Human Conditions demonstrates that Richard Ashcroft hasn't lost his
drive to tackle big topics. The titles tell their own story: "Check the
Meaning," "Paradise," "God in the Numbers," "Man on a Mission"--more
songs about God, life, and passion. For better or worse, few rock stars
have engaged in such an intense, irony-free existential quest. Human
Conditions continues the wide-eyed spiritual odyssey instigated by
2000's Alone with Everybody. Ashcroft's persuasive, expressive voice
carries the fluent opener "Check the Meaning," while the
Spiritualized-like "Buy It in Bottles" will likely prove to be a
concert favorite. "Science of Silence and Man on a Mission" find the
ex-Verve frontman seeking truth in an insecure world, and the wracked,
confessional "Lord I've Been Trying" scales new heights of grandeur.
There are weighty splendors aplenty here. For Richard Ashcroft, the
quest continues.

Das zweite Soloalbum von Ex-Verve-Chef Richard Ashcroft Human
Conditions lässt nichts zu wünschen übrig. Der englische
Sänger und Komponist umgeht geschickt alle modischen Fallen und
schafft eine weitläufige Klanglandschaft von durchgehend hohem
Niveau.
Ballade "Buy It In Bottles" oder "Paradise". Bis auf den wilden
Punk-Ausreißer "Bright Lights" ist die Stimmung verhangen
melancholisch und von amerikanischen Folk-Größen wie James
Taylor geprägt ("Lord I've Been Trying"). Höhepunkt ist
unbestritten das melodramatische "Nature Is The Law", eine kongeniale
Zusammenarbeit mit Brian Wilson von den Beach Boys. Zum
cinemascope-breiten Gospelchor pendelt sich der Gesang zwischen
gereiftem Elvis Presley und Brad Roberts von den Crash Test Dummies
ein. Zeitlos schön und für Novembernebeltage der ideale
Hintergrund.

Richard Ashcroft has always been driven to tackle big topics in music,
and Human Conditions finds him earnestly rolling the world into a
question one more time. Even the titles tell their own story: "Check
the Meaning", "Paradise", "God in the Numbers", "Man on a
Mission"--more songs about God, life and passion, then. For better or
worse, no contemporary rock star has engaged in such an intense,
irony-free existential quest since Jim Morrison.
Human Conditions continues the wide-eyed spiritual odyssey instigated
by 2000's Alone With Everybody which is very good. Ashcroft is in
persuasive, expressive voice on the fluent opener "Check the Meaning",
while the spiritualised "Buy It in Bottles" will increase sales of
disposable cigarette lighters in arenas around the globe. "Science of
Silence and Man on a Mission" find the ex-Verve vocalist seeking, as
ever, truth in an insecure world and the wracked, shoulder-heaving
"Lord I've Been Trying" scales new heights of confessional grandeur.
There are weighty splendours aplenty here: for Richard Ashcroft, it's
clear the quest for catharsis through rock continues.

Two years after his solo debut, ex-Verve lynchpin Richard Ashcroft
returns with Human Conditions, a ten-track album of serious intent that
is, first and foremost, an ode to the power of song. And while several
tracks here check in around the six-minute mark, this man’s
uncompromising style can be forgiven, for his substance is palpable.
Opener 'Check The Meaning' mixes twinned baritone and tenor vocal lines
with a sparkling guitar riff and brass parping. Lush orchestration, a
Verve trademark, completes an understated anthem. But unchecked lyrical
pomposity sometimes threatens to mar his instrumentation. “Can
you hear what I’m sayin’ / Got my mind meditatin’ on
love,” he drawls, telling us to “check the meaning”
repeatedly as if he’s saying something that’s never been
said. Eight minutes of this is nothing if not self-indulgent.
Yet he can hardly be criticised for trying to get to grips with
Important Things – God, love, the meaning of life, where
we’re from and where we’re going to all figure at some
point as 'Human Conditions' shambles on in a wash of strings and
laid-back beats. 'Lord I’ve Been Trying' – big themes
obviously don’t scare him at all – shows that when it comes
to melancholia, few do it better. Some lovely lyrics top off a
single-worthy melody: “Lord I’ve been trying / Trying to
keep myself from crying.” When he was recording this song, he
knew he was on to a winner, and it shows.
Elsewhere, 'Paradise' features the ubiquitous strings, layered vocals,
brass and bells, and an overwhelming lyrical melancholy remind most of
'Lucky Man' from 'Urban Hymns'. But tracks such as these are somewhat
interchangeable and don’t really indicate any progression in
Ashcroft’s musical élan, but are nonetheless easy on the
ear.
