A listen to Apocalyptica's Apocalyptica brings with it the nagging urge to figure out where, exactly, the music fits. Certain moments - ntire tracks, even - are given over to classical formality, and it is in those moments, steeped as they are in traditional loveliness, that a listener can come dangerously close to thinking he is hearing something lofty and important. He is not. Apocalyptica, the genre-splicing Finnish instrumental band that changed headbangers' perception of the cello, is not pretentious exactly, but its effect is the same as that of a rock band whose lead singer is audibly British: it sounds smart. Too smart, for instance, to issue from the headphones of a kid just discovering Black Sabbath or lining up for Slipknot tickets. Where Apocalyptica might fit, then, is not with heavy rock scenesters but with aging metal heads. It is not hard to envision tracks like "Fatal Error" and "Fisheye" booming from the speakers of a splashy convertible with a bald guy at the wheel. Elaborate fantasy-concocting gamers - Dungeons & Dragons players and their descendants - also stand a better chance than most of finding relatable rock bliss here.

Kaum haben wir uns an das Schlagzeug gewöhnt, machen Apocalyptica den nächsten Schritt: es darf gesungen werden, und nicht nur auf den Singles oder der hintergeworfenen Sonderedition. Direkt im ersten Song rocken sie uns mit "Life Burns!" einen Song mit Lauri Ylönen von The Rasmus auf die Ohren. Und der ist auf dem deutlich härteren Album Apocalyptica noch die Tanznummer. Mit Songs wie "Fisheye", ""Fatal Error" oder "Betrayal/Forgiveness" können sich selbst gestandene Headbanger einen Nackenkrampf abholen, einige Stellen bei letzterem Song gehen schon gut in Richtung Death-Metal. Und ja, auch die Single "Bittersweet" ist drauf, sowie in der Fan-Edition noch "En Vie/How Far/Wie Weit", ein treibendes Rockstück mit Martha von Die Happy am Gesang in drei Sprachen. Die Cello-Sounds wurden teilweise so stark verfremdet und verzerrt, dass man das Ursprungs-Instrument kaum erkennt, aber wenn dann Balladen wie das sehr finnisch-traurige "Farewell", das Breitwandgejammer "Ruska" oder das Vampirfilmsoundtrack-anmutende "Deathzone" erklingen, dann ist die Cello-Welt wieder völlig in Ordnung. Insgesamt ist Apocalyptica eher mit Cult als mit Reflections zu vergleichen, und das ist gut so. Denn wer einen solchen Bandnamen führt, sollte ab und zu mal die Welt in Trümmer in legen, und das haben die Streichorgienmeister mal wieder ganz himmlisch hingekriegt.
