This is B.B.'s celebrity duet album, and a straightahead blues album
this is not. But longtime fans who are aware of King's genre-stretching
capabilities will find much to savor here. Kicking off with B.B.
playing some beautiful fills and solo work behind Van Morrison on "If
You Love Me," the superstars start lining up to jam with the King, with
Tracy Chapman ("The Thrill Is Gone"), Eric Clapton (a funkified "Rock
Me Baby"), the Rolling Stones ("Paying the Cost to Be the Boss," twith
a fine harp solo from Mick Jagger), Willie Nelson (his "Nightlife,"
tlong a standard in B.B.'s set list), Bonnie Raitt ("Baby I Love You")
and Marty Stuart ("Confessin' the Blues") all turning in fine efforts.
The only clinker aboard here is an ill-advised attempt to make a rap
record with Heavy D, the execrable "Keep It Coming."
Cub Koda, All-Music Guide
This is B.B. King's "Duets" album. And like Frank Sinatra, when B.B.
King calls, the biggest names in pop and rock are quick to sign up for
the opportunity to record with one of this century's musical icons.
Unlike Sinatra, though, King is still at the top of his game. At 73, he
is on the road constantly, and his voice and guitar remain among the
most distinctive in blues music. Like all albums of this sort, the
contributions from the various guest artists are uneven. King has gone
with a somewhat predictable lineup of established, veteran rock stars
who are firmly grounded in the blues - Van Morrison, Eric Clapton,
Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker, Dr. John and The Rolling Stones. Most of them
turn in solid, if less than inspired performances. It's fun, though, to
hear Mick, Keith and the boys trying to keep up with the old master,
and they generally succeed. Some of the more surprising successes are
country star Marty Stuart's upbeat jam with King on "Confessin' the
Blues," and Tracy Chapman's tough, moody reading of "The Thrill is
Gone." The lone dud is a poorly thought out rap duet with Heavy D. The
album closes with its best match: B.B. and Willie Nelson, two of the
ultimate road warriors, ripping through Nelson's "Night Life," one of
the great anthems of life on the road. Perfect.
"Jeder der Studiogäste steigerte sich in seiner Begegnung mit dem
Großmeister des Genres. Tracy Chapman gurrt wie eine
Friedenstaube, Mick Hucknall schluchzt mitfühlend wie zu besten
Simply-Red-Zeiten, Eric Clapton zupft meisterliche Chicago-Rhythmen,
und die Rolling Stones geben in "Paying The Cost To Be The Boss" eines
London, New York und L.A. Genauso klingt dieses Blues-Meisterwerk denn
auch."
W. Andresen in stereoplay 1/98
grandios Zucchero, schillernd Tracy Chapman, dazu David Gilmour, Dr.
John und Van Morrison in Top-Form; überfordert dagegen Mick
Hucknall. Glänzende Arrangements, perfekte Tontechnik und ein
verblüffendes Finale mit Willie Nelson: Mehr Seele kann der Blues
nicht haben!
Der Meister rief, und alle kamen. 17 hochkarätige Stars aus
verschiedenen musikalischen Gefilden folgten der Einladung des
72jährigen Blues-Giganten, um an einem Album der Extraklasse
mitzuwirken. In 17 Songs skizziert B.B.
