2010 CD Interscope BOO15039

The Beginning is the sixth studio album by American hip hop group The Black Eyed Peas. The album was released on November 26, 2010 by Universal Music. The lead single, "The Time (Dirty Bit)," was released on November 9, 2010. The second single was "Just Can't Get Enough" and it was released on February 18, 2011. The third single was "Don't Stop the Party" and was released on May 10, 2011. The album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 119,000 copies in the United States.

The Beginning received generally mixed reviews from most music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 47, based on 19 reviews, which indicates "mixed or average reviews."

Monica Herrera wrote for Billboard that "the music is expertly produced, but problems arise when Will.i.am claims the same of his wordplay. On the track "Don't Stop the Party," he chest-thumps, "Kill you with my lyricals/Call me verbal criminal." It's a silly boast for an artist who clearly focuses on beats over rhymes, and is probably better off for it." Kevin O'Donnell of Spin described the album as "one of the year's wildest sonic stews" and concluded "Pop's reigning peddlers of dumb fun are actually starting to sound stylishly avant-garde on their sixth album." The Guardian's Caroline Sullivan gave the album 3 out of 5 stars calling it "upscale hip-pop" and said that "the Black Eyed Peas have created an album similar to 2009's enormously successful The END, but with more Auto-Tune and less input from the wonderful Fergie." Rolling Stone reviewer Jon Dolan viewed that the album "largely picks up where The E.N.D. left off" and felt that "they give themselves over more fully than ever to the groove palette of club culture, stirring up electro funk, Euro-trance and classic disco." John Bush of Allmusic gave the album 2 out of 5 stars, and noted that although David Guetta only appears on one track "his production job for 2009’s “I Gotta Feeling” casts a long shadow on this record of don’t-stop-the-party jams and club-life tracks."

Entertainment Weekly writer Simon Vozick-Levinson gave the album a very positive review and stated "The Beginning wisely sticks with the heavier electronic beats they began importing from European clubs for The E.N.D. — a key ingredient that transformed the Black Eyed Peas from merely major stars to arguably the biggest chart act going [...] Every song is piled high with sticky pop melodies, slick hip-hop rhythms, bright synth parts, and vocals that have been diced and processed to high heaven, all furthering the goal of maximum catchiness." Greg Kot of Chicago Tribune gave the album 1.5 out of 4 stars and called it "the quartet’s tamest, most hook-deprived album in the Fergie era" and stated "the music’s reliance on rhythmic and lyrical repetition (as opposed to progression and surprise) becomes wearying." In his review for The Independent, Andy Gill wrote "It's a textbook blend of the over-familiar and the electronically treated, though their use of auto-tune and digital-stutter vocal effects is a touch more restrained than usual. From there on, the aspect never extends beyond the dancefloor, with martial synth-stomp riffs, spartan electro beats and loping bass grooves driving tracks." Ben Ratliff of The New York Times gave the album a negative review and noted it similarities with its predecessor, The E.N.D. with few differences, "less of Fergie’s actressy, un-Autotuned belting (too bad about that), bolder two-step techno beats, more heavily draped synthesizer tones and a fascination with late ’70s and early ’80s pop radio." and found the lyrics "soggy" and "cynical." musicOMH writer Luke Winkie stated that "will.i.am's productions sound like the bare minimum one could throw together and call a beat, usually encompassed by a simplified drum sequence and a buzzsaw synth turned up to the red and repeated long enough for DJs to make their paycheck" and wrote "the band has a knack of elongating their elementally good ideas into preposterously tiresome compositions."