It’s 'Man On A Mission' that might well be the song title that
sums up Ashcroft best, and it’s a memorable slice of melodious
music with lyrical intent. On this song Ashcroft’s vocals hit
perfection. Musically it’s not a million miles away from The
Eagles, with a laid-back charm belying its meaty subject matter. It has
obvious single potential. “I heard you caught the blues,”
he muses - not a surprising outcome for anyone listening to this album.
The most incongruous moment comes with 'Bright Lights' and the
appearance of Mercury-winning tabla master Talvin Singh. The tempo is
raised, and that comes as a welcome relief, but this song seems
distinctly out on a limb within this album.
Its antithesis is the startling effort that is 'Running Away', a song
that recalls Spiritualized’s finer, chilled moments. Guitars and
bass – both played by Ashcroft – underpin eerie tambourine
and drum beats which combine to woozy and repetitive effect.
And with 'Nature Is The Law', a big musical theme tops a record of big
lyrical themes. It’s a song which closes the album in a similar
style to its opening – namely overblown and self-indulgent, yet
easy to listen to for all that.
And when an artist tackles big themes with melodies as sweet as
anything you’ll hear all year, it’s possible to forgive a
very human condition.
Richard Ashcroft To Reveal 'Human Conditions' in October
Richard Ashcroft has revealed the title of his upcoming second solo
album: Human Conditions, tentatively set for release in October.
The former singer of the Verve follows up his 2000 solo bow, Alone With
Everybody, once again working with producer Chris Potter, who co-helmed
the first solo album and the Verve's Urban Hymns. The sessions took
place at Barge Studios on the River Thames in London.
The forthcoming album includes guests spots from Brian Wilson, Talvin
Singh, and DJ Shadow. Ashcroft premiered one of the album's new songs,
"Buy It In Bottles" back in February, during a Teenage Cancer Benefit
concert at London's Royal Albert Hall. He's so pleased with the new
work that he's already thinking about his third solo album, with a
release date of late next year in mind.
Ashcroft most recently made a guest appearance on "The Test," a track
on the Chemical Brothers' album, Come With Us. He'll perform September
14-15 as a special guest of Oasis, when the band plays its hometown of
Manchester, England, at the Lancashire County Cricket Club.
LONDON, UK - 2002-07-10 Daily Telegraph
The Verve.
Heraus
kam ein wirklich "großes" Stück Musik. Perfekter, fast schon
komponierter Rock - kein drei Minuten Fast-Food.
- die Überplatte seiner einstigen Band The Verve. Die Zeit
verregneter Abende kann man gebrauchen. Wer Ashcrofts Arbeit schon
RICHARD ASHCROFT has named his new album 'HUMAN CONDITIONS' and it will be one of TWO new albums, NME.COM can reveal.
Speaking exclusively to this website the day before he put the
finishing touches to the first one, he declared: "The creative process
ain’t going to stop now, so I’m aiming to release this
album in early October and then, in 11 or 12 months time, the next one
will come out.
"I think there’s been quite a few times in the past where
I‘ve felt like a star player dogged by injury. I’d love it
if there was a more realistic creative approach to making music rather
than feeling that every record is some kind of comeback, or another
chance. Another chance at what? I’ve already succeeded!
I’ve got nothing to lose."
NME.COM heard three tracks off the first as-yet-untitled album,
recorded at London’s Metropolis studios with producer Chris
Potter. ‘Buy It In Bottles’, premiered at February’s
Teenage Cancer Benefit at The Royal Albert Hall, is steeped in country
melancholy, while the stringed ballad ‘Lord I’ve Been
Trying’ builds on the orchestral blueprint of ‘Alone With
Everybody’, a classic Ashcroft vocal that sees him singing "gotta
get rid of these blues".
More unusual is the powerful soul-tinged orchestral blast of
‘Check The Meaning’‘. "It’s like a prayer from
an agnostic who’s caught in the crossfire," is how Ashcroft
explains it. "Until the fantasy of the World Cup started, I thought we
were staring down the barrel of World War Three. People may want to
call me crass for saying ‘my mind’s meditating on
love’ but I don’t give a fuck".

