instead of rushing songs along to completion, the Chris Duarte Group invests their time in experimenting with the ways in which solos can enhance the larger compositions they exist in. Other tracks contrast with this exploratory method, diving into hook-worthy melodies like those in the opening track “Show Me That You Want It” and the rollicking “Outta My Way.” Above all, the band uses this record to demonstrate their understanding of the genre itself, identifying the songs that blossom beneath perfect melodies and those that reconcile best through extended arrangements with a few jazzy solos mixed in.

Named the “Best New Talent” in a 1995 poll published by Guitar Player, Duarte is still shining the gloss on the skill that listeners first saw and heard in him years ago. My Soul Alone is an enjoyable listen from start to finish, an embodiment of the kind of soulful blues rock that sheds light on the band’s creative process through the finished recordings. After years of touring and numerous record releases, the Chris Duarte Group maintains the spark that first rocketed them through fans’ stereo systems in the 1990s.

Für welche Musik Chris Duarte steht, muss man keinem Blues Rockfan lang und breit erklären. Er weiß, wie man modernen, elektrisch verstärkten 12-Takter spielen muss, damit die Anhänger zufrieden gestellt werden. So ist es auch bei "My Soul Alone" der Fall. Chris Duarte, hier von Steve Evans (Bass) und dem Schlagzeuger Aaron Haggerty begleitet, steht für Qualität in mancherlei Hinsicht.

Zunächst wurden alle zwölf Songs von ihm geschrieben. Der Umgang mit seinem Arbeitsgerät ist ausnahmslos hervorragend und mit einer Gesamtspielzeit von etwas über vierundsiebzig Minuten veröffentlicht der Texas-Blueser auch noch eine sehr gut gefüllte Scheibe. Musikalisch ist viel los. Chris Duarte & Co. kennen sich in allen Spielarten des Genres aus und es ist nicht unbedingt erstaunlich, dass sich bei diesem Protagonisten das Baumwollfeld auch auf den Jazz und mehr erweitern lässt. Wohl gemerkt, man bleibt generell in der Blues-Schiene, aber solche luftig-jazzigen Ausflüge macht zum Beispiel ja auch ein Robben Ford. Zu dem, was in "Carelessness" abgeht, später mehr.

Neben zwei schon ziemlich langen Tracks ("A Dollar Down And Feeling Low", "Blue Jean Outlaw") gönnt sich Chris Duarte in "Lazy Afternoon" mit über elf Minuten richtig viel Zeit. Dem Namen des Titels gerecht werdend, geht es auch entsprechend relaxt zu. Mit rauer, zeitweise auch zarter Stimme singt er den Text und seine Gitarrenlicks sind nicht nur hier außerhalb jeder Kritik.

Die rhythmische Begleitung von Aaron Haggerty ist ziemlich dezent. Man könnte fast meinen, er haucht mit seinen Drumsticks über die Felle und Becken. Steve Evans zupft melodisch-tiefe Töne, die den Track so gerade am Köcheln halten. Mit einer geringfügigen, aber intensiven zu- und abnehmenden Dynamik setzt man Ausrufezeichen und Chris Duarte serviert uns über den gesamten Track hinweg eine Gitarren-Gourmetkost der Sonderklasse. Er ist halt ein richtig guter Instrumentalist. Die Spannung in der Nummer wird ständig aufrechterhalten.

Etwas überspitzt geschrieben, ist diese Nummer allerdings nur die eine Seite des in San Antonio (Texas) geborenen Musikers. Wenn es rockt, dann geht er mit einer wohltemperierten Härte vor und wirft dem Hörer nicht einen eisigen Schneeball ins Gesicht. Man wird im Laufe der zwölf Kompositionen feststellen, dass sich der Künstler einerseits auch in psychedelische Höhen schraubt und andererseits mit trocken-knackigen Riffs auf dem viel beschriebenen Highway unterwegs ist.

Von wegen Spannung ... Mads Tolling (Ann Hampton Callaway, Freddy Clarke, Stanley Clarke, The Shotgun Wedding Quintet, Turtle Island String Quartet) spielt im abschließenden "Carelessness" Violine. Wow! Hammer! Da kommt zusätzliche Freude auf, allerdings nicht nur wegen des Streichinstruments. Diese Nummer hinterlässt eine besondere Wirkung, weil man sich jetzt noch, wenn auch nur in Blitzlichtern, klassischen Elementen widmet und darüber hinaus viel längere, proggige Ausläufer eines Hochdruckgebietes einfließen lässt. Diese Richtung wird mit großem gitarristischen Engagement gemeistert. So etwas darf Chris Duarte durchaus in seinem musikalischen Auge behalten. Fast standesgemäß ist dieses ganz feine Lied ein Instrumental.

Für die entsprechend gute Klangqualität war Mike Varney (Blindside Blues Band, Craig Erickson, Eric Gales, Greg Howe, Michael Landau, Michael Schenker, Pat Travers, Leslie West) zuständig.

Die Chris Duarte Group hat auf "My Soul Alone" einige andere Varianten im Köcher. Ansonsten bietet der Texaner, wie gewohnt, Blues auf hohem Niveau, der den Hörer in allen Belangen zufrieden stellt. Was will man mehr? Natürlich einen Nachfolger und vielleicht auch noch ein oder zwei Nummern mit "Carelessness"-Stimmung.
