Inquisition Symphony is the second studio album by the Finnish metal band Apocalyptica. The album branches from their previous effort, containing only four Metallica covers. The remainder of the compositions are by Faith No More, Pantera, and Sepultura, as well as three originals by Apocalyptica bandleader Eicca Toppinen. Max Lilja did the arrangements for "One".



Cello-playing Finnish quartet Apocalyptica's sequel to their well-received first album departs from the safe haven of Metallica covers (only four tracks) and introduces material by other heavy metal bands, and even a few originals. Of the latter, "Harmageddon" is probably the standout track, and while most Metalli-fans will be eager to hear the group's rendition of the smash hit "One," the song takes a backseat to inspired renditions of earlier classics such as "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Fade to Black." As for the other bands covered, the arrangements of Pantera's "Domination" and Sepultura's "Refuse/Resist" are rather dull, but Faith No More's "From Out of Nowhere" works surprisingly well, and the group's performance of the album's incredibly complex title track (another Sepultura original) is simply stunning.

Im Jahre 1993 wurde die Metal Welt auf das vielversprechende Projekt "Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos" aufmerksam. Die durchweg positiven Reaktionen schweißten Apocalyptica enger zusammen und ließ aus dem finnischen Quartett Eicca Toppinen, Antero Manninen, Paavo Lötjönen und Max Lilja eine Band werden, die im Februar 1998 endlich den langerwarteten Nachfolger Ihres Debüts aufnahm. Mit Inquisition Symphony gelang Apocalyptica eine sprunghafte Weiterentwicklung, die von den ersten Eigenkompositionen "Harmageddon", "Toreador" und "M.B." eindrucksvoll verdeutlicht wird. Auch die Coverversionen glänzen auf Inquisition Symphony nicht nur mit der originellen Instrumentierung sondern ebenfalls durch eine individuelle und hervorragende Umsetzung. Insbesondere das Faith No More Cover "From Out Of Nowhere" weiß neben Interpretationen zu Metallicas "Nothing Else Matters", "Fade To Black" und "One" zu begeistern. Auch "For Whom The Bell Tolls" ist mehr als nur eine Erwähnung wert. Bei dem gebotenen musikalischen Niveau genannter Stücke sieht man gerne über die (kleineren) Schwachstellen von "Refuse/Resist" (Sepultura) und "Domination" (Pantera) hinweg. Die euphorischen Reaktionen der Finnländer waren also nicht aus der Luft gegriffen und der dortige Charteinstieg auf Platz fünf ist mehr als gerechtfertigt. Fazit: Kaufen, und zwar sofort!