den Songs „Paradise", „Lord I've been trying",
„Nature is the Law" wird einem ganz warm ums Herz. Wer allerdings
Denn die erste Single „Check the Meaning"

benötige, dazu gehörten allerdings The Verves "Urban Hymns",

offiziellen Fortsetzung zu Alone with everybody.
Menschen durch seine Musik helfen will!?!) buy it in bottles und man on

Songs wie "God Is In The Numbers", "Paradise" oder - oh Schreck! - "Man
On A Mission". Für Ashcrofts Texte braucht man also starke Nerven,
Was
fehlt, sind glasklare Hits wie "Crazy World" oder "A Song For The
So besteht Ashcrofts größte
Leistung diesmal im Kleinen: Brian Wilson darf im hübschen
Schlussstück den Chor übernehmen. Titel ? "Nature Is The
Law". Dann ist ja alles klar.
When I'm low, and I'm weak, and I'm lost
I don't know who I can trust
Paranoia, the destroyer, comes knocking on my door
You know the pain drifts to days, turns to nights
But it slowly will subside
And when it does, I take a step, I take a breath
And wonder what I'll find
Can you hear what I'm saying?
Got my mind meditating on love, love
Feel what I'm saying
Got my mind meditating on love, love
The human condition, the human condition
Too much blood, too much hate, turn off the set
There's got to be something more
When Mohammed, Allah, Buddah, Jesus Christ
Are knocking down my door
I'm agnostic getting God, but man
She takes a female form
There's no time, no space, no law
We're out here on our own
Can you hear what I'm saying?
Got my mind meditating on love, love
Feel what I'm saying
Got my mind meditating on love, love
Check the meaning
(The human condition)
Check the feeling
(The human condition)
Guess it's life, doing it's thing
Making you cry, making you think
Yeah life, dealing it's hand
Making you cry and you don't understand
Life, doing it's thing
Making you cry now, making you think of
Pain, doing it's thing
Making you cry yeah, making you sing
Don't say it, don't say it's too late
Don't, don't say it's too late (It's never too late, it's never too late)
Don't, don't say it's too late (It's never too late)
Don't, don't say it's too late
The human condition, the big decisions
The human condition, the big decisions
I'm like a fish with legs, I fell from the tree
I made a rocket (check the meaning), I made a wheel
I made a rocket (check the feeling), I swam the ocean (check the meaning)
I saw the moon (say a prayer), I seen the universe (and beyond)
I see you (check the feeling), I see me (check the meaning)
That's my reality
And while the city sleeps we go walking
It's a beautiful world
And when the city sleeps we go walking
We find a hole in the sky and then we start talking
And then we say "Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ
Buy us some time, buy us some time"
Hear what I'm saying
Can you hear what I'm saying?
Can you hear what I'm saying?
Can you hear what I'm saying?
It's gonna be alright
BUY IT IN BOTTLES
Baby come on, come on down
And love please don't make a sound
Let nature strike a chord
'Cos nature is the Lord that I depend
When you learn to cut it loose
All the things that've been drowning you
Let 'em slide from your hands
The foolish demands from the people round you
I know you can buy it in bottles and
I know you may find it with prayer
I know it all so very well
Until I get there then
I'll be looking for the sense
You can meet me where I am
And here I stand, and here I stay
I know you can buy it in bottles and
I know you may find it with pills
I know it all so very well
Stuck in this life where nothing changes
I'm born of man, I'm born of ages
I know you can buy it in bottles and
I know you may find it with prayer
I know it all so very well
I know you can buy it in bottles and
I know you may find it with pills I know it all so very well
Until I get there then
Until I get there then
Until I get there then
Until I get there then
BRIGHT LIGHTS
The bright lights of the big city
They taught us how to think, they taught us how to steal
Come on and steal me, steal me
You took your razor tongue to my lovin' eyes
You said "A time to live, now's the time to die"
Come on now die with me, die with me
Can't you see there must be more for me
You know you're livin' a lie
And so am I
You know I'd have a breakdown
But I don't have the time
I get up straight, I take my pill
I swallow it whole, I don't feel ill
It ain't a crime to live, it ain't a crime to die
It ain't a crime to walk in this big, big sky
Come on now walk with me, walk with me
Can't you see there must be more for me
You know you're livin' a lie
And so am I
I know you'd have a breakdown
But you don't have the time
And you're all messed up
Waiting for a sign
You want me to paint it
I haven't got the time
Take a ride with me
It ain't no crime to walk, it ain't no crime to fly
It ain't no crime to die, it ain't no crime to take a walk in
the big sky
The bright lights of the big city
They taught us how to think, they taught us how to see can you
(Twenty, twenty-first century breakdown)
Can't you see there must be more for me
You know you're livin' a lie
And so am I
I know you'd have a breakdown
But you don't have the time
And you're all messed up
Waiting for a sign
You want me to paint it
I haven't got the time
And it's making me crazy
I don't know where I fit
I guess in the end
We're all sick
Come on now ride with me, come on now ride with me
Come on now ride with me, come on now ride with me
Come on now ride with me, just take a ride with me
Twenty twenty twenty twenty twenty twenty-first
Twenty twenty twenty twenty-first
Twenty twenty twenty twenty twenty
(The bright lights of the big city)
Twenty twenty twenty twenty twenty sound
(The bright lights of the big city)
Twenty twenty twenty twenty twenty vision
(The bright lights of the big city)
Come on now ride with me
Come on now ride with me
PARADISE
You're just like I was
So full of love, so full of love
I feel you're taking me back
To all those feelings of yesterday
Dark and dusty tracks
How long can I stay here?