The dramatic, internet-fuelled crash in record sales has done weird things to pop. In decades passed, a gigantic global hit like previous Black Eyed Peas album The E.N.D. would infuse the mastermind behind it with a megalomaniac confidence, leading him to make the next album into a self-indulgent art statement that would either be masterpiece or brazen folly. But times have changed, and the main thing that The Beginning reminds us is that William Adams, aka will.i.am, led a self-consciously right-on, Fugees-lite, version of The Black Eyed Peas for eight years before hiring a singing blonde and grabbing a hit with the bland platitudes of Where is the Love?. Therefore, and presumably with fear of past failure never far away, Will and company have followed monstrous success with an album that sounds like 2009’s Boom Boom Pow and I Gotta Feeling megahits got fed into a new software program that breaks songs into robot parts and reassembles them into infinite copies made slightly different by tiny details – a Chic sample here, a KC And The Sunshine Band melody there, a tweak of the ubiquitous auto-tuner everywhere. The Beginning is a depressing listen, not because the music’s that bad, but because it implies that even the most successful pop producer on the planet can’t afford to indulge in anything that might be construed as intelligent or interesting, lest the masses run away screaming in terror. It betrays a contempt for its audience, and disquietingly low levels of self-belief on the part of corporate American pop. You want details? Okay. Twelve songs called things like Don’t Stop the Party, Just Can’t Get Enough and… Lord help us… Love You Long Time. Beats shamelessly purloined from five-year-old electro-house tunes. An entire lyric sheet consisting of lines about being in clubs cribbed from older, cooler records. Fergie increasingly reduced to an Auto-Tuned vocal effect. The bit from Dirty Dancing in pre-ordained chart hit The Time (Dirty Bit) which sounds like cheeky pop hooliganism until you listen to the album and realise that BEP are not being ironic. Dirty Dancing fits the audience demographic, pure and simple. And one suspects that if someone at the label told them that Black Lace and The Birdie Song were the nostalgic faves of American Idol fans, Will would be hooking those babies up to something The Chemical Brothers left in a skip before you could say, "But wasn’t Boom Boom Pow actually quite brilliant?" Beware pop geniuses – hanging out with Cheryl and Simon can seriously damage your talent.

BBC Review - Garry Mulholland

The Black Eyed Peas' sixth album, The Beginning is the follow-up to the group's blockbuster album The E.N.D. Released in June 2009, The E.N.D. has sold more than 11 million copies world¬wide, while spending 52 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 chart. It is also the first album in two decades by a duo or group to yield five Top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, including the No. 1 hits "Boom Boom Pow," "I Gotta Feeling" (which is the best-selling digital song in SoundScan history), and "Imma Be," as well as the Top 10's "Meet Me Halfway" and "Rock That Body." In addition, The E.N.D. was nominated for six 2010 Grammy Awards and won for Best Pop Vocal Album, "Boom Boom Pow" won Best Short Form Music Video and "I Gotta Feeling" won for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. While the title of The E.N.D. was a play on words (standing for "The Energy Never Dies"), the new album's title, The Beginning, "refers to what is actually happening in the world right now," says will.i.am. "The Beginning is symbolic of adopting new technologies, such as augmented reality, 3D, and 360 video. It's also about being experimental and taking songs we've liked from the past and playing around with sick, crazy beats." In keeping with that manifesto, the first single from The Beginning is "The Time (Dirty Bit)," which is built around a sample from the classic 1987 theme from Dirty Dancing, ("I've Had) The Time of My Life," recorded by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. "The song is a celebration of this amazing time in our lives," says vocalist Fergie. "We've been on tour all over the world, and looking out at stadiums full of people who came out to see us -- that's as big as it gets. After the shows, we go out to the clubs and meet the fans; those are moments that we have to remember." "Plus the fact that we get to experience it with each other," adds vocalist apl.de.ap, "that's the best feeling ever." "You never know what's going to happen, so you want to make the best of every day," says will.i.am. "We wanted to capture that feeling and release a song that celebrates with the fans because it wouldn't have happened without them." This album is the beginning of a new era of Pea world domination -- fasten your seat belts pea-ple enjoy the ride, declares Taboo. The Black Eyed Peas have shot a video for "The Time (Dirty Bit)," with director Rich Lee, who also lensed the Peas' "Imma Be Rocking That Body" video, as well as clips for Eminem ("Not Afraid"), The All-American Rejects ("The Wind Blows"), Fergie ("Clumsy"), and the Pussycat Dolls ("Hush Hush"). The Beginning will be released in several physical formats - a standard CD, a deluxe CD that includes 3 bonus songs, a full album vinyl and a combo two-disc set of 20 songs that includes The Beginning & The Best of THE E.N.D... The E.N.D. was The Black Eyed Peas first original music since 2005's Monkey Business, which was certified triple platinum in the U.S., with worldwide sales of more than nine million. Monkey Business generated Grammy Awards over two consecutive years, for "Don't Phunk with My Heart" and "My Humps." The Peas' first Grammy Award came six years ago, for "Let's Get It Started," from their breakthrough 2003 album Elephunk, which introduced Fergie into the lineup, and transformed the group into interna¬tional superstars with cumulative 25x platinum sales in nearly a dozen countries around the world. In 2006, Fergie released her six-million-selling solo debut The Dutchess and 2007 Producer of the Year Grammy-nominee will.i.am released Songs About Girls. Since forming in 1995, The Black Eyed Peas have sold more than 28 million albums worldwide and more than 30.8 million digital tracks. In addition, they have logged more than 300 headline tour dates in 29 countries with more than 2.2 million tickets sold. The group has been nominated for a 2010 American Music Award in the Favorite Band, Duo or Group category.