"Van The Man" seiner heimlichen Liebe hin. Was er unlängst mit
John Lee Hooker unternahm, findet in der exquisiten Interpretation
seiner Komposition "If You Love Me" seine Fortsetzung: Einmal mehr
The Cost To Be The Boss" eines ihrer besten Gastspiele in der Welt der
Zwölftakter. "Alle waren mit ganzem Herzen dabei", schwärtmte
B.B. nach den Sessions in London, New York und L.A. Genau so klingt
Besonders empfehlenswert
sind die Tracks: "If you Love me", mit Van Morrison; "The Thrill is
gone" mit Tracy Chapman; "please send me someone to Love" mit Mick
Hucknall; "Paying the Cost to the Boss" mit den Stones; "Dangerous

If you love me
You will give your heart
Why should we be apart
If you love me
If you love me
Baby you will know the truth
I wasn't born to lose
And I love you
Affinity and communication
That makes reality
Understandering is the first thing
It means so much to me
If I love you
I will find the key
If it's meant to be
Because, 'cause I love you [ alright ]
[ B.B. solo ]
Affinity and communication
That makes, that makes, that makes reality
Understanding is the first thing
That means so very much to me
If I love you, baby
I will find the key
And, if it's meant to be - yes it is
And I love you - yes I do
[ Van harp ]
And I love you baby
And I promise I do
THE THRILL IS GONE
The thrill is gone
The thrill is gone away
The thrill is gone baby
The thrill is gone away
You know you done me wrong baby
And you'll be sorry someday
The thrill is gone
It's gone away from me
The thrill is gone baby
The thrill is gone away from me
Although, I'll still live on
But so lonely I'll be
The thrill is gone
It's gone away for good
The thrill is gone baby
It's gone away for good
Someday I know I'll be open armed baby
Just like I know a good man should
You know I'm free, free now baby
I'm free from your spell
Oh I'm free, free, free now
I'm free from your spell
And now that it's all over
All I can do is wish you well
ROCK ME BABY
Rock me baby, rock me all night long
Rock me baby, honey, rock me all night long
I want you to rock me baby,
like my back ain't got no bones
Roll me baby, like you roll a wagon wheel
I want you to roll me baby, like you roll a wagon wheel
Want you to roll me baby,
you don't know how it makes me feel
Rock me baby, honey, rock me slow
Yeah, rock me pretty baby, baby rock me slow
Want you to rock me baby,
till I want no more
PLEASE SEND ME SOMEONE TO LOVE
Heaven please send to all mankind
Understanding and peace of mind
But if it's not asking too much
Please send me someone to love
Show the world how to get along
He's willing to when hate is gone
But if it is not asking too much
Please send me someone to love
I wake up and ponder the world's trouble
My answer is always the same
Now let's put an end to all of this
Hate will put the world in a flame- what a shame
As we cause... In misery
How 'bout them boy, no sympathy
But if it is not asking too much
Please send me someone to love
Heaven please send to all mankind
Understanding and peace of mind
But if it is not asking too much
Please send me someone to love
BABY I LOVE YOU
If you want my loving
If you really do
Don't be afraid, baby
Just ask me
You know I'm gonna give it to you
Ah, and I do declare (I do!)
I wanna see you with it
Stretch out your arms, little boy
You're gonna get it
Cause I love you
(Baby baby baby I love you)
There ain't no doubt about it
Baby I love you
(Baby baby baby I love you)
I love you, I love you,
I love you, I love you,
Baby I love you
If you feel you wanna kiss me
Go right ahead, I don't mind
All you got to do is, snap your fingers
And I'll come a running, I ain't lying
(I ain't lying!)
And oh! what you want
Little boy, you know you got it
I'll deny my own self before I'll see you without it
Cause I love you
(Baby baby baby I love you)
There ain't no doubt about it
Baby I love you
(Baby baby baby I love you)
I love you, I love you,
I love you, I love you,
Baby I love you
Some day, you might wanna run away
And leave me sitting here, cryin'
But if it's all the same to ya baby
I'll go to stop you from saying good-bye (good-bye)
Baby I love you
(Baby baby I love you)
Baby I need you
(Baby baby I love you)
I said I want ya
(Baby baby I love you)
Got to have ya baby
(Baby baby I love you)
Don't let your neigh-
(Baby baby I love you)
bors tell you I don't want ya
(Baby baby I love you)
Don't let your low-down
(Baby baby I love you)
AIN'T NOBODY HOME
Once upon a time, a long long time ago, wherever you'd lead me, I would surely follow
Girl, you put me through some pain and misery
And now you are standing on my doorstep, telling me how much you need me
Baby, ain't nobody home (Chorus: nobody's home)
Ain't nobody home (Chorus: nobody's home)
How many times I begged for you to come home, but you laughed at me and said let me
alone
Through my falling tears I saw you walk away
And now you're beggin' me to forgive you, but this time, baby, it's your turn to beg
Baby, ain't nobody home (Chorus: nobody's home)
Ain't nobody home (Chorus: nobody's home)
Girl, I used to love you, in ways no one else would love you
Gave you everything that I own
Girl, you can't come back here
Ain't nobody home (Chorus: nobody's home)
Once upon a time, when you went on your way
But, girl, I hoped and prayed, that you'd come back some day
But time has made some changes, turned me upside down
So, you can beg me to forgive you, but this time, baby, you can turn right around
Ain't nobody home
Ain't nobody home
Girl, you hurt me once (Chorus: ain't nobody home)
I hear you knockin' (Chorus: ain't nobody home)
THERE MUST BE A BETTER WORLD SOMEWHERE

CONFESSIN' THE BLUES
Baby, here I stand before you with my heart in my hand
I want you greet it mama hopin' that you'll understand
Oh baby, mama please don't dog me around
Well, I'd rather love you baby, than anyone else I know in town
Well, because you're so nice and lovely
And you have such pleasant ways
If you take to your home I'll be there the rest of my days
That's the truth mama
Yes, you know I wouldn't lie
Well, if I don't love you baby
I swear I hope I die
Oh baby, don't you want a man like me?