How long can I pray here?
You know we meet in another space
You turn around and I see your face
Oh what a fruit, what a tree you shall be
You'll be fed by the mountains, fed by the streams
(Set a sail) Set a sail for paradise (We'll leave in the morning)
(Set a sail) Set a sail to paradise (We'll leave in the morning)
I know when I'm losing control
I play I am the cosmos
And let the feelings roll
How long can I stay here?
How long can I pray here?
You know we meet in another place
You turn around and I see your face
Oh and what a fruit, what a tree you shall be
You'll be fed by the mountains, the crystal streams
Then we go for a walk
We hold hands and start to talk
Oh what a fruit, what a tree this love will be
You'll be fed by the mountains, fed by me
Set a sail for paradise (Leave in the morning)
Set a sail for paradise (Leave in the morning)
Set a sail for paradise
Leave in the morning
We can leave in the morning
Leave in the morning (Set a sail)
Leave in the morning
Leave in the morning (Set a sail)
GOD IN THE NUMBERS
Sometimes you hold the world in your hands
Sometimes the world it baffles you with plans
Some days you drift oh so easy and free
Some nights you sleep in blissful harmony
How do we leave the wreakage of our lives?
How do you leave the past out in the night?
Don't throw away the pictures that give you a smile
Don't throw away the memories that make you cry
I saw God in the numbers
I saw God in the numbers
I saw God in the numbers
I saw God in the numbers
I know that I could learn a little harder
There's so much that I want to read and know
But maybe I'm a little lazy
Maybe I don't really want to know
I saw God in the numbers
I saw God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
I saw God in the numbers
I saw God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
I saw God in the numbers
I saw God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
I saw God in the numbers
I saw God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
The more I learn of history the more I hate it
'Cos we're repeating things we did a thousand years ago
We're building palaces of fortune in the sky
There's an underclass dying whilst we smile
I saw God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
I saw God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
I saw God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
I saw God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
I saw God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
I saw God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
I saw God in the numbers (I saw God in the numbers)
(I don't wanna
I don't wanna
I don't wanna)
SCIENCE OF SILENCE
We are on a rock, spinning silently
But I'm safe when you're here with me
These questions I'm asking, they've been haunting me
I need some security, can't you see?
Her love was like a fountain rushing and pouring down
The darkness is putting out the light in me
She's a well to be dug, she's a university
A cosmic library - wait and see
We are on a rock, spinning silently
Won't you get close to me
We are on a rock, spinning in infinity
Won't you get close to me
Is it my genes that have made me?
Is it the things I took, is it the things I said
Does karma rule?
Well if there's a God well can you hear me now?
I am crying out, hoping you know
And in my baby's arms I need no faith
I need no words to define myself
And when I'm holding you, light rushing through
I wanna make it now, safe and straight
We are on a rock, spinning silently
Baby get a hold of me
We are on a rock, spinning in infinity
Baby consoling me
Oh I don't know when the fear's going to end
I don't know if my prayers are received - the ones I send
(We are on a rock, spinning silently)
I can't live in pain and fear
(We are on a rock, spinning in infinity)
Oh I see so much joy and it makes me scared
(We are on a rock, spinning silently)
Oh I don't know if my prayers are received, until the end
(We are on a rock, spinning in infinity)
Oh I guess it ain't offet for you to pray for peace
Oh baby I don't know where I'm going
All I know is that I need you as a friend
MAN ON A MISSION
Hey, I heard you'd run away
But where you gonna run?