The energy never dies!

Described by the band alternately as “a fresh new perspective” and “the beginning of a new era of Pea world domination” and “what is actually happening in the world right now,” The Beginning inevitably follows The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies), which boasted the number one single in America -- either “Boom Boom Pow” or “I Gotta Feeling” -- during fully half of 2009, including every single summer day (and then some). Although the lead single here prominently samples an ‘80s touchstone, and on the cover the Peas are displayed as pixelated preteens, Nintendo fashion, The Beginning isn’t a nostalgia trip. Barring a Slick Rick or Chic sample here and a Mr. Roboto reference there (plus buckets of hi-res synth driving the productions), nothing else directly evokes the ‘80s. As on their last two LPs, it’s heavily reliant on nightclub sloganeering and will.i.am’s purposefully (?) lame throwback rapping, alongside Auto-Tune harmonies and waves of synth. David Guetta appears on only one track, but his production job for 2009’s “I Gotta Feeling” casts a long shadow on this record of don’t-stop-the-party jams and half-baked club-life anthems. It leads off with a pumping first single, “The Time (Dirty Bit),” oddly built off “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” the inescapable, treacly duet by Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes from 1987’s Dirty Dancing. It was announced in July 2010 and released four months later, but The Beginning still sounds like it was rush-recorded and rush-released, the results of a string of late-nighters by will.i.am and co-producer DJ Ammo. (Perhaps their latest date with destiny, aka the halftime show of Super Bowl XLV, had something to do with it.) There are plentiful will.i.am vocals and comparatively few features for Fergie and the others, and the songs don’t burrow into your head, earworm-style, like “My Humps” or “Boom Boom Pow.” Still, there are scattered moments of respectability, including that lone David Guetta production, “The Best One Yet (The Boy),” and “Don’t Stop the Party.”

Someday

Someday
I'm gonna get it right, my life
Someday
I'm gonna figure it out, maybe tonight
'Cause I know Imma get it right
And I know Imma get it right
Someday, one day
Someday, one day

I'm bout to get it, bout to get, get, get it
Can't do it little cause I'm big, big Willy
I'm bout to do it just like Bill Gates did it
Cause I was born, I was born to kill it
Get in my dollars, get, get in my dollars
I need it bigger, I'm too big for smaller
I keep on working like I'm blue collar
I'm bout to get it, baby, inshallah

Someday
I'm gonna get it right, my life
Someday
I'm gonna figure it out, maybe tonight
'Cause I know Imma get it right
And I know Imma get it right
Someday, one day
Someday, one day

Breath, just breath
Now breath...
Drop it

I came here from the Philippines
In the plane with some big, big dreams
I left everything I knew behind me
Like my mom and my family
People tell me that I ain't gonna make it
I gotta finger aimed at all of them haters
In the minute ya'll go castivate cause
Cause in the minute Imma get my paper

Someday
I'm gonna get it right, my life
Someday
I'm gonna figure it out, maybe tonight
'Cause I know Imma get it right
And I know Imma get it right
Someday, one day
Someday, one day

Someday you're wondering if you're really gonna make it
Sometimes you wanna know is there anyone to save ya
I know you've been down before, like underneath the ground
Still got another chance to turn it all around
Just know your time will come, so give it all you got
Don't stop believin, so give it all you got
Got, got, got, got...