Yeah baby, don't you want a man like me?
Well, you think only about our future
And forget about your used to be
Well now, this is my confession mama
And I'm thrilled by all your charms
It seems that I'm in heaven when you hold me in your arms
Now baby, you can have me for yourself
Well now, you was meant for me baby
And I don't want nobody else
Oh baby, don't you want a man like me?
Yeah baby, don't you want a man like me?
Well, you think only about our future
And forget about your used to be
PAYING THE COST TO BE THE BOSS
You act like you don't want to listen
When I'm talking to you
You think you outta do baby
Anything you wanna do
You must be crazy baby
You just gotta be outta your mind
As long as I'm payin' the bills woman
I'm payin' the cost to be the boss
I'll drink if I want to
And play a little poker too
Don't you say nothing to me
As long as I'm taking care of you
As long as I'm workin baby
And payin' all the bills
I don't want no mouth from you
About the way I'm supposed to live
You must be crazy woman
Just gotta be outta your mind
As long as I foot the bills
I'm payin' the cost to be the boss
Now that you got me
You act like you ashamed
You don't act like my woman
You just usin' my name
I tell you I'm gonna have all the money
And I don't want no back-talk
Cause if you don't like the way I'm doin'
Just pick up your things and walk
You gotta be crazy baby
You must be outta your mind
As long as I'm payin' the bills woman
I'm payin' the cost to be the boss

CRYING WON'T HELP YOU
Oh no matter what you say baby
No matter what you do
The way you've been treating me woman
Is coming back home to you
And your crying won't help you woman
Oh, crying won't help you baby
Oh, crying won't help you woman
'Cause you've been so mean to me
Oh, you must remember baby
No matter where you go
Watch those seeds just scatter woman
Because you're gonna reap just what you sow
And your crying won't help you woman
Oh, crying won't help you now
Oh, crying won't help you baby
'Cause you been so mean to me
Oh, the way you've been treating me woman
Just can't understand
Oh, I'm gonna leave you woman
Let you do the best you can
And your crying won't help you woman
Oh, crying won't help you now
Oh, crying won't help you woman
'Cause you been so mean to me
Look out!
Oh, just before I leave you woman
Just before I shake your hand
I'm gonna get me a woman baby
Not to get your mad
And your crying won't help you woman
Oh, crying won't help you now
Oh, crying won't help you baby
'Cause you been so mean to me
NIGHT LIFE
When the evening, the evening sun goes down
You gonna find me somewhere hanging around
The night life, people, it ain't no good life
But it's my life, yeah
All the people just like you and me
Everybody's dreaming
Dreaming about their old used to be
The night life, hey, it ain't no good life, people
Oh but it's my life
Yes listen to the blues, people
Listen to what they're saying
Yes listen to the blues, people
Listen to the way they're playing
Heaven please send to all mankind
Understanding and peace of mind
If it's not asking too much
Please send me someone to love, someone to love
Show the world, show them how to get along
Peace will enter when hate is gone
If it's not asking too much
Please send me someone to love
Please send me someone to love
Nights I lay awake and ponder world's troubles
And my answer is always the same
Unless man put an end to this damnable sin
Hate will put the world in a flame, what a shame
Just because I'm, because I'm in misery
Oh I don't beg, I don't beg for no sympathy
But if it's not asking too much
Please send me someone to love, yeah
Oh the night life, people it ain't no good life
But it's my life, yeah
So please, please, please, please, please, please
Please send me someone to love
Someone to love