You got such a pretty face, and the world's a small, small place
'Cos when you're running on your own
You know you ain't like a rolling stone
Because a stone will find it's place
And when you hear this space
Just crawl and never run
And when you're work is done
Then you'll see the sun
So sing what you want I'm a man on a mission
No time to love, no time to be wasting
I wanna know if you feel above him
All the things you do that just make yourself feel undone, feel
undone
Blues, I heard you caught the blues
And what was it they said
Have you got out of bed, have you got out of that?
I know a headspace that you don't
I will - you cannot and you don't
A fortune has been made on all the illness they made
And then we've got to pay for the drugs to take it away
And then you're going to find there's nothing in your mind
That you don't already know, that you ain't already seen
Do you live in a dream?
Sing your song, and don't you cause trouble
Man on a mission there's a man in a bubble but
I wanna know if you feel above him
All the things you do that just make yourself feel undone, feel
undone
Sing your song, and don't you cause trouble
Man on a mission there's a man in a bubble and
Play your cards, throw your dice
You get a piece of land and a piece of advice
No time to be wasting there's no time to be wasted
No time to be wasting there's no time to get wasted
No time to be wasting always time to get wasted
No time to be wasting there's no time to get wasted
There's always time to get wasted (There's no time to waste)
There's always time to get wasted (There's no time to waste)
There's always time to get wasted (There's no time to waste)
There's always time to get wasted (There's no time to waste)
There's always time to get wasted (No time to waste)
There's always time to get wasted (No time to waste)
They've got me wasting time (No time to waste)
Got me wasting time (No time to waste)
They got me wasting time (No time to waste)
Got me wasting time (No time to waste)
RUNNING AWAY
Don't drink me I'm like turpentine
Make you blind, burn your insides
If I don't know me then I don't know you
Can't figure out what I'm supposed to do
I ain't running away from my mind this time
I ain't running away from my mind this time
There's a killer in me and a killer in you
A little talent but a lot would do
If I don't know me then I don't know you
I don't know why I do the things I do
I ain't running away from my mind this time
I ain't running away from my mind this time
I ain't running away from my mind this time
I ain't running away from my mind this time
Too stressed to eat, too tired to sleep
Alien to all you meet
It's the season of the witch, it's the season of the spin
And nobody knows what state we're in
It's the season of the witch, it's the season of the spin
And nobody knows the trouble we're in
It's the season of the witch, it's the season of the spin
LORD, I'VE BEEN TRYING
Lord, I've been trying
Trying to keep myself from crying
And it gets hard, there's no use denying
There's been some nights when I did a little lying
Sure feels like I've been here before
Yes it sure feels like I've been here before
Captain tell me where I've been,
Are there waves left there for me?
Is there something left to see?
Is there something left to be?
Oh I know that I'm holding on but I've got time to grow
Alright, alright, alright
Said it's alright, now
Days that I've been spending
And all these blues - they're never ending
And it gets hard, and life will go on again
Gonna shake off these blues, I'm leaving them now
Sure feels like I've been here before
Yes it sure feels like I've been here before
Captain tell me where I've been,
Are there waves left there for me?
Can you see the warning sign
Flashing there in my mind?
My mind is free and I'm talking up to you - I say
"Alright, alright, alright"
(I've been trying)
It feels good, it feels good, it feels good, it feels good, it feels good
(To keep my soul from crying)
My love is alright now,
(I've been trying)
Yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright, it's alright, it feels right
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright, it's alright, it
feels right
NATURE IS THE LAW
Old river and your
Restless wonder and your
Graceful leisure rolling to the sea
How many men have stood like I am
Gazing out and wishing for someone
Some are living and
Some are dead and
Some are hiding, waiting for the sun
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
The old river with your
Restless swagger and your
Graceful wonder flowing to the sea
I am begging you to hold me and throw me in and
Tell me when I will find my peace
Some are dead endings
Some are living and then
Some are waiting for the sun
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
Restless wonder roll into the sea
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
Restless wonder flow into the sea
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
Restless wonder roll into the sea
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
Restless wonder roll into the sea
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
Restless wonder flow into the sea
(Some are dead)
Nature is the law, baby
(Some are buried)
Nature is the law, now baby now
(Some are waiting)
Restless wonder roll into the sea
Nature is the law, baby
Nature is the law, now baby now
Restless wonder roll into the sea