Whenever

Love, through the trees, past the sky
Beyond the northern lights.
You will see, my delight
Reflecting in your eyes
And I wanna go, if you wait for me
Whenever, wherever
And then you, select the destination
Wherever, whenever

We'll go-ooo-oooo-ooo
Wherever, whenever
We'll go-ooo-oooo-ooo-ooo.
I wa- I-wa I wanna love forever, love forever, baby.
Wherever, wherever you wanna go (One day)
Do-do whatever, do whatever baby
Wherever, wherever, forever together

I fell asleep, don't know why
You let me come alive
You and me, we collide
Ignite the starry fire
And you warm me up, and you wait for it
Whenever, whenever
And then you wake me up, and you wait for it
Whenever, whenever

I wanna go-oooo-ooo-oooo
Wherever, whenever
I wanna go-oooo-ooo-oooooo
I wa- I-wa I wanna love forever, love forever, baby.
Wherever, wherever you wanna go (One day)
Do-do whatever, do whatever baby
Wherever, wherever, forever together
Whenever, whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever

I love you forever and ever and always I love you
Whenever you need me
I'll be there right by you
Whenever you call me
I'm there when you call
Whenever you're falling
I'm there when you fall
Wherever your going
I'll be right there showing
Our love's always growing and growing and growing
I know that you know it, there's no need for guessing
When I am requesting, I'm there with no questions
As... I'll go, wherever, whenever
If ever, you need me, I'll be here
Forever

You can't have my digital,
Future Aboriginal,
Get up off my genitals,
I stay on that pinnacle,
Chewin up my lyricals,
Call me verbal criminal,
Send you to that clinical,
Subscribe use of Chemicals,
I.D.O. and visual, can't see me, invisible.
I old school like Biblical,
Futuristic next level,
Never on that typical
Will I stop I never know...

I ain't gonna quit should I show
Now baby don't you stop it, stop it
Now baby don't you stop it, stop it

Play It Loud

I pledge my alligance,
To rhythm and sound.
Music is my medicine,
Let the rhythm Pound

[CHORUS]
And play it loud, baby play it loud
Play it loud, Baby play it loud
Rock the crowd, Baby rock the crowd
And play it loud, baby play it loud

I found a love,
Its in the music
Drop all your guns,
Drop all that bullshit.
We come to learn
Inside the instruments.

John Lennon, Bob Marley are my presidents.
The sound of trumpets wake up people laying down,
The drum and volume playin gonna shake the ground
The violins will pick you up when you are down
The melody will spin around and around.

[CHORUS]
And whos going to stop us?
Whos going to stop us from rocking with a sound?
Whos going to stop us, whos going to stop us
From b-b-breaking it down?
Play it loud, baby play it loud.
Play it loud, Baby play it loud
Rock the crowd, Baby rock the crowd
And rock the crowd, Baby play it loud.

Hot beats coming from the city streets,
MP3s via internet from overseas
DJ's playing, you dance to 'em
Swaying, staying up
All night, zombie life
I'll be your delight, Oh.
The sound of trumpets wake up people laying down, Oh
The drum and volume playin gonna shake the ground
The violins will pick you up when you are down
The melody will spin around and around.

[CHORUS]
And whos going to stop us?
Whos going to stop us from rocking with a sound?
Whos going to stop us, whos going to stop us
From b-b-breaking it down?
Play it loud, baby play it loud.
Play it loud, Baby play it loud
Rock the crowd, Baby rock the crowd
And play it loud, Baby play it loud.

I pledge my alligance.
To rhythm and sound
